My iPhone 11 disconnects from WiFi while using FaceTime (video)

While FaceTiming using my new AT&T iPhone 11, the phone disconnects from my home WiFi during the FaceTime, then reconnect as soon as I end the FaceTime. All software is up to date as of this posting.

I am also having this issue. I call my wife and kids every morning and I’m on Wi-Fi or standing next to a Wi-Fi access point and it won’t show connection to Wi-Fi during the call and the picture is very choppy (my wife is also on Wi-Fi (very strong Wi-Fi at home)) this is a huge problem and needs to be fixed. Are you “APPLE” seeing this issue in testing?? Please help us.

All I can do is echo this sentiment and applaud the delivery – thank you, @J-in-Toronto. I have been a loyal iPhone and iPad customer since the 3G, over 12 years ago.

FaceTime is one of Apple's core ecosystem USPs and it is chronically broken for a serious number of users. Or maybe those of us suffering with this issue really are in the insignificant minority. Because Apple clearly does not care enough to fix or even acknowledge it. This is customer service at its worst.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max on the newest IOS 14.4 and this keeps on happening. The call keeps on dropping to poor connection and goes to LTE instead of wifi.. Super annoying then the calls start to go to reconnecting and even fail. Additionally, anyone else has the issue of the iPhone 12 not charging. It charges and then stops and then starts again and keeps doing this. Ill only be able to charge about 70% even when I leave it overnight.

The only time I have this problem is when connected to captive WiFi. It did not happen to my 6s which had a Qualcomm modem. Started happening when “upgraded” to the XR with an Intel modem. Was hoping that upgrading to the 12 Pro with a Qualcomm modem would solve the issue but it’s just as bad. It always happens when on captive WiFi and it’s every time I try to use FaceTime. Seems like a bug in the Modem firmware. About to go back to the 6s.

I upgraded from the iPhone XR to the 12 Pro thinking that it was the stupid Intel modem causing the issue and the issue of not being able to use GPS with cellular data turned turned off but I was wrong, still happening with the Qualcomm Modem. I miss my iPhone 6s, sure it was slow loading games but didn’t have these silly issues. I would switch back to my 6s if the the Touch ID wasn’t broken. My daughters 7 and my wife’s 8 also do not have these issues. Almost seems like a racket! In cahoots with the carriers much???

I don’t have wifi assist on and will not turn it on until Verizon actually becomes truly unlimited which is likely never. Only solution is to turn off cellular data for FaceTime. Almost like FaceTime is always on wifi assist. Btw, wish there were separate options for FaceTime audio and FaceTime video. Also, this only happens to me when on crappy hotel WiFi which further points to FaceTime having an internal WiFi assist bug/switch.

Hello everyone, I think it’s something with 2.4Ghz Vs 5Ghz connections on our routers…do you guys have the auto switch type of wireless routers where there’s a single WiFi network and the router chooses 2.4/5 for your device? I have AT&T fiber with the AT&T provided router that does auto switching. I find it does a terrible job. I’m curious if I pick up a new Wifi 6 router with mesh networking (that is HomeKit compatible) will the issue persist?

iPhone 12pro, latest iOS.

I don't think this is a bluetooth issue (at least for me). I have tried using Airpods as well as the iPhone speaker but the result is the same: start a FaceTime audio call and the phone switches from full strength Wi-fi to 4G. End the call and Wi-fi is back on.

Just noticed this doesn't happen on my home Wi-fi, only on my office Wi-fi (which I set up). Some folks mentioned 2.4GHz vs 5Ghz or turning Wi-fi assist off. I'll play around and post what I find, but it seems router related?

In any event, it's annoying.
