iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

I have an iPhone Pro Max 12, am on ios 14.4.2 and have the same problem. Additionally, I have 'change with buttons' off...but my side volume buttons still function the same. Totally confusing and annoying.

Apple..... WHEN are you going to address this issue.? Your phones are of no value if we mill all of our calls.

3. Are you having this problem with an iPhone X or later? If so, you may want to check this particular setting. This setting is called Attention Aware Features. iPhone X and later models include TrueDepth cameras. Your iPhone’s TrueDepth camera, by using the face detection algorithm, will decide if you are looking at your device or not. When this feature is enabled, your iPhone will lower the volume of alerts if you are looking at your iPhone.

On your device, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and see if Attention Aware Features is enabled or now. If it is enabled, turn it off to see if your issue is fixed.

This is a Bluetooth issue. My iPhone 11 always drives ringer and alert sound volume to zero after I disconnect from a Bluetooth device. Whether it is from my car, AirPod pros or a Bluetooth speaker it always defaults volume to zero. I keep searching the internet to see if Apple intended for this. I can’t see a reason for why you would want to default to zero so I think it’s a bug. I was hoping they would fix this in iOS 14. I even reported this issue during Beta testing. Maybe one day they will patch this.

Hey all!

It’s an ongoing problem.

I Am currently in my 2020 gmc truck. iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 14 software update . Prior to entering the vehicle, I Turned volume to max on my phone. Started truck, connected to Bluetooth and ringer volume automatically lowered. Turned ignition off, exited the vehicle and ringer was lowered. So for me the problem still exist!

I also have GM engineer checking into this from my dealership.

No but it’s it was my girlfriend’s phone which is not in my possession right now and there is no guarantee I could find the feature again. I just kept playing with settings and calling her phone until it worked how she wanted. It’s a newer iphone with features my 5 year old iPhone 7 doesn’t have and I don’t want.

My guess is 90% of the problems are simple feature updates that were changed or added for no valid reason that no one, including apple, knows how to work. We are nothing but beta testers to apple.

Turning the Attention Awareness feature off did not resolve the issue with my iPhone 11. On the phone with Apple Support to try and find a solution to this problem. Will report back with findings.

No, it doesn't seem to be everyone's problem. However, based on JeffJ1984's description, that's what they were thinking of.

If you’re ever browsing here and see a post on background app activity on iCloud mail account, maybe you could take a glance. Maybe they’re all tied together. :).

Unfortunately, iCloud is not really something I'm especially knowledgeable about. Other than using it to back up my phone, I don't interact with it very much.

Okay, just spent an hour on the phone with a senior advisor in the tech support division. They uploaded a bunch of analytics data directly off my phone. Some of that data will have to be analyzed by engineering. I should hear back within a day or two to get their recommendation. If they find a software issue iOS or app, they will recommend a fix accordingly. If it turns out to be hardware I will get a new iPhone. I will update as more information becomes available.

Thanks for the update. Engineering can take a bit of time. My only guess is software. We cant all have hardware issues. Unless we bought our phones around the same time from a similar batch. I believe you mentioned the iPhone 11? That’s what I have too. Maybe that’s it. That could possibly be hardware. I’ll look forward to hearing how it ended up for you. Good Luck!

I am of the opinion our voices are not being heard; I am using GM and my dealership to put pressure on Apple to fix this. The dealer tells me others are having problems. As I told the dealer I expected GM software to work with iOS flawlessly and GM needs to work with Apple to get a fix! After trying every suggestion on both threads for a fix over the past six months ( that did not fix the issue) this is what I believe is happening. When iOS connects by Bluetooth to my vehicle the ios software lowers the volume to match volume settings in my truck to keep from blasting excess volume at start up; this is fine but issue most are having is it stays at lower volume levels and miss incoming calls due to low ringer volume.

Update: I heard back from the senior advisor overseeing my case. Engineering wants me to monitor ringer and alert volume and document through recording and time stamps the volume reduction instances. When I have three occurrences documented, I need to submit the data for further analysis. In the last 24 hours I have only had one event to document so this might take a few days. I will report back in a few days.
