iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

Hello Derryl S,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! It's my understanding that you have an issue where the volume on your device appears to be lowering on its own. I am happy to help.

I have a few questions to gain more details:

-Do you have any wired, or Bluetooth headphones connected to your iPhone when you notice this behavior? If so, when you disconnect the headphones, does the behavior remain?

-Do you use a protective case on your iPhone? If so, when you remove this, does the behavior continue?

-Does your Volume key feel stuck or sticky in anyway?

-When you restart your device as normal, is there improvement to this issue: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.

If you're using an iPhone X or later, please check to see if 'Attention Aware Features' is enabled, which lowers the volume of alerts: About Attention Aware features on your iPhone X or iPad Pro - Apple Support.

If you continue to have the same issue, please try a force restart next: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support.

Reach back out if you need continued support.

Take care.

So I did some further testing, and when I sit in my car and open my home screen on my phone, then turn the car on, as soon as the phone auto connects, I can watch my ringer volume animation on top of the screen lower to about 1/4 volume. If I turn it back up when the car is still running it stays at 100%, but as soon as I turn the car off and the phone disconnects, it goes right back down to 1/4 volume. This happens every single time that I'm in my 2017 ford fusion.

This happens to my wife's phone and my brother's phone in his mustang. All of us are using iPhone 6s+ using the latest IOS. This problem didn't start for any of us until 13.1

Good news! I downloaded the latest beta IOS, 13.4, yesterday afternoon and the ringer volume problem has gone away. I drove my vehicle twice and the ringer volume remained at the level I set it at. So you can either download the latest beta version to fix the problem immediately or wait for Apple to release the next official update with the correction.

This is happening to me to, with iOS 13.5.

There is a bug in the Music app. (I found out about this in other online forums). It can reproduced as follows: Start playing music. Lock the phone. On the Lock Screen, pause the music. Now if you adjust volume using the side buttons, the volume of Ringer and Alerts is changed (even if you have disabled Change With Buttons in Settings).

It has nothing to do with anyone’s car or CarPlay app. I don’t use either. I have 4 Bluetooth devices I connect to and my ringer volume reduces when I connect to any of them. Two are Bose aviation headsets, one is a Lightspeed aviation headset and one is a Garmin GDL antenna. The antenna does not provide audio of any kind. All it does through Bluetooth is give aviation weather and traffic information to display on my phone.

I contacted support and they acted like it was a new problem. The chat was dropped on the first attempt. One the second attempt they had me reset (turn off) the phone so they could see what happens on the reboot which ended that chat. I haven’t been able to reconnect with them since. EVERYONE who thinks this is a problem needs to connect with Apple support and let them know it needs to be fixed. 2 or 3 people contacting support won’t get anything accomplished even if they have a million complaining about it here.

I hope this at least meets the edges of the definition of technical support. Support Advisors can provide valuable technical support to Users for various issues. I’ve heard “User Error”. (Which was a decent assessment) but no one has ever called me “stupid”. There may be new Users on here and it’s important they have an accurate view of the many Apple Support tools there are available to them. I feel for the Users on this thread that are struggling with this issue. I’m following it because I was also. I’m fortunate that just turning off the choice to adjust the ringer with side buttons worked for me. I hope you find a solution, whatever that may be. Good Luck. :)

So I was having the same problem where I couldn’t get my volume to stay up. As soon as I would turn it up it’d go back down. So when I went to my car and my phone automatically connected, it played and I had no problems. But when I connected my speaker or airpods it would keep going down. I found the only way to resolve it while not in my car was to turn the Bluetooth off.

with it off it has been working fine. I am taking my phone to get checked out still though. Will update after ☺️
