iPhone 11 Pro getting HOT

Just received my iPhone 11 Pro and after a few minutes of light use, the back and sides heat up to where I can barely hold the phone. Any ideas?

Yes I’ve experienced the same. The phone gets really hot in the back and sides. Also - the wireless charging is really slow. An entire night of wireless charging (6+hours) took my battery from 46% to 73%. That is not good at all. Did anyone else experience the same issue ?

I just picked up my iPhone 11 Pro and after restoring from iCloud it is seriously warm.. what is up? What is the definitive answer from Apple on this?

Restoring from iCloud is almost constant CPU and WiFi usage, which means a lot of internal heat builds up.

Then, after the restore completes, all the Spotlight indices must be rebuilt, which will also generate heat.

Check it again after 24-48 hours and see if it's still warm; what you describe is pretty normal.

Still happens. Still warm just running normally meaning, power is on. Repeating what others have said, I have been an iPhone user since they first came out, this never happened before. If this is the new 'normal' due to all of the new functionality, it should have been in the marketing and sales material. Went back to the store yesterday where I picked it up, all of the sales people are playing ignorant. I pointed them to this forum. Been in software/hw for 40 years.. seriously have never seen so many people dance around a situation like this before. I won't call it a 'problem' however it is unnerving to observe so many denials and/or blatant - "this is normal" when no other prior iPhones had this issue. Will be interesting to see what Apple says.. I'll be contacting friends who work there to see if we can get an answer from the top of the house.

There is nothing we can do . My iPhone 11 Pro has been doing this since the day I got it As a Christmas gift from my son John.

Apple does not seem to be able to do , or want to do , anything about it at the present time. The lack of parts situation in China due to the current a Corona Virus outbreak surely must affect them currently, making the problem worse.

I temporarily “solved” some of my problem by getting the toughest military grade Otter case I could get .

Apple sells cute Otter cases in their store , but they did not carry this military grade model that protects from heat as well as drops and shocks. After I put on the case I bought directly from Otter , I can put the phone in my pocket or purse for a long time without concern or fear of the extreme heat and it’s possible consequences .

I backup and charge my phone every night , and sometimes it gets warm, but the case controls the heat nicely. Yes, my iPhone 11Pro still heats up , but with the Otter case on I do not feel it as badly (except when I remove the .Otter case .

I use my iPhone for everything . I use photos a lot and do Adobe scans , do correspondence , and do Facebook and much more .

PS

My iPhone 8 did not heat up like this. But

my iPhone 5S hsd a battery that swelled so much that my Otter Case popped open and Apple replaced that phone with a new one ( one with a supposedly different model battery). I gave the new phone to my son Edward . I made sure to put the new phone in a heavy duty Otter Case similar to the one I have now. He had no problems.

My other past iPhones had no heat problems.

I have the same with my iPhone 11 pro, it heats up to extent not acceptable also some time when I get calls I can not hear back the voice, also I tried to use headphone but does not work, the only way is to use the phone on speakers mode, to get the phone work normally again I need to restart it one to two times, My phone is two days old, when I told my communication company they told me they need to fix it and not to replace it, this is the first time I face problem with Apple products

Yes, for the first day after restoring a new phone or after installing new iOS releases, the phone may work harder than usual and as a result may feel hotter than usual (and use more battery) as it needs to rebuild all its internal Spotlight indices.

Once 48 hours have passed, if it is still an issue check under Battery to see whether a particular app is using a lot of power; if it is, contact that app’s developer.

I got my iPhone 11 Pro in November 2019 and had issues with it from the very beginning. First, I live 2 hours from the nearest Apple store and so I can’t just run up there any time I have an issue, I am really good about doing what I can at home, last resort is calling Apple support because they aren’t helpful at all by telling me to go 2 hours to a store. So I go to the store, it doesn’t overheat in the store so that was a wasted trip. The next week, same issue. This time I call, not very happy but still was patient and went through all the possibilities and the tech talked to me like I was lying about my phone over heating. I don’t have time for that, but I still was patient. Nothing was resolved but the overheating went away on its own like it had the first time. It’s continuously getting super hot and no, not while charging (been asked that a million times) yet Apple refuses to do anything to fix this problem let alone take into consideration that not only do I not have time to keep driving 4 hour round trips to get my phone looked at, but that costs money and I’m so frustrated with how quick they are to say well just mail it then OR the most inconvenient “offer” to put a charge on a credit card for the amount of a brand new iPhone 11 Pro, they will send a replacement and the charge will be pending on the account til they either fix the phone or let you keep the replacement. It is very upsetting and I’ve had apple products for 10 years now and never been disappointed with customer service nor have I ever had so many issues with an iPhone until this past year. This overheating issue needs to be addressed and fixed before someone gets hurt. It gets that hot!

i had that extreme overheating problem for several month after I got my new iPhone 11Pro.

I purchased an Otter Defender case ASAP to protect me from the extreme heat of my iPhone 11Pro ( as well as to quell my fears that the heat would cause the battery to swell like it did on my iPhone 5S, and quite possibly catch fire or explode). The Otter Defender case is like armor, so it keeps the heat at a level I can tolerate. Plus it keeps me safe.

Then, I started to re-boot every night. Of course that requires re-entering some passwords every time , which can be quite annoying, but that seemed to lessen the heat a bit more . Since I did those things , although I can feel some heat at times, my phone rarely overheats to the point where it could be dangerous. To say this is a reasonable fix, it is not , but it keeps me safe and keeps my phone intact.

Once again, if it is getting hot, check under Battery to see which apps it shows are using an excessive amount of battery and notify those apps' vendors if any are shown.

Note also that your phone may get warm and use slightly more battery for the first 24 hours after a new iOS release is installed as the phone needs to reindex everything so search can find things.

If the phone came in new and you are restoring from a previous icloud backup the phone can get pretty hot during a restore specially if at the same time is charging. Second thing to pay attention to is the case you are using, some of the rugged cases can raise the temperature as they do not allow for correct heat dissipation. Finally process intensive tasks such as playing games or watching HD videos, trascoding videos etc raise the temperature of the cpu and gpu.

If the temperatures are constantly high then I would advise a factory restore and if things do not rectify a visit to your local apple dealer is advisable.

It isn’t getting hot because we are restoring from iCloud. I am very familiar with that process and know what a phone feels like when it’s getting warm because it’s working too hard. The new iPhone 11’s get HOT within a few seconds. Not warm, hot kinda hot. They get HOT. I’m pretty sure that’s bad for the battery. It got hottest by the camera lens in the back so I’m guessing that’s where the battery is. Maybe it’s a faulty battery but as hot as my phone got It didn’t feel safe.
