iPhone 11 Pro getting HOT
Just received my iPhone 11 Pro and after a few minutes of light use, the back and sides heat up to where I can barely hold the phone. Any ideas?

Yes I’ve experienced the same. The phone gets really hot in the back and sides. Also - the wireless charging is really slow. An entire night of wireless charging (6+hours) took my battery from 46% to 73%. That is not good at all. Did anyone else experience the same issue ?
First, if nothing else, Apple has a 14 day return policy if you are unhappy with your phone for any reason.
Among other things, your iPhone 8 had a slower CPU and had a completely different design (LCD vs. OLED screen, home button, different case materials, etc.)
Have you looked at Settings -> Battery to see if there are any runaway apps causing your device to use more processor power than usual, causing it to warm up?
Historically the Facebook and Instagram apps have been two of the largest battery users.
What are you doing when this happens? I have an 11 Pro Max myself and I can guarantee you that in normal usage it doesn't get "hot" within a few minutes; if I am editing video, of course it does, you're editing 4K video and most desktop computers can't handle that workload.
These aren't just phones anymore, they have more power than a laptop did just a few years ago and iPhones don't have fans.
I looked up battery usage it’s one of the first things I did. I had one app using 20% battery and that was the highest one. I uninstalled that app, no change. Mind you, my phone does not get warm, it gets hot very quickly.
I don’t have the Facebook App btw. With all apps closed all I have to do is iMessage or browse the web for a couple minutes and my phone starts getting hot. I set up my mom’s Bluetooth in her car and her email account on her new 11 pro max today and hers started heating up too, just like mine. My sister got the 11 pro max as well and says hers never even gets warm.
I have this problem with my iPhone 11 after wireless charging. It only started happening after updating to 13.1. It worked fine while charging since I received the phone on the 20th, but started the issue after the 13.1 update. I noticed that there was an update to the "optimized battery charging" feature in 13.1. To test, I disabled the feature last night, and the phone did not get hot as it did previously. I'm going to re-test again, with it enabled to see if it makes a difference. I've spoken with Apple Support and opened a case ****. If anyone else is having a similar/related heat issue, it may help to refer to this case if you speak with them.

Me too. All I’ve done is set up the iPhone 11 Pro and that’s it I haven’t even used it and it’s heated up so much. The back and sides are extremely hot then all of a sudden it’s switched off with a black screen and the timer thing going round and round and round. Can’t even force it to shut down or anything and it’s getting hotter. Not impressed at all. Hope it doesn’t catch fire !!
”Go to setting > general > reset > reset all settings.” worked for the overheating on my iPhone 11 Pro! I got it today and was wondering the whole day is it would persist. Thanks for the solution. My battery went low today pretty quickly as well but could have been from the data migration and downloading apps. Hopefully will be fine.
If it's warm like that and the battery isn't lasting long, sounds like it's working hard. Were you restoring a backup or anything? Might not be anything to worry about unless it's shutting itself off like someone else mentioned, but if it doesn't change after a few days might be worth going to the Genius Bar and/or exchanging it after finding out if it's wonky software or not.
Omg thank you! I did “reset all settings” and I think it worked! I did it a couple hours ago and my phone has not gotten hot since and I’ve been using it this whole time to test it. Before it would get hot in just a couple minutes. Interesting thing is Verizon had me do a factory reset, (erase all content and settings) which didn’t work. Hopefully my phone stays this way!
My iPhonePro Max is also getting v v v hot, simply using email and wechat.
When I make a call it gets very hot as well.
If I leave it on the side for 20 or 30 minutes it just continues with this heat issue...
Im not sure what to do here.. its been a while since I had an iPhone and Im not sure its meant to be a mini heater. Its no longer summer weather but I worry this phone could overheat in hot temperatures.
Should I take it back? It only has 4 apps on it and none of them are unusual (gmail/ telegram/ wechat/ whatsapp). I didnt even migrate from an older phone.
Hmmmmmm....
Check Settings -> Battery and look for any apps that are using a lot of power.
Since wechat is an audio/video chat service, and there are few apps that would use more power than that, I suspect it may well be the culprit.
Hi! Thank you for getting back to me on that :)
I just checked it out in battery- its using 85% of the battery.
Does this mean I cant use it?
I live in China so if iPhone can't use this application, I'd have to move away or get a phone that can..!
Thanks,
You can, but you should also contact them and see if they are working on a fix; a properly functioning app should not be using that much battery, and that’s why your phone is getting hot.
It shouldn’t matter if an app is using a lot of power or not. You should be able to use your phone and the apps in it without it getting so hot that it cant be held. You really are not helping anyone with all your post. There is obviously an issue that Apple needs to address and issue a fix.
i got a new iPhone 11 pro and it got so hot i could hardly touch it, Vodafone told me to return the phone to my nearest shop, they gave me another new one and this one did exactly the same, it got very hot and i hadn't even set it up or put it on charge this was straight out the box. i took this one back to the store and told them i didn't want another one. i have NEVER had a phone get hot like this before and i have used iPhones for years now.
This sounds like it was due to a runaway process, like the WeChat app mentioned above.
Ultimately, you did what was right for you and you returned the phone.
It's up to the third party vendors to fix their runaway apps.
