iPhone 11 Pro Max 4G LTE Signal Issue

The new iPhone 11 Pro Max loses 4G signal from time to time (every a few minutes) when the Wi-Fi is off or no valid Wi-Fi hot spot is nearby.

Wi-Fi is off: The 4G signal drops to null in a sudden, and restores to full (4 bars) in 2-3 seconds. This happens regularly.

Wi-Fi is connected: The bars are steady - stay at 4 all the time.

I have tried:

  1. Disable Auto Network Selection
  2. Reset Network Settings
  3. Reset All Settings
  4. Reset All Content and Settings

None of them shows promising improvement.

I just got back from Apple Store and they swapped out my phone for a new one and the problem was fixed!!!

I would suggest doing these steps first before you go to Apple Store:

1) Call your cell company to debug first. Apple is going to say since it’s cell service issue and it’s not Apple problem. Cell company is going to go through list of debugging issues (reset network settings, etc) to see if that fixes your issues. If that doesn’t fix, continue debugging steps below.

2) Do a screen record of your phone dropping the cellular connection as evidence of you having issues just in case you’re in the Apple store and you can’t reproduce the issue.

3) Backup your phone. I used my laptop to backup because it restores much faster that way than going through WiFi.

4) Do a full wipe of your phone and set up your phone as a new phone (don’t restore from backup). This way you can see if your cellular issues are from software or from hardware.

4) Test our your phone and see if you are experiencing same issues.

5) If your cell connection is still dropping, take it into the Apple Store.

Good luck! I feel this is for sure a hardware issue for most people!

I returned my Pro Max and got the Iphone 11. Just like last year, I had the XS Max and same thing with Verizon. I went to Tmobile and got the XR. Verizon has had issues despite the phone issue, but when you add the two, it's horrible. It seems that these Max phones have issues with their LTE reception, and until they get it right, I'm steering clear of them. It's a crapshoot because many have issues and then 1 our of 1000 do not. I'm not taking that gamble. I already buy lottery tickets. I'm happy with the 11 for now. Hope you figure out what's best for you. Apple keeps things hush at times!

Yes. After an hour on the phone with T-mobile and even them conferencing in Apple(no help - “you can send it in for repair or replacement”) T-mobile is going to swap it out with a new one (hopefully from a different lot that is not defective) but there won’t be any more in stock until the end of the month or early November. The difficulty arises in that the T-mobile buyers remorse window is only 14 days and replacements won’t be available until well after 14 days. T-mobile is making it work. Unfortunately I sent in my old iPhone 7 Plus for the upgrade credit right after I received this new phone. So there is still potential for this to get screwed up. Crossing my fingers. If the replacement phone does not work I am done with Apple smart phones. Will have to sell my Series 4 Apple Watch too which I really like.

I’ve had the exact same issue:

  • iPhone 11 Pro Max.
  • interestingly issue occurs in the exact same location, and other areas with big infrastructure (building/walls/etc). For the purpose of testing, my desk at work is exactly where the issue occurs every time.
  • Issue occurred with iOS 13.1 & 13.1.2
  • Booked a Genius Bar appointment, suspected iOS issue. That’s when 13.1.2 came out, issue still there after update
  • back to Apple, had phone replaced.
  • intentionally left it on iOS 13.0, tested at work, exact same issue

is it it iOS 13 generally speaking, or the iPhone 11 itself?

I think it’s software. There is many users reporting the same behavior with previous iPhone version as Xr, 8 or XS with iOs 13. Also as pmmalg said the issue seem very location based so it’s probably more software. If it’s a hardware issue it’s a problem with a particular mode of the modem so maybe a MIMO issue or a problem with a particular frequency.

Some users get the problem even with their replacement phone.

I’m having the same problems in Australia on Optus (e-sim) and Vodafone (physical sim). At first I was having phone calls when I could hear everything but the other person could hear nothing. Then I noticed the sudden drops on both sims from 4 bars to 1 or no bars, then back to 3 or 4 bars... it was very frustrating, and the worst thing was it was happening on both sims.

Then I started experiencing the 4 bars but no internet thing every 15 minutes or so, and was ready to throw the bloody thing at the wall (iPhone 11 Pro 256gb).

I took it in to show a “genius” and he just said it was the carrier’s fault... not the sort of amazing Apple customer service I’ve become accustomed to, but nevertheless, even though I had spoken to both carriers and been through their processes, I repeated some as per Apple’s request... reset network settings (didn’t help), backed up to Mac and iCloud, restored to factory settings, replaced voda sim, set up as new phone, setup Optus e-sim again, used the phone that way for a day (didn’t help), restored from iCloud, still having problems, so went back in a few days later, and demanded a new phone.

Sadly, the new phone has exactly the same problems! I’ve since done all the iOS updates (now on 13.1.3), but none of these have helped. I alternate my default data plan between Optus e-sim and Voda sim just in case that helps, but it doesn’t. They can’t both be having the exact same reception problems in the heart of Sydney, Australia, can they?

i’m guessing there’s a hardware issue that they are still trying to work out. I was starting to think maybe it was because I have two sims, or perhaps because I always have wifi calling turned on (Apple “Genius” suggested that?). Anyone else in the same boat, or are there lots of single sim users with problems?

I have the iPhone 11 Pro 512GB with Verizon Wireless and cellular drops several times a day. I show four bars/LTE each time but cannot use my phone unless I reset/reboot. I've called Verizon Wireless and they've performed a network reset and I've also visited a Verizon Wireless store and received a new SIM but still no luck. Staff at Verizon Wireless told me that this is a common issue with the iPhone 11 so I'm hoping that a fix is in the works. Going to an Apple store today for more info.

Went to the Apple Store and had them run a diagnostic and they told me that there are no hardware issues. Did a complete reset using a recent iCloud backup. Still the same cellular issue. Went back to the Verizon Wireless store later in the afternoon in hopes to get a replacement unit. Was told by one of the staff that they're also having an issue with their iPhone 11 (256GB) with cellular dropping. Got a new SIM -- second one so far -- but cellular dropped again today. Was told that perhaps this will be addressed when iOS 13.2 is pushed but based on recent comments, that's not the case. Will likely go back to the Apple Store and request a replacement unit.

iPhone 11 Pro Max 512 - Verizon

I've had it since day one of the launch and it's been great, until last week (October 24th).

I can have 4 bars and can't make a call. It just shows dialing, but no dial tone, then call failed.

Or I will have three bars and I can hear who I'm speaking with, but either they say I'm breaking up or they can't hear me at all and they hang up.

I call back and it won't go through again.

It goes from four bars to one to none in highly populated areas where I have never had an issue with any of my past four iPhones.

I went to the Genius Bar today and they ran diagnostics stating I had only 8 calls in my past 100, but they were all three days ago, Oct 25th! They 'reset software'. Next step factory reset the phone if necessary. Next step replace SIM cards if necessary and lastly they said they can replace the phone. And they did say they would replace the phone when I was at the Apple Store today, but they said that they will only do this once so I opted to try the software reset. I want to say it seems better, but I was still getting more drop-outs than I should. I will be checking it over the next two days as I will be traveling a few hundred miles in my car and will test it, but I am not optimistic based on my experience on my drive home today from the Apple store which is 18 miles.

I’m trying to figure out if I have a malfunctioning modem, or if it’s just the crappy Intel modem in these phones, as I had a similar issue with my XS Max last year. Basically I live in an area of my (fairly large) city with somewhat of a weak signal, but not terrible. I have t-mobile, and an android on T-Mobile gets 3-4 bars in my house, the nearest tower is about 1.5 miles away. My iPhone gets 1 bar, and at times it gets 2. Data speed is dreadful!! Under 1mbps. I tried everything before calling T-Mobile, including resetting network connection in settings, toggling airplane mode, etc.... T-Mobile said they “reset” my connection on their end and it still did nothing. Being this close to a tower, in a major city, with another T-Mobile phone getting good signal, my iPhone shouldn’t be running slower than a dial up modem! In other parts is the city when I do have full bars, the LTE is blazing fast. I put the phone in field test mode (*3001#12345#*) to see what it’s connecting to... when I have 1 bar it’s connecting to a band 2 frequency at about -115 dB. That is the signal it prefers to connect to and that’s the signal I get under 1 mbps. It switches to 2 bars sometimes and it’s connected to a band 66, which is much better speed wise, I get anywhere from 5 to 20 mbps. The signal strength on that band is around -100 dB. Still a trash signal strength, but much stronger than the the slow as **** band 2. Why wouldn’t the phone want to stay connected to the stronger band 66 signal? It will still almost always switch back to the weaker slower signal. Here is what really irks me and leads me to believe something may be wrong with the phone: T-Mobile sent me a cell spot signal booster. It connects to the tower with one box and another box boosts the LTE signal in the house. Thought for sure that would fix it, because the phone does great with a strong signal. At first setup, the signal booster works great. Stays connected to band 66 at 4 bars and runs between 5 and 20 mbps. Signal strength is -70 dB. Then all of a sudden without moving an inch in the house it drops down to 1 bar, won’t load a webpage! I check the connection and it’s back connecting to that crappy band 2, at -115 dB, completely ignoring the massively strong and fast signal present. Sometimes 10 minutes goes by before it connects back to the strong signal provided by the cell booster. Is this normal behavior for the widely known trash Intel modem in my $1300 phone, or do I have a faultly one? I have a feeling I already know the answer since my XS Max did almost the same thing. :(

I am now on my 2nd iPhone 11 Pro Max 256GB (AT&T) and my 3rd SIM card. Cellular signal continues to drop off while still showing bars and also sometimes randomly drops to no bars/no service while others around me with AT&T are fine. 1hr later, the phone will still not recover the signal on its own. The only way to fix is to reboot phone or turn airplane mode on and off. I have gone back and forth with AT&T and Apple. I have yet another genius bar appt Sat. I'm beyond frustrated.
