iPhone ringer volume keeps turning down

Since upgrading to iOS 13.1(now 13.1.2), the volume on the phone that that I normally have set on maximum level, keeps lowering on its own to about 25%. I became aware of the problem when my alerts (email, text, other alerts) were often barely audible if phone was in my pants pocket.

I can raise it back to maximum and it can lower on it's own within a few minutes even if the phone has not been in use, having any activity, or even wakened. One I time raised the volume, plugged it in to charge while in the car, picked it up less than two minutes later and the volume had dropped. In a thirty minute timeframe of checking, the volume dropped four times. The phone has now gone an hour without the volume changing so doesn't appear to be time related.

All though these events I did not use (or touch) the side volume buttons other than to raise it back to my normal levels.

Under settings/sounds & haptics, the Change with Buttons is on and does function.

I have an iPhone Pro Max 12, am on ios 14.4.2 and have the same problem. Additionally, I have 'change with buttons' off...but my side volume buttons still function the same. Totally confusing and annoying.

Apple..... WHEN are you going to address this issue.? Your phones are of no value if we mill all of our calls.

Even after the iOS 13.3.1 update, this problem happens. I’ve tried everything, including changing the ‘attention-aware’ settings in Face ID and Accessibility.

This problem is absolutely maddening.

This issue has something to do with how iOS automatically controls volumes in iOS 13, and with how it handles Bluetooth audio devices. Perhaps it’s incorrectly saving the last volume level of each Bluetooth device. I suspect AirPods are unaffected by this problem. Apple, please fix this for all Bluetooth devices!

I believe it is a Bluetooth issue as well; I can have the volume turned up on my phone and when I connect to my 2020 GMC Sierra the volume automatically lowers. When disconnecting from my trucks Bluetooth the ringer volume stays at the lower volume. And I use a leather holster for my phone so no way can I hear the ring volume at the lower volume level.

I too, have a GMC car - and all the GM vehicles use the same infotainment software. Can we take a poll here? Is everyone who experiences the problem using GM vehicles?

On a separate note, my problem is not easily reproducible. Many times I use the phone in the car w Bluetooth and do not experience a ringer volume change. I am now trying to check more often, but I think it happens at other times too, without the involvement of GM software.

For Bluetooth headphones I tend to use Bose and not sure if there are any interactions there.

In the software business (which I am part of) it can be said that a reproducible problem can always be fixed, but an intermittent, irregular problem is a devil to catch and usually requires special instrumentation, like a log file, and triggers when the problem occurs etc. At the least Apple should create a “ringer volume change” log file for debug purposes.

I’ve been noticing it when I want to be on time to work. I’ve been having this problem for a while (around the new update’s launch) and only noticed what was happening recently. My alarms are very quiet. That’s what I first noticed. However, my notifications are also more subtle. But the most important thing my phone does is wake me up. And it’s having a hard time. I have it set in my setting on max and don’t have the volume rockers change ringer enabled. This is very annoying it it seems to happen at least a couple times a week.

On my new I Phone 11 I have this same issue, I think that it's the lock screen function that seems to be causing it. I had to manually go into lock screen and add my ringtone for my phone ringer from the default chime. There is a setting in do not disturb that silences calls when lock screen is on that I could not modify or turn off. I think this is probably where the problem lies. After I modified my lock screen ringtone it seems to be working now.

I was having all the same problems with a relatively new iPhone 11 Pro. Lost it last week (and of course, find my iphone didn't work... add it to the list of problems with that phone). I purchased a new 11 Pro and have had ZERO problems since. Maybe it is hardware, not software, that is messed up. Quality control absent on production floor?

In my case, volume always goes down as soon as I receive any notification whilst using my AirPods. So, if I'm listening to music on my AirPods and my iPhone receives any notification (iMessage, Reminders or Calendar alert...) the music volume is turned down for me to listen the notification (as usual) but it never goes back to it's original level automatically!

The only workaround I've found is to unlock the iPhone and let the volume instantly return to its previous level... this is really annoying!!

Same problem with 2020 Chevy Silverado and iPhone 8. As soon as I get in the truck and the phone connects to BT, the ringer volume drops to zero. Which in itself is ok, but when I get out of the truck, it doesnt turn ringer volume back up to where it was beforehand. So like others, I forget to turn it back up and miss calls. That's the real issue. This same phone did not do that with my 2015 Chevy.
