iOS 13 Apple Music and BMW's iDrive problems

Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else experience this:

I have a BMW with an iDrive media system. Before updating to iOS 13, it worked with my iPhone perfectly, over the bluetooth. However, after updating, I can't control the media playback (using the steering wheel) when I'm playing songs from A LOCAL PLAYLIST! If I play songs from an album or my whole songs library, controls work perfect. Also, if I play any online playlists (e.g. Pure Party playlist in Apple music) it works perfectly. There is something wrong about how the playback of LOCAL Apple Music playlists is being managed in iOS 13..

I have tried resetting (bluetooth and complete system restore) my phone and my car. I have also tried it with iPhone X and Xs Max and both had the same behaviour.

Devices to reproduce it:

BMW with an iDrive 4.0 system

iPhone X with iOS 13.1.1 (same issue persists with an iPhone Xs Max with iOS 13.1.1)

Apple Music

Steps to reproduce it:

1. Connect car's bluetooth to iPhone.

2. Play any song of any playlist.

3. Try to control the music playback (by choosing which song to play next)

4. System tries to skip to the selected song (by displaying it's playing it for a brief second, but not changing the sound), but is not able to.

I have the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. Everything was working perfectly on iOS13 though. The issue started after updating to 13.1 and it still persists with 13.1.1. I also tried a Mercedes and the issue is also present. The problem has to do with iOS13.1

This is a huge functionality issue that Apple has to address. I’ve submitted to bug reports and encourage you to do the same. Hopefully this would get fixed with the next update.

Is there a simple method to update to 13.2 beta3 and going back later to regular ios.

Can i update now, then make a backup of the phone on 13.2 beta 3 and later revert back to regular 13.2 and restore ?

thanks for advice. This is extremely annoying and makes so much additional work to get a functionality back which is basic for a mp3 music player and which is a crucial element of an apple music subscription i pay for. I can’t express how much this p isses me.

I too can confirm that iOS 13.2 beta 3 does address the issue with being unable to switch tracks in a playlist when using a car's audio system.

This hopefully means that the final 13.2 will still retain this fix, we'll need to check with the next beta / final release of 13.2 to ensure it's still fixed.

Would I upgrade to the 13.2 beta? For a personal, daily use phone, just for this fix? No I would not. It's a beta, and thus there will be other issues there, which could more significantly impact your use of your device.

If you *really* want to fix it right now, then I believe you can sign up for the public beta of iOS. I *think* it's probably similar to how it works for developers, you install a profile and that'll grant you access to the beta, and then you simply go into software update and upgrade. That's at least how the dev install works for me. I would a) back up the device fully, and b) strongly advise against installing a beta.

As for downgrading, it looks like you remove the profile and then have to restore the phone back to whatever the latest iOS version that is available, so that'd be 13.1.3. It does mean a full restore, so you may need to reconfigure a few things if the backup didn't, well, backup everything.

Thanks to all who have contacted Apple, despite the frustration from their support team. I'm pretty sure they have heard us loud and clear as it seems that the issue is fixed in iOS 13.2 Beta 3 according to those who have tested it. Let's all hope that this fix gets through to the final release.

For me, as long as it will be fixed, I'm happy to wait for an official release. Really appreciated your efforts.

I experienced the same problem with my Honda Civic (2012) since iOS 13.1

My iPhone is wired through usb and I can’t skip tracks with my personal playlist. With an Apple Music playlist, It works and I can change tracks with the steering wheel but with my own playlists, it doesn’t work at all. It changes something during one or two seconds on the screen but doesn’t charge the next or previous song and it returns on the current song.

i hope they will fix it.

I think beta 3 is the last beta. Because the build number finishes with the letter “a”. And Apple usually count down the letters k h d c and when they come to the letter a it’s usually the last beta before the official release. So if they don’t encounter some new major problem I think the next release is going to be the official one.

Hi. A temporary fix is to create a shortcut to run a playlist with the songs you want to listen to. When in your vehicle, via Siri run your shortcut using voice control. The Songs in the playlist can then be controlled using idrive and by the wheel on the steering. I’m on iOS 13.1.3 and this resolved my issue in not being able to change tracks using the vehicle input when connected to my vehicle over Bluetooth.

I have a same problem on my Mercedes since the recent update it does not allow me to flick or change the songs on my apple music using the knob in the car i have to change then through the playlist or by going in the app in my phone its annoying.

Apply needs to address these issue or these issues should be tested before the update is rolled out how do you expect me to go back on software update.

i should just stop using apple music
