iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

I have an iPhone Pro Max 12, am on ios 14.4.2 and have the same problem. Additionally, I have 'change with buttons' off...but my side volume buttons still function the same. Totally confusing and annoying.

Apple..... WHEN are you going to address this issue.? Your phones are of no value if we mill all of our calls.

Been there, done that! In fact with both phones! I have done every conceivable fix that has been recommended. It’s an Apple software problem they will not acknowledge. Perhaps I don’t know how to fix it?? What is a few thousand users compared to the millions of phones they have? Every fixed, the phone, after a period goes back to turning the volume down on its own.

I wonder if your fix will last very long? Other users including myself, have found that it goes back to the same way

Hey guys. It seems they wont acknowledge this issue here. I’m not sure it they even check those support discussions. Why dont we start a hashtag on twitter & tag them on every tweet for them to notice?

any hashtag ideas we can use to bring their attention? I also went to our local apple store & they said its not possible that the volume goes down on its own!

This is a user-to-user forum, as was explained in the Terms of Use to which we all agreed when we registered. Apple's participation here is minimal. If you want to "get Apple's attention", contact them directly. You can use the Contact Support link at the top right of every page of these forums.

I have same problem It happens regardless of position ot "change with buttons" option. Seems to happen with use of Airpods and/or Bluetooth connection to my car radio. I have friend with same phone and software and he uses off brand wireless ear buds and he has no problem. It's got to be a flaw with software of Airpods. Incidentally, I hate the "Airpods connected" alert everytime I pick up my phone.

I have no AirPods, I’ve turn my Bluetooth off, I have tried all the suggested fixtures including, reset and restore. Yeah both my iPhones still had the volume turned down on their own. Regardless, this will never stop on the thousands of phones, Until the software problem is fixed! Because of the now, 1 billion iPhones out there, apple will turn their back on a few thousand and not acknowledge the problems!!

No, it’s more like, it’s impossible for Apple to acknowledge and fix the problem! People are posting all the things they have tried to fix it! From A-to-Z, nothing works! It’s time to realize, it’s not going to be fixed, Apple has turned it back on its customers, and this is the way our phones are going to be! We should except that, or do you get a competitors phone! People that say they are returning their third phone because of the problem , Are only hitting their heads on a wall continuously! It’s no use talking to Apple, they will only tell you, that it’s Impossible to happen, and that you were stupid!

Time to give up!

I hope this at least meets the edges of the definition of technical support. Support Advisors can provide valuable technical support to Users for various issues. I’ve heard “User Error”. (Which was a decent assessment) but no one has ever called me “stupid”. There may be new Users on here and it’s important they have an accurate view of the many Apple Support tools there are available to them. I feel for the Users on this thread that are struggling with this issue. I’m following it because I was also. I’m fortunate that just turning off the choice to adjust the ringer with side buttons worked for me. I hope you find a solution, whatever that may be. Good Luck. :)

Okay, let's look at all the responses because this is driving us crazy. Here are some of the facts stated on this thread:

Volume of ringer and alerts drops to zero whether or not the "change with buttons" is on

It happens with or without Airpods or off brands of wireless headphones

It happens with or without bluetooth activated (one contributor said it happens with bluetooth off)

It happens with many models of iphones, new or old

It doesn't happen with some identical models (my friend has an identical 8)

Why do some people not have the problem? Are we not all downloading the same software updates? I just downloaded 14.1 hoping that would correct the problem but it didn't. So WHAT IS THE COMMON THREAD WE ALL HAVE?

It happens to me using Airpods or when I hop in my car and the radio bluetooth turns off the airpods and sends the signal to the car radio. Is bluetooth the real culprit? Not according to one of you. Is there some other setting on the phone causing this? I am going to see my friend tomorrow. He has identical 8 and I'm going to go through every setting and change all mine to his and see what happens. I hope that one of the Apple support people who monitor these forums is trying to find the solution.

This is the strangest thing. There does not seem a common thread , other than people describing that it is happening to their phones and we all need our phones to operate successfully for whatever reason is important to us. I’ll continue to follow this thread but I’ve been lucky. Changing the settings to not use my side buttons to adjust ringer volume has done the trick for me. It will be fascinating when a solution is identified. I wish everyone luck and quick resolution. I’ll be paying attention.
