My iPhone 11 disconnects from WiFi while using FaceTime (video)

While FaceTiming using my new AT&T iPhone 11, the phone disconnects from my home WiFi during the FaceTime, then reconnect as soon as I end the FaceTime. All software is up to date as of this posting.

OK so before I start explaining the fix. Let me first start by saying that I followed all and any solutions that was out on the web in terms of turn off this setting and turn this on and log in/out of this and etc. Nothing worked!!!! So I was able to finally get a really good expert person at Apple with 11+ years experience. This issue is related to anyone that may have done a transfer from iPhone to iPhone. The issue is that when backed up its pulling in corruption and causing the FaceTime to work properly. Good news / bad news is: Good news, there is a fix. The fix is to reset your phone and wipe the phone completely. When you restart the phone install as a new setup and not from a backup. The bad news is that you have to set it up as a new clean install and will need to re-download most of your apps. There are some apps that are standard that will pull just simply from cloud and things like your contact list and etc. I tested FaceTime on new install and it worked without any issues. It sucks because I have a lot backed up and now I had to reinstall a lot of my old apps and settings but it will ensure you have a clean backup moving forward and not a corrupt. Let me know how it goes for those that have had the same issue with FaceTime like I did (where wifi would drop as soon as it connected).

I don’t have wifi assist on and will not turn it on until Verizon actually becomes truly unlimited which is likely never. Only solution is to turn off cellular data for FaceTime. Almost like FaceTime is always on wifi assist. Btw, wish there were separate options for FaceTime audio and FaceTime video. Also, this only happens to me when on crappy hotel WiFi which further points to FaceTime having an internal WiFi assist bug/switch.

Making some progress...

  • On home Wi-fi: FaceTime audio calls work fine over Wi-fi.
  • On a pocket Wi-fi: FaceTime audio calls work fine over Wi-fi.
  • On my friend's pocket Wi-fi: FaceTime audio calls work fine over Wi-fi.
  • On work Wi-fi: iPhone flips to 4G for FaceTime audio calls, back to Wi-fi when the call is done.

I installed and control my office Wi-fi (plugged into an ethernet jack), but I don't have access to the main router/gateway in the building. I suspect ports are blocked and causing FaceTime not to work. Screen sharing has never worked using my work internet - I suspect that's a port problem as well.

Found this article on FaceTime and ports: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202078

Of course, can't speak for everyone, but it's leaning toward blocked ports for me and nothing hardware or iOS related.
