Iphone 11 Pro & Carplay

I just upgraded from an Iphone X to Iphone 11 Pro. IOS 13.0 and now my Carplay sounds like an old Vinyl record with a scratch. playing music from the Phone skips randomly 5-15 seconds then skips again. I've reset the phone, I've erased the phone and just put 1 album on it, no luck. , updated to 13.1 and no change it still skips. My old Iphone X running 13.1 works perfectly. It's so bad I listen to XM now. and don't use my carplay to listen to music. My vehicle is a 2019 Mini Cooper JCW, I've had the dealership reset the ECU, any other ideas would be wonderful....

I have had almost the exact issue that many of you have been describing. I have a Mini Cooper 2019, and I am using Apple CarPlay. It worked perfectly fine with my iPhone X, and I recently upgraded to the iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 13.1.3. Whenever I would listen to music, every ten seconds or so the sound would cut out or stutter, making it basically unusable. Thanks to a great support call with an Apple engineer, I am happy to report that the issue is completely resolved.

Here are the things I initially tried to resolve the issue, based on suggestions from Apple Support:

  1. Reset All Settings (this did not help).
  2. Erase All Content and Settings, and restore iPhone from iCloud backup (this did not help).

Here are the steps that did resolve the issue:

  1. Connected my iPhone to my Windows 10 computer running iTunes.
  2. From iTunes, I clicked on the iPhone button, and in the top panel, I selected the Restore iPhone button. I restored the iPhone back to factory settings. As explained to me by the Apple engineer, this is not the same as Erasing All Content and Settings on the phone itself. Restoring the iPhone in this way completely wipes out the contents of the phone and performs a clean install of the operating system.
  3. Once the iPhone was finished restoring back to factory settings, I initially did not restore my iCloud backup. Instead, I set it up as a new phone.
  4. I removed the existing iPhone profile from my Mini Cooper, and then re-paired my car with CarPlay on my phone.
  5. Now the moment of truth -- I tested playing music from my iPhone through CarPlay, and sure enough, no dropouts or stutter. The music played flawlessly!
  6. I then decided to try restoring my iCloud backup to see if I could get all of my settings and apps back on my phone without reintroducing the problem. I did so by first running Erase All Content and Settings, and I then restored my latest iCloud backup.
  7. Once I completed the iCloud restore, I then went out to my Mini Cooper and deleted the existing iPhone profile from the car.
  8. I re-paired the iPhone with CarPlay, and then proceeded to play my music. The music played perfectly -- problem resolved!

I hope that these steps will work for all of you that are having this issue. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

Appreciate the link, its helpful to know that Apple is at least working on Carplay-related issues. In our case, the concern is that it is not an iOS-version issue, but more hardware-related, since it is only happening on iPhone 11's. For example, the iPhone 11 has a new ultra wide band radio, which I suppose could be the culprit based on other's descriptions of "interference" https://techcrunch.com/2019/12/05/apple-ultra-wideband-newer-iphones-location/

I also appreciate others spending a lot of time working with Apple support to troubleshoot. My thought though is that there must be a few BMW execs and engineers that have new iPhone 11s with the same issue. Our hope lies with them working with Apple to solve the problem.

This is happening with who ever has CarPlay and what ever car they have and if you have Apple pro 11 phone I'm working with Apple doing test on my phone and reporting issues all

the time it’s nothing to do with the dealership the issue is to do with the CarPlay and the Apple pro !!!! So u need to get Apple support to get you to work with the technical guys who will work with you to sort this out by recording the logs from your phone on this issue

I have read this forum with some interest over the last month or so, mainly as I was thinking of upgrading my iPhone and was concerned that it would not work correctly with Apple Carplay, my situation was as follows:

  • Mini Clubman Cooper S - September 2017 (2018 model with Apple Carplay fitted as part of the uprated Audio Pack)
  • iPhone 6, iOS always at the latest level up to 12.4.4 (Highest level of iOS for an iPhone 6)

Carplay and my iPhone 6 worked very well wirelessly with the very occasional glitch requiring me to pair my phone with the car again. Apple Maps, my music on the iPhone and phone calls all worked well with the occasional issue with maps when phone reception was very weak, a general issue nothing to do with Carplay.

I planned to upgrade to an iPhone 11 Pro Max as it met my needs (as one device) for phone calls, email, messaging, hotography, videos amongst all the others that my 6 could no longer supply. In addition I would be back on track with iOS 13 onwards including new versions of Carplay.

It was, then, quite worrying that all the issues vis a vis iPhone 11Pro and Carplay both on this forum and others might require me to rethink and perhaps get an iPhone XS as there didn't seem to be the same issues with those (and other previous models) and Carplay. The 11Pro is not cheap and having it not working with Carplay would be a definite downer!

In the end I decided to bite the bullet and I did get an iPhone 11Pro Max. That was about a month ago and wanted to update this forum with my experiences, first:

  • I reset all Bluetooth and Wireless settings in Carplay back to as delivered.
  • I installed my iPhone 11 Pro as a new phone and did NOT ship settings across from my iPhone 6 or a backup on my PC.
  • I connected my iPhone 11 Pro as an new device to Carplay as per Mini instructions.

The phone connected very easily and from then until now (fingers crossed) has worked flawlessly some points of interest are:

  • The phone connects much quicker (always wirelessly) than my iPhone 6 and usually from the pocket of my trousers or jacket. Music picks up exactly from last point played.
  • iOS 13 has an improved layout and function interface on Carplay.
  • Mapping is much quicker, although this is probably down to the faster iPhone and not Carplay.
  • The iPhone 11Pro Max is too big to fit in the wireless charger in the centre armrest in the Mini Clubman but it has such an improved battery life and it normally stays in my pocket. I have a very short USB to Lightening lead that can charge the phone on long journeys with it sitting in the small tray in front of the gearshift.
  • Music (on the phone) works flawlessly and streaming from Spotify works well but prone to the odd glitch if the signal area is weak or disappears.
  • Phone calls work very well no dropouts etc.
  • WhatsApp and messaging works well with voice replies OK (Siri)

I hope this is of interest as my experience seems at odds with most of the posts on this forum and may help others bite the bullet and upgrade as they might have been planning to. I had planned to return the iPhone 11Pro Max to Apple if it had all gone the wrong way as others here unfortunately have experienced but thankfully I am very pleased with my new phone and having it work so well with Carplay, quite a bit better that the iPhone 6, is an absolute bonus.

From observation what does make a difference is where the phone is. If it's in front of the cup holders it's generally fine. If I leave the phone in my pocket or have it on the passenger seat it's crap.

The chance that Apple doesn't know about this is 0% and the chance that there's a simple fix is 0%.

The fact that Apple hasn't said anything about it is crazy.

Hopefully they fix it by the iPhone 12 or by the time my lease is up.

I’m having two problems with my Kenwood Excelon DMX906S and my iPhone XS Max running iOS 13.3.

About half the songs played on Pandora repeat the first roughly one second of the song or ad.

Every 2-3 weeks wireless CarPlay stops connecting. Even when I plug the USB to Lightning cable in, CarPlay won’t start. I have to re-pair Bluetooth first, then authorize CarPlay and it works flawlessly for another 2-3 weeks.

The former issue sounds similar to what was reported with MINI owners with iPhone 11 models, but I have an XS Max and am using an aftermarket head unit.

The later could be a Bluetooth issue as it’s used to make the wireless CarPlay connection and when the issue occurred I was not connected to the Kenwood head unit via Bluetooth as I should have been.

So this is likely bigger than simply limited to the 11 model iPhones and BMW/MINI cars.

I have this issue on a 2019 BMW i3 using wireless CarPlay with my iPhone 11 Pro.

Wireless CarPlay worked fine for 6 months with iPhone XS. Now it skips constantly playing audio and phone calls drop with the iPhone 11 Pro. Makes CarPlay unusable.

I have iOS 13.3, but still doing it. I have been working w/ Apple tech support for 4 months (mostly just trying to get data to engineers, but really not much has happened yet) - and ultimately got a brand new warranty replacement iPhone 11 Pro today - and still doing it! It must be some kind of hardware/software issue built into iOS or the iPhone 11. It's 100% reproducible. Happens 100% of time with either new or old iPhone 11 Pro. Happens 0% of time with my old iPhone XS (now belonging to my wife).

WirED CarPlay in another car works fine. It's only a Wireless CarPlay issue.

I'm happy to have found this tread. I searched for this a few months ago but found nothing. I kept asking tech support if anyone else had the issue.

**New people when responding - please state more info about the problem:

-Make/model/year of car?

-Wired or wireless connection?

-Did CarPlay work with an older iPhone and then stop working when you got an iPhone 11 (this seems to be a common issue w/ this bug)?

-What is the actual problem (symptoms)?

CarPlay is buggy and it had little glitches with 3 older iPhones and a 2016 VW eGolf. But now with wireless CarPlay (2019 BMW i3) and iPhone 11 Pro, it is useless, skipping in music constantly, lagging/freezing/crashing, dropping calls after 2 minutes. This is a very specific and new problem and makes CarPlay unusable. It began the day I got the iPhone 11 Pro and wasn't fixed with brand new warranty replacement. The more info we get, the more likely Apple can fix it.

2016 Honda Accord. My iPhone 6sPlus worked beautifully. Not a single problem. The minute I got my 11, it’s been nothing but problems. If I plug the phone in to charge, and want to continue with Sirius, it cuts into that. If I’m trying to play my times, it skips, repeats, plays 5 notes of a song and skips into the next song, and does that again. Massively frustrating to have all this music that I love that I cannot play in my car! And I wonder if it would be any different in a newer car?

I can confirm that 13.3.1 fixes the issue of calls going between the phone and CarPlay. it also fixes the lag when selecting things.

I had Apple CarPlay in a 2019 BMW AlPINA B7 and a 2019 BMW i3. It was a great feature until I upgraded to an iPhone 11 Pro from an iPhone XS.

I’m happy Apple finally fixed this but waiting 132 days for a fix is less than ideal when you spend $1,350 on a phone. As a seasoned IT person I understand these things happen but ideally Apple would engage the community and let us know they were working on this.

All good now folks. The main basis of this thread was Mini then Mini/BMW ‘wireless CarPlay’ only.

All of those with wireless CarPlay, your issues have been fixed with 13.3.1.

if you’re having issues over wired. Maybe fire up another bug/topic and check your cables first and foremost. Also clean out the port on the phone. Ive had issues in the past with cables/ports and intermittent music on other devices such as headphone amps.

Good Luck

This thread has become a bit of a mess, primarily because multiple scenarios are being reported on the same thread. Ideally, we would have two separate threads, one for wired and one for wireless but that's water under the bridge. My thoughts, observations, and suggestions:

  1. Though not clear on the initial post, the thread began as an issue with wireless CarPlay on a Mini Cooper. For situational awareness, Mini Coopers with wireless CarPlay do not support wired CarPlay so there's no way to verify if the issue is present when connected via USB.
  2. I understand some people have a similar problem with WIRED CarPlay. We don't have enough information to conclude the problems have the same root cause. If I was a betting man, I would bet we have multiple causes for the various problems reported in this thread. I don't anticipate a single magic cure will fix all of these problems. Some of the wired issues could be related to issues with the cable and/or physical port (USB or Lightning) being dirty or damaged.
  3. I've seen multiple posts where someone tried something, posted the "fix" only to discover the problem returned. I recommend a bit more testing before proclaiming a solution.
  4. I've seen multiple posts suggesting 13.3.1 has resolved the issue. None of the beta versions of 13.3.1 resolved my issue (iPhone 11 Pro, wireless CarPlay, 2019 Mini Cooper) but I haven't experienced any issues since installing the final version of 13.3.1 a couple of days ago. That said, it's still premature to conclude the issue is resolved. I'll test for a few more days before calling it solved.
  5. For those with Wired CarPlay, I suggest (not a demand) one of you create a new thread clearly titled "iPhone 11 and Wired CarPlay" to ensure that your issues, which may be caused by something different than the wireless CarPlay issues, are distinctly identified and segregated from wireless CarPlay which uses a somewhat complex combination of Bluetooth and WiFI (initial connection via Bluetooth then hand-off to WiFi) that adds a whole different layer to the mix. Similarly, if the problem does continue unresolved for some with wireless CarPlay, I encourage one of you to create a new thread specifically for iPhone 11 and WIRELESS. If I start to experience problems, I'll create a new thread myself if not already created. Last thing on this, if you do create a new thread, please post a link to it in this thread so that subscribers of this thread can move over to the appropriate new thread.
  6. Good luck to all of you!
