My iPhone 11 disconnects from WiFi while using FaceTime (video)

While FaceTiming using my new AT&T iPhone 11, the phone disconnects from my home WiFi during the FaceTime, then reconnect as soon as I end the FaceTime. All software is up to date as of this posting.

OK so before I start explaining the fix. Let me first start by saying that I followed all and any solutions that was out on the web in terms of turn off this setting and turn this on and log in/out of this and etc. Nothing worked!!!! So I was able to finally get a really good expert person at Apple with 11+ years experience. This issue is related to anyone that may have done a transfer from iPhone to iPhone. The issue is that when backed up its pulling in corruption and causing the FaceTime to work properly. Good news / bad news is: Good news, there is a fix. The fix is to reset your phone and wipe the phone completely. When you restart the phone install as a new setup and not from a backup. The bad news is that you have to set it up as a new clean install and will need to re-download most of your apps. There are some apps that are standard that will pull just simply from cloud and things like your contact list and etc. I tested FaceTime on new install and it worked without any issues. It sucks because I have a lot backed up and now I had to reinstall a lot of my old apps and settings but it will ensure you have a clean backup moving forward and not a corrupt. Let me know how it goes for those that have had the same issue with FaceTime like I did (where wifi would drop as soon as it connected).

Apple might be good in fixing some bugs, but this one they take it as a "feature" - some developers thought that people have bad internet connections like in the whole Bay Area (80% of households rely on Comcast which is really overloaded on old coaxial infrastructure, compared with the LTE network coverage which is among the best in the country).

I used to live there, and indeed, I preferred LTE over WiFi. However, WiFi assist isn't useful at all.

I noticed something interesting today within my Wifi Router since it is a Tri-Band. The device that is having issues with Facetime on the network is listed as connected on the 2.4 GHz channel. Mine is on the 5GHz Channel 2, interesting but not sure why that device was connecting to the slower speed wifi channel but there could also be relation to the issue there.

I'm continuing to monitor and test.

I have same issue on IOS 14. I always thought this might be dodgy Wi-fi at home but don’t have any other issues with Wi-fi dropping, just when I start a FaceTime call. I only just found this thread.

sounds like loads of people are having this issue and it’s been going on for years and Apple haven’t done a thing. A dreadful bug that should be fixed. And don’t tell me to reset network settings, that does nothing.

with iOS 14 I am experiencing still the same problem.

I thought also it was a problem of my wifi connection, but definitely not true: I changed the AP at home and I tried also in the office. Always the same issue, so clearly a problem of iOS.

It is even more annoying when I call some old device (like iPhone 5), with which the call drops after going to 4G and trying to reconnect...

Unbelievable that the issue is still around.

The only time I have this problem is when connected to captive WiFi. It did not happen to my 6s which had a Qualcomm modem. Started happening when “upgraded” to the XR with an Intel modem. Was hoping that upgrading to the 12 Pro with a Qualcomm modem would solve the issue but it’s just as bad. It always happens when on captive WiFi and it’s every time I try to use FaceTime. Seems like a bug in the Modem firmware. About to go back to the 6s.

Hello everyone, I think it’s something with 2.4Ghz Vs 5Ghz connections on our routers…do you guys have the auto switch type of wireless routers where there’s a single WiFi network and the router chooses 2.4/5 for your device? I have AT&T fiber with the AT&T provided router that does auto switching. I find it does a terrible job. I’m curious if I pick up a new Wifi 6 router with mesh networking (that is HomeKit compatible) will the issue persist?
