UPDATE: Seems going to Settings > Music and turning off “Show Apple Music” has resolved the problem. This removes the Browse and For You tabs in the music app. It is a temporary fix but one that allows the continuous streaming of my playlists. Hopefully, a permanent solution is on its way.

This is strictly an iOS 13 issue. I am running 12.4 on my iPad and all audio works fine.
Chrome - Firefox - even Safari an audio stops when the device goes black / locks. Apple was kind enough to only allow your phone to remain unlocked up to 5 minutes as they removed the “never” unlock feature.
What is most frustrating is Apple knows the problem yet all their customer support people are instructed to reply with boiler plate non responses “did you restart your phone? Is it just one website or every website, are your issues the same as the thousands of people writing about the same issue”.
I can only listen to audio up to 5 minutes. This is beyond aggravating & frustrating.
Whatever code was in 12.4, Apple, please go back to that regarding audio playback.
Hi pughj17,
Thank you for posting! I understand you're finding that your music and podcasts stop when you open the Messages app.
Does this happen when you open any other apps, or just Messages?
Does it happen when you're playing music through headphones, the speakers, or both?
If you Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and try it out again, does that help?
I hope this helps get you started. Take care.
Music stops while browsing through safari, anytime a page has embedded audio, even if the audio is not started/ selected. Very annoying to keep switching back and forth to restart music whether it be Apple Music, Spotify or pandora. This is on “iPad os” on an iPad Pro 2018. Obviously this doesn’t happen on a laptop.
Same happens to me after installing iOS 13.1. I use Radio Box as a player via Bluetooth to a Bose Wave Radio. As soon as Radio Box doesn’t have focus (e.g., I try to open any other app) the music stops. Thereafter, if I swipe down to try to restart playback, the app immediately switches back to “stopped” before any sound is heard. Correct me if I’m wrong but iOS 13.0 just came out last week and it’s already at iOS 13.1.2! Great job, Apple.
After trying all sorts of different things and on the brink of “downgrading” back to iOS 12.4, I downloaded the Dolphin browser and was able to play media from website using that browser without it stopping when the phone locked. However that browser crashes on me from time to time if I use it for searching, etc. so I only use it to play online podcasts. I keep looking for new iOS updates hoping Apple will fix this glitch. Or at least let us set the “never” option on the phone lock setting....
I found that Safari works (shocker). The sites I use for audio worked fine in Safari. Chrome and Firefox have had no improvements.
This iOS update is on par with Vista. Apple went and changed everything people were enjoying about their OS. I cannot find one upgrade that has enhanced my experience.
Same problem. This started on iOS 13 update and is still here in 13.1.2. Now any streaming cuts off when screen locks. Turning screen lock to "Never" prevents the interruption of the stream. [edit] this is in chrome for iOS. Haven't tried other browsers.
Go to settings > messages> turn off “raise to listen” under audio messages. It seems to have fixed the issue for me 🙏. (It probably turns off any podcast/music because it assumes you want to listen to the messages instead)

If it's a podcast and you can find it in the podcast app, set the sleep timer (by swiping up) and set it to play until the podcast is complete and that works! At least it just worked for me...and I was having the same problem as you.
This didn't seem to help for me using Chrome. It seems related to screen-lock. If I set to 30 seconds. Bam. 30 seconds later it cuts out when the screen locks. Haven't tried Safari but others report streaming fine from that.
I updated to Ios 13.1.2. At first it doesn't help, my phone still pausing while phone is black/locked. Then, I tried to restart my phone (ip8) now it works. I'm able to listen to my audio book when phone is locked. I will update more if I face the issue again.
Has anyone solved this problem? I am running iPhone 11Pro and iOS 13.1.2 and audio playing from Chrome stops after a short time.
This is an awful experience from Apple, I hope you will release a fix soon!!
Only thing that has worked for me is the Dolphin browser. That seems to stay on playing media from Web even when screen locks. I check daily for iOS 13.1.3 or better, 13.2 in hopes of a real fix. But, alas, no luck...
