Just received my iPhone 11 Pro and after a few minutes of light use, the back and sides heat up to where I can barely hold the phone. Any ideas?

I have read through all posts and want to offer my 2 cents
My iphone 11 pro was normal until I started using the keynote app. It heated up real fast to a point that it is uncomfortably hot (within 1 min). Whenever I switch to other apps, the phone starts to cool. If I switch keynote on, phone starts cooking again. That’s obviously very weird, then I found this thread.
So following the discussion, I made sure my iOS is up to date on 13.1.1. Then I checked my “battery” tab in the settings, 10 min of using keynote consumed 15% battery, while the whole day of using other apps only make up 85%. Keynote is essential to me in my job, so deleting it is not an option. I also didn’t want to “reset all settings”. Instead, I closed settings>general>background app refresh. That totally fixed the problem

I did the same had mine replaced 10 days ago and by far the second one is smooth and hasn't been running hot.

The phone should shut itself off before it became hot enough to cause an actual burn.

It is a problem. The 11 claims to have 1 hour better battery than the XR, and for some reason this isn’t the case. Also a phone overheating like this isn’t normal or acceptable and seems to have something to do with the battery problem. Apple needs to know this so it can be fixed because we are spending money on these products!
I think it’s Spotify. I was listening to Spotify on my way to university today with the aux cord plugged into the adapter into the bottom of my 11 pro and my phone got really hot and the battery drained from 100%-76% in about 20 minutes. Spotify was the only app running, I closed all others.
I thought it might be buggy software too but my sister has an 11 pro max 256 gigs just like mine and she texted me last night saying she was on social media an hour last night and her phone wasn’t even warm. Mine gets warm in less than two minutes. My 8 plus never got warm and I did crazy things with it.
And when the Apple guy set my phone back to factory I brought it home without restoring my iCloud backup so I didn’t have anything loaded on the phone. I didn’t even set it up and it was getting hot in just minutes with just the factory apps on it. From that I’m guessing it isn’t a third party app.
My replacement phone has just shipped from Verizon so I’ll let everyone know what happens with that one when I get it in a couple days.
The problem is not with the Phone it is with the lighting charger which heats the phone. I used lightning charger to heat my wife’s iPhone 8 Plus and after few minutes the phone got heated. I used to charge my iPhone 11 Pro with other charger and my phone was fine. Surely the issue is with the lightning charger.
The only way I could solve this heat problem was to buy a solid Otter Defender Case for my iPhone 11 Pro. All the controls and camera work perfectly with it on, and I rarely feel any hint of heat. It is not dainty and elegant , but it keeps me from feeling the heat . The couple of times I dropped my cellphone on concrete and marble floors, my phone was marvelously protected. It is just a shame that Otter does not make the Defender case in a dainty color and style instead of a military style.
I means your phone is suffering from the same bug as many many many many other iPhones which causes you cpu to run at 100% most of the time which can drain a full battery in under 45 minutes.
If its just happened then you probably have just updated it to the latest os version but if you are one of the very few lucky ones it might settle down after about 4 days.
Ttoday is 7/420-I received my phone 7/2-noticed right away While I was setting it up and transferring data that it gets abnormally hot. Will contact Apple; this is not normal. I don't even have it in a case yet, haven’t even streamed music or video, what happens then? I paid waaaaay too much for this phone to be having issues right out of the box...

Instagram (and Facebook) are well known battery hogs. Do an Internet search if you don't want to believe me.
Likewise, Safari and Messages will use a lot of battery when in active use, that's what happens when you are using the Internet and likely watching video.
