Why does my Music start playing automatically when I plug in headphones?

Ever since the iOS 13 update, whenever I plug in my headphones to make a call my Music app automatically starts playing music. How do I get it to stop?

Ive installed the bug fix update and I’ve even turned off all settings for the Music app and unchecked all the music folders in the app. I’ve tried everything.

It’s really annoying. Any ideas? Can’t find anyone else experiencing this.

It's Autoplay and based on all the forums I read, no one can figure out how to turn it off. Autoplay was supposed to be a thing Apple thought people wanted, but it's really annoying if there is no option to turn it off. I had to turn off my bluetooth completely, and just use speakerphone for car directions and phone calls.

So far, the only 'work around' is to add a "silent track"of music play next on your Apple Music, or like me, turn off bluetooth completely. Click here for article and link: https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/10/silent-10-minute-song-itunes-car-stereo-trick/

Solution: If all of us speak up, Apple will fix the problem. Go to Apple Feedback link and request a fix by allowing us to turn OFF autoplay. (This is the direct link to request a fix from Apple.). Apple really does listen!

My disappointing "Auto-play on Music App" experience: I tried literally everything to turn off auto-play, spent (no kidding) hours researching and trying different "work arounds." I sent pleading e-mails asking Apple to give us a "Turn Off Auto Play" option via https://www.apple.com/feedback/ (which is the official place to send requests to Apple.)

No solution.

In a "scorched earth" attempt to fix the problem, I finally just cancelled my Apple Music subscription, (and sent an explanatory e-mail to Apple Feedback, stating that as a result, I would no longer pay $$$ for an Apple Music subscription until they fixed the problem.

The result? No more Auto Play! (Yaaaaaayyyy! Snoopy Happy Dance!)

Downside: It was a Pyrrhic victory since I now have to load music onto my phone. However, having music & podcasts automatically blast into whichever bluetooth device is connected was driving me nuts, and was really embarrassing during business calls/events.

This has been an issue for so long that I'm sure Apple doesn't care, as per their dropping stock. However, I personally called into Tech support and while she was very nice, there is no plan to pay attention to these forums or their customers.

So, here's my best work around after multiple attempts to get this issue under control on my work provided iPhone 8 the one that finally stopped the madness is to go into Settings-->General-->AirPlay & Handoff-->and toggle everything off (Transfer to HomePod=off, Handoff=off, Automatically AirPlay to TVs=Never). Then (because this phone is specifically for work and I don't listen to music on it) I also went into Settings-->Music--> and turned off everything. Then I deleted the iTunes app. It's a shame that it has to be this way but I can't have music (U2 - Apple's default band) taking over during or at the end of every conference call.

Good luck. Looking for my next phone company.

The workaround I relied on last time this happened works so well I didn’t even realize the bug was back until I happened to see the music app playing yesterday on my phone. It’s a ten minutes of silence “song” that is listed first alphabetically so that it will auto play. You can find and download it on Apple Music. It’s called Aaaaa very good song. It’s the only workaround to stop blasting music if you don’t want to delete the app. Not ideal and won’t address the battery drain, but it works great. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/itunes-download-chart-a-very-good-song-samir-mezrahi-iphone-apple-music-a7892286.html%3famp

Just to be clear. We are only going to pretend to delete the app.

If your Music app is on your homescreen you'll immediately be prompted with the message that all synchronised music and purchases will be deleted from your device. As soon as anyone sees this prompt, press CANCEL. Do not actually delete the app ! Remember, we are just pretending to delete.

If you have your Music App on any other screen than your homescreen you'll get three options:

  1. Delete App
  2. Remove from Homescreen
  3. Cancel

If you see this option, press Delete App. THEN you'll get the previously mentioned prompt "that all synchronised music and purchases will be deleted from your device'. Press Cancel and you are done.

No more terror from your Apple Music App !

(At least, this works for me on my iPhone X, running the latest iOS version.)

This fix takes less than 5 seconds to implement.

Hope this works for everyone !

My problem was resolved with the iso 13.3 update.

I use AirPods during the day and have never had a problem with them coming on by themselves, though I constantly have to turn Siri’s voice level down. I wear wired/corded earbuds connected to my iPhone X when I go to bed at night; that was where I was having the problem with my ‘last played,’ which was usually a book from my Audible app, turning on by itself. The volume didn’t change but it woke me up nonetheless. I did remove, reinstall and followed-up w/Audible but the problem wasn’t coming from their app.

Good luck. Perhaps this latest update will fix your problem.

This has been happening to me also only on my iPhone 8 that was provided by my employer. I use a wireless headset all day and after every call I'm on ends, there's U2 playing in my ear again. U2 is the only album loaded in Music by Apple and I don't use this phone for personal calls so I don't have anything else on there for it to play.

And when I open the background apps Music isn't open there either but the music is still playing in my ear via the headset. I actually have to open the Music and then kill it to make it stop playing...until the next call I have ends.

I am not having this issue on my personal iPhone X and it is on the same iOS version 13.3.1. I have reported the issue to Apple and I would suggest you do as well via their Feedback site at: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Version 13.3.1 isn't listed in the options so I put it in the comments (I did select 13.3 from the dropdown). Apple contacted me and escalated to a Senior adviser who did some troubleshooting with me and opened a case. She is going to do some further research and contact me in a few days. She said their notes say that "music may launch automatically when using bluetooth" but even she thought it was weird that it's random and that the note is even worded that way.

Hope this helps!

I am not using bluetooth, so this doesn't refer to my problem. The issue remains that the app would run by itself even while I was using other applications. I know it may be so that people can listen to music from other applications, but it shouldn't take over the sound of other applications. The only way I could find around this PROBLEM - was to delete the app. So the appletunes is no longer on my phone. Not what I would choose but it was the only way to keep my music from playing on it's own no matter what other application (or sound) I was running.
