iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

I have an iPhone Pro Max 12, am on ios 14.4.2 and have the same problem. Additionally, I have 'change with buttons' off...but my side volume buttons still function the same. Totally confusing and annoying.

Apple..... WHEN are you going to address this issue.? Your phones are of no value if we mill all of our calls.

One thing I do not see mentioned frequently that I realize may be a part of accessibilities features but I have adjusted these features to avoid any change in ringer volume. Let’s see if my description is clear or not;

sometimes I would get an indication that I had lost volume on ringer because a while bar at the top left side of the screen, right where the volume buttons are (my volume buttons have been turned off for awhile now) would flash and slide all the way down. I would then check volume and volume would be off again. It was fast and I couldn’t comment on if it happened 100% of the time. It is something that happened through several updates and that I had made comment on previously . It is the usual white bar you also see when using the side volume buttons. I just wouldn’t be using them at the time. I would see it most often when disconnecting a call. It’s just something I noticed occasionally.

The most puzzling part of this issue for me is how many users have had the issue carry through actual device changes. Also the length of time this has been going on for. Again, my issue seems to have been corrected.

Well, yesterday evening I checked ringers and alerts and slide was over 3/4 of the way. I completely closed settings. 30 minutes later I had a text message come thru on my laptop (which is also MacBook) but my phone did not send me the chirp to alert me of the text, yet the text was there. I was not using bluetooth. So I then checked my ringer and alerts again and it was off! Now why did that happen? The only thing I did was close settings. So I'm wondering could this be a virus? No, I don't think so because some of you are having it on 2nd and 3rd new phones. So what do we have in common and I'm wondering, do you all have iCloud back up storage? I do. I use it so all my devices can connect. If we all are using iCloud perhaps that could be the common link. I'm no engineer, just a tool guy but, hey, we must have something in common. Just thinking.

I’m no Engineer either but I believe that’s the only option for Apple Support at this point wait for an update with a bug fix. That’s just my guess, that’s all. I check my Sounds and Haptics setting constantly. That’s just my solution for now. We all know the world is a crazy place right now. If my focus is checking my settings like a maniac for awhile longer then I’ll make do. Please, I need my ringer for both important work and family reasons right now like everyone else, so I am not taking it lightly. You got an answer that’s good news.

As reported by one User this morning there was a response from Apple Support. Hopefully that update will do the trick. This thread feels like a lot of Users but when you compare it’s size to the amount of Users around the world, it’s a drop in the bucket. So, as all the Volunteers point out with in the Forum going through the right channels can bring the desired results. I’ll make sure to read all update info as it becomes available looking for this fix. I do firmly believe it’s being worked on, it just won’t be resolved tomorrow ! :). Good Luck!

Of course we’re all hoping for a fix. Again, we all have significant and valid reasons for wanting and needing our ringer to work. My vibrate doesn’t and hasn’t ever worked.. I have noticed some comments where some User’s Heptics sound bar kind of creeps down where mine goes from all the way up to silent. Another thing I was curious about was that all the sounds on my phone will cease in that category. I’ll have no more keyboard clicks, eg. That will be an indicator that helps me check for ringer also.

I’m sorry.. I’m a research fool but I know little about other products, not that I’d comment anyways other than to say I hope it all works out for you. I’m going to sit it out for any update that may have a bug fix. I have to concur that I feel fairly confident it will straighten itself out at that point. It’s not easy on anyone. Again, I wish you luck! :)

This issue has been an issue since at least Dec of 2019. How is it that Apple isn’t owning up to it. It seems to be happening with a majority of buyers these days. It’s ridiculous that the only way I can hear someone when I get a phone call is to put them on speaker. Half the time my volume goes down on its own and I never hear my phone ring. My text tones are silent. No update has helped the situation. What can we do as consumers to get Apple to own up to this issue?

This information is easy enough to find online. Other than vetting the source there’s no way to verify it. This issue is identified. it just seems impossible to me that Apple is not aware of the issue and working on it. There are pages of fixes for the issue online. I am in no way suggesting those tips be followed or that outside research is the answer. As a matter of fact, personally I always stick to Apple Support’s recommendations and troubleshooting steps. Outside research can be a valuable tool in providing tech support when troubleshooting problems. As long as it is always considered as outside research not official Apple information. You traced this back to 12/2019 using this thread? Thanks! I apologize if I rambled. It’s early here. :)

I'm on an iPhone XR and since the last software update, my ringer randomly sets itself to zero. No idea why. I always have my set ringer with buttons disabled, because I like the buttons to control just volume. Last time my phone set itself to zero on the ringer, I decided to turn the volume up with the side buttons, and wouldn't you know it, the ringer volume increased along with it. THIS IS WITH THE DISABLE RINGER CHANGE WITH BUTTONS BEING ACTIVATED!

So yeah, Apple has a bug that's causing it. The crappy thing is, you never know when the ringer is going to go to zero. So you miss alarms/calls. Hopefully they fix this soon.
