iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

I have an iPhone Pro Max 12, am on ios 14.4.2 and have the same problem. Additionally, I have 'change with buttons' off...but my side volume buttons still function the same. Totally confusing and annoying.

Apple..... WHEN are you going to address this issue.? Your phones are of no value if we mill all of our calls.

I have a brand new iPhone 11 Pro Max running the most recent software update. My phone has done this since getting the new phone (I had an iPhone X previously with no issue such as this). It seems we all have the same problem on this thread and Apple Support has only replied to the individual who started this thread. He hasn’t “solved” his issue via Apple’s assistance, he’s just found a work around by turning off the “Volume Adjust With Side Burton’s.” That shouldn’t be the only solution. An Apple adviser needs to reply to others on this thread with more permanent and correct solutions.

Yeah I went through the exact same thing with an advisor back in July when I started the new thread. Since this one is a year old, and labeled as solved, they don’t follow it or pay it any attention. The new thread is here:

Anyway, after spending hours on the phone with engineering etc etc testing blah blah blah analytics then more testing, the end result was them trying to get me to make an insurance claim for a new phone on my own dime. I gave up. The problem stopped for awhile in late August, then my phone automatically updated and it started again. I give up. One more payment to pay this phone off and I’m done. I’ve been dealing with this issue since October of 2019.

Hopefully it will workout. Engineering doesn’t deal directly with Users. They will always report to a Senior Advisor that you’re most likely dealing with for that Advisor to convey findings to you. It’s a mysterious world. So far I’ve had luck with the Accessibilities settings fix. Then again, it’s only been an afternoon :) If it’s related to updates I don’t know if a new phone would fix it. I’m wishing you lots of luck and hopefully a fix soon.

Frustrating isn’t it. I get it, I tried that back in October 2019 when this thread first started.

But Apple doesn’t really pay attention to this one since it’s labeled solved. I started a new one back in July. I frequently post the link and urge everyone to post there to keep the momentum going.

Link below to the current “not solved” thread I started:

Try this new link: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251565180?login=true&page=5 where the post isn’t marked as Solved. So we can have someone in apple (maybe) look into it.

This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple's participation is minimal. The Community Specialists are the only Apple employees you'll see replying here. Their job is to respond to posts that have gone unanswered for at least 12 hours and that can be answered by a referral to a support article (for the most part). If you want to get Apple's attention, contact them directly. You can use the Contact Support link at the top right of every page of these forums.

Why can’t y’all just admit this is a bug that needs to be fixed and quit with all these things to do when we have all done them already!!!

I reread this thread and have tried the following:

  • full erase and restore iPhone (iOS14)
  • turned off adjust ringer/alert volume with buttons.
  • turned off awareness feature
  • left phone unpaired from Bluetooth

Unfortunately none of these solutions solved the problem of the volume automatically being driven to zero. I’m not implying these solutions don’t work, they just haven’t worked for my iPhone (11).

Frustrating indeed. There is help available through Apple Support. Some advice though on how to get the most effective help from Apple:

  1. First try some basic fixes: reset, restore, etc.
  2. Try to spot a pattern (Time, other apps running, Bluetooth on/off, etc)

When you speak to an advisor, you now have some information they can use in troubleshooting the problem. They often will try to pinpoint what else is happening with your phone when the volume goes down. I think this is an unusual problem that Apple hasn’t found a definitive fix for yet. Hopefully through data collection from users’ phones they can resolve this issue.

Hey Apple, isn’t this community post enough proof that it is a real problem that needs to be fixed? Have you updated your OS and experience the same thing? At least one of you/your staff should have this problem by now. What you can do is at least update the users of a possible solution or you are looking into the problem. We’ve tried all workarounds on this post. Nothing works. This is my most recent capture of the incident.

as you can see, it doesn’t make sense that any of us will turn down the volume when there’s a silent feature on the side button, right?

Updated to 14.1 but no joy. Really bizarre behaviour of software. I will go into the settings to the ‘Sounds and haptics’ and the ringer volume will be zero. I come out of the setting and the go back into it a few seconds later, and ringer volume is at around 80% volume without me changing it. Go back in 10 minutes later and it’s back to zero % again.

Here are two screen shots taken within 10 seconds of each other:

The iPhone 12 Max Pro is deciding how loud my phones volume should be. Tells me that I’ve had it on Max volume for 7 days. I use my phone to stream music while working. I have it on Max volume for clarity I actually control the volume with my vehicles volume control.

This is enough for me to say good bye to iPhones and hello to Android if it’s not changed.
