my new MacBook Pro shuts down at 40% battery

I just got my 2019 MacBook Pro 13'' two days ago. I didn't charge the laptop because I was at work and I wasn't home, so last night when I opened it, browsed the web for a few minutes and when the battery status reached 40% it shut down instantly and I couldn't power the MacBook up unless I plugged it in.

A procedure we have been suggesting here for a while is:

• Connect your charger and allow your MacBook Pro to charge overnight. (Your premium-Quality MacBook Pro has built-in protections so that it will NEVER over-charge, even if left on the charger for an extended period.)

• Do an SMC reset, being careful to follow the complex instructions religiously. Your recent MacBook Pro DOES have a T2 chip and therefore requires one of those specific procedures. (There is no damage done by an SMC reset, and you can do it as many times as you like and as often as you like with no penalty.)

If no joy after trying the reset a few times, we have been assured that Apple telephone support is ready to provide additional guidance.

Typically a SMC is the go to way to reset the battery management— Apple has not been very revealing what the issue is with these new Macs.

Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Use it for a while and see if it straightens out.

If the issue continues after the SMC reset I would not hesitate to take it in, if it is convenient.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment
