Why does my Music start playing automatically when I plug in headphones?

Ever since the iOS 13 update, whenever I plug in my headphones to make a call my Music app automatically starts playing music. How do I get it to stop?

Ive installed the bug fix update and I’ve even turned off all settings for the Music app and unchecked all the music folders in the app. I’ve tried everything.

It’s really annoying. Any ideas? Can’t find anyone else experiencing this.

I just want to make some points for Apple to understand how deeply frustrating this problem is for all of us:

  • For each time I plug in my earbuds to prepare for a call, music starts up
  • Upsettingly, sometimes this happens just as I'm about to dial a number
  • Car use is the worst, driving down the road, getting ready to make a call is a terrible distraction
  • Keep in mind, this is a SAFETY issue too (that's why I'm using earbuds)
  • Yes, it is a SAFETY problem
  • Only times I plug in earbuds will be to make calls or listen to music, admittedly
  • Understandably, we all recognize the problem, Apple, why can't you?
  • All of the time, this is how frequently it happens - ALL OF THE TIME
  • Possibly this is a convenience feature, but it is really an "inconvenience" issue too!
  • Please fix this APPLE!
  • Let's all make as much noise as we can about this!
  • Ending this problem would make me very happy

That's all I have to say in making my points. Does everyone get these points?

Really I don't remember, I did a lot of things to resolve this issue:

  1. Settings/General/Background App Refresh/ Music disabled
  2. Siri disabled
  3. Settings/Music/Motion Off
  4. I did something with Car Play, this is because when I have the Navigation running the music was playing !

So far I don't have this issue again, but who knows.

That's all I remember, now I installed 14.1 and have other issues :(

Just to be clear. We are only going to pretend to delete the app.

If your Music app is on your homescreen you'll immediately be prompted with the message that all synchronised music and purchases will be deleted from your device. As soon as anyone sees this prompt, press CANCEL. Do not actually delete the app ! Remember, we are just pretending to delete.

If you have your Music App on any other screen than your homescreen you'll get three options:

  1. Delete App
  2. Remove from Homescreen
  3. Cancel

If you see this option, press Delete App. THEN you'll get the previously mentioned prompt "that all synchronised music and purchases will be deleted from your device'. Press Cancel and you are done.

No more terror from your Apple Music App !

(At least, this works for me on my iPhone X, running the latest iOS version.)

This fix takes less than 5 seconds to implement.

Hope this works for everyone !

I have done on my own everything that is listed in this forum on an Apple iPad Air Generation 4. I find it unconscionable that Apple and Bose are ignoring the good people in this forum who chase and use their products. Bose was another word for quality a decade ago and in deeper past. The Bose Exec Leadership rushed these products 700 and QC 35 QC, Spirt, Sleep, etc. and more through conception, design, build and implementation to sales to prevent the market grab Sony has manage to execute.

I have two latest Sony headphones 3 and 4 to series. It is like this in my opinion:

  • Bose for noise canceling but only the technology because the ear cups on 700 are too small. Wicked sells replacement ear cups for 700 that improve them immensely.
    • This is because they are built for industrial design prizes not much else.
    • Bose are very durable.
  • Sony for music because well designed ear cups and nearly as good technology, but not, besides they are very fragile

Good luck everyone.

This is what you should see if you've activated it correctly. What it telling you is that when your IPhone connects to a selected Bluetooth device it will create an exception in a particular action. In this case you're looking to modify what it does automatically with Music. So having selected the Play/Pause instruction, that's what it will do - it will open your Music (just as it does now), which is the Play part of the instruction, but will pause it, which is the Pause part of the instruction.

Twenty-two pages of complaints about this problem and it is still unresolved. The "solutions" often cited will not fix the problem. For me, the problem occurs when the phone is streaming a podcast or radio using cellular (in my case, 4G/LTE). If this signal is interrupted, locally stored music plays. This happens in my car, with Bluetooth headphones, and with Apple wired ear buds. In settings, "background refresh" is off. "Siri and Search" is off. "Handoff" is off. The music application is closed. The "next up" feature in Music is disabled.

I've concluded that the problem is Control Center. If you listen to a playlist on Music and then close the Music application, the Control Center music player still shows the song. If you click on the play arrow, the music will start even when the application is closed. This is somehow happening when the cellular signal is lost, regardless if the screen is locked. Allow users to remove the player feature from Control Center and (I betcha) the problem will go away.

I have spent a small fortune over the years on Apple products and I love them. But Apple's biggest problem is its tendency to play dumb when there's an obvious bug. Eventually it gets fixed, but not in this case. This is such an irritating problem there's a huge reputational cost to pretending it doesn't exist.

I don’t have AirPods or use wireless earbuds and it still will do it when I connect to my car. It will even happen without being connected to anything, the music app will override Spotify and I can’t listen to anything without restarting my phone. I gave up and deleted the app, it still does it from time to time despite not having the music app. My phone will have the player window show in the notification center and when I tap it to find the source, I’m told to download the music app again.

I have been googling to try to find the answer to this as well. Same issues as others, it's auto-playing the Music App, and Audible. It happens in my car too, someone on another page is claiming Option #3 from this helped:

I'm testing it now. Fingers crossed it works. SUCH an annoying issue.

I have the same issue except I do not have a headphone near by, and I suspected it was a bluetooth speaker nearby got connected and started my iTune music in a middle of a song. The really annoying part was that I was teaching a yoga class, with the meditation app playing sounds, and the iTune music turns on abruptly, I checked there was no iTune app running or anything. I turned off all other apps, restarted my meditation app, same problem happened again.

Why does my Music start playing automatically when I plug in headphones?
