iPhone 11 Pro getting HOT

Just received my iPhone 11 Pro and after a few minutes of light use, the back and sides heat up to where I can barely hold the phone. Any ideas?

My wife got hers yesterday and we were quite amazed at the amount of heat put off by this phone while transferring data and settings from her iPhone 8 Plus. I thought it would get better after the setup, but even normal use and charging, it still gets pretty warm. I hope this isn't a sign of problems to come. I can't think that this heat issue would be good for battery life.

Good practical post.

1) also make sure all apps are latest update.

2) if power hog app (that shouldn’t be so bad in past experience) is wanted, consider delete and try reinstall it.

3) for many people in today’s fast cell internet, background app refresh is not required for most or all apps. I turn this off on all apps, then later turn on only those I find need it, if any. Helps battery life and reduces heat.

Only other thing on Apple battery usage support page not mentioned is turning on auto dimming of screen. I’ve had that off by accident couple times w screen light at 100%, and it can be battery hog and heat up the phone also.

Another possible factor for some is the work a new phone is doing downloading synced app data and photos from iCloud and reindexing it. For those with very large amount of data, this has been reported elsewhere to go on for a week.

So I went to the Genius Bar today aka the Apple Store. Didn’t know It was called the Genius Bar before this since I never had an occasion to go. The guy did all kinds of tests on my phone and said he was not getting any alerts. He told me that he was going to restore my phone to factory settings and I told him I had already done that through Verizon. Then he told me that the “Erase all content and settings” was not a factory reset. I never knew that, I thought it was. So he restored my phone back to factory through iTunes and told me not to restore iCloud backup til tomorrow to test it out so that’s how I left my phone, without anything on it. No apps, no contacts, nothing.

When I brought it home I web browsed on safari and within minutes my phone was heating up more than before I brought it in. What he did made it worse. It wasn’t hot but getting there. I played with it for a while and it wasn’t getting better so I did another “reset all settings“ and it was still getting too warm so I did a “Erase all settings and content” then another “reset all settings” and it’s better again.

I’m done trying to fix my phone. I’m waiting for my replacement from Verizon and turning this one back over.

Well... my iPhone 11 arrived today! It was working great for about 3 hours... but then I got a message stating that the phone was too hot and needed to cool down (*insert explicative of choice*). I waited about 5 min, but when I realized the message wasn't going to go away, I decided to just turn the phone off. Ironically, the phone never felt hot. After a generous 10 minutes, I turned the phone back on. As soon as the apple logo disappeared, I was greeted with a new message... a message stating that the battery was not recognized as a genuine apple battery and that apple had been notified.

Say what?!

I turned the phone off again, and then on, only to be greeted by the same message over and over again. The phone actually now cycles off/on all by itself about every 5 minutes. I tried plugging it in (using the usb-c supplied apple charger) and the phone is no longer indicating that it is charging. In fact, the battery symbol, which used to read about 76%, was now showing a red "low battery" status. I jumped on Apple chat, but Desiree (at least she was nice) couldn't help remedy the issue. Nonetheless, this guy is now waiting for a Genius Bar visit tomorrow afternoon. While I usually don't mind hanging out at the apple store, I'm just not thrilled about the hassle that will surely ensue. Hopefully they have a new phone in stock and will make my life easy with a simple swap out (fingers crossed!).

By the way, I am running 13.1.2. and I can't get my phone to connect to iTunes (let alone stay on long enough) in order to do a factory reset.

I’ve had the phone for over a week and I’m very unhappy with it. I have only chrome open and I’m surfing the web and my phone is hot like I’m editing 4K video. My battery life has been terrible as well, which is expected when your phone is running hot.

Good thing I got apple care because I’m not going to be able to deal with this for 2 years. My hand is uncomfortable and sweating just holding it. For an $1100 “pro” product, this is totally unacceptable!

To provide an update, I went to the apple store this morning. They had not seen my specific issue prior to today, but ironically, there was another person there at the exact same time with the same complications. To recap, working fine... then a message stating the phone is overheating (despite not being externally hot to the touch)... then the battery not being recognized as a genuine apple product and no longer able to charge or connect to a computer. At the apple store, they tried several methods to reset the phones, but were unsuccessful with both phones. They ended up replacing the phones. Hopefully this helps someone else.

I ended up going to the Apple Store and returning my iPhone 11 because I didn’t want to deal with this issue anymore—I downgraded to iPhone 8 plus (my original phone that I lost). However, after I got home, I realized that my iPhone 8 also had the same problem with my teaching app. I believe the problem was incompatibility with the 13.1.2 update to iOS, especially since there were about 3 updates in one week, which was not enough time for the software developers of other apps to catch up with updates (including my teaching app that I depend on). I had to go through yet another hard reset. I lost a lot of date in the process (since I couldn’t use my most recently saved backups, which were already made with the new iOS), but no problems with the apps or overheating after that . This is just too many iOS updates in a row, Apple! Anyway, it was a huge amount of trouble to go through in a week, not to mention spending hours on the phone with Apple Care customer support every single day. It was really a nightmare. I believe a lot of the issues people think are hardware problems with iPhone 11 are actually software problems with the new iOS. Apple needs to give apps a chance to catch up before putting out so many updates in a row!!!

I thought it might be buggy software too but my sister has an 11 pro max 256 gigs just like mine and she texted me last night saying she was on social media an hour last night and her phone wasn’t even warm. Mine gets warm in less than two minutes. My 8 plus never got warm and I did crazy things with it.

And when the Apple guy set my phone back to factory I brought it home without restoring my iCloud backup so I didn’t have anything loaded on the phone. I didn’t even set it up and it was getting hot in just minutes with just the factory apps on it. From that I’m guessing it isn’t a third party app.

My replacement phone has just shipped from Verizon so I’ll let everyone know what happens with that one when I get it in a couple days.

I can use Facebook for hours without my iPhone 11 Pro Max becoming even slightly warm.

Have you checked Settings -> Battery to see if anything is using a lot of battery on your device?

Note also WiFi is less power intensive than cellular, especially if your cell connection is three bars or lower, as the transmit power on the cellular radio needs to be increased to compensate, and that generates heat as well.

Yup. Can't stand when I have to go through hoops because of issues caused by an iOS update when it was working fine just before the update. Or a new phone not working as it should. If you just bought it, go back to Apple and have them replace it. Then restore do a restore from iTunes. Hopefully you didn't backup with the new issues, and you still have the old backup. Good luck. Let us know what happens. I was gung-ho about upgrading from the X to the 11 Pro. But after reading these posts, I think I may just hold off.

I called Apple. After speaking with 4 tech people we finally did a full restore on the iphone using itunes on computer. I then started from scratch on the iphone and downloaded a backup from the cloud. That worked. Now the phone is loading the apps without getting hot. Mine was BRAND NEW iphone (iphone 11 pro max) was SOOO hot I could not hold it. Absurd and a tons of time to fix, but fixed. The RESTORE was very specific. Have phone plugged into computer and hit vol up, then vol down, then hold right hand button until picture of a cord comes on. Then tell computer in itunes to restore (popped up on screen) then update and restore. Then set up phone from scrach and at ground zero. It took 4 apple techs before finding the one who guided me correctly. Although he said I had download all apps from scratch and that was wrong! I did download from cloud. Call Apple. Ask for a SENIOR tech person.
