#images not working on cellular after iOS 13 update

I have an iPhone 7 and just updated it - among other horrible problems, I cannot figure out how to get my gifs to send in messages. If I am on wifi, they work, if not, I get a message saying "Could Not Share Image. The internet connection appears to be offline". Old suggestions say to go to Cellular and turn on Hashtagimages, but that is not an option in my cellular settings.

I have the newest update 13.1.2, I have MMS Messaging turned on and my #images still does not work on cellular. I have reset my network settings and all settings. Nothing is working. Is this happening to anyone else with the newest iOS update?

I am also having the same problem. When I look under cellular hastagimages is not even there.

When I called Apple Support they told me to do the newest update hoping it would fix the problem. It has not.

I too have reset network settings, and reset all setting and nothing worked.

I tried everything I found on the internet and nothing has fixed the problem.

glad the #images function works on wifi but seriously don’t understand why Apple can’t tell me how to fix the issue. My kids have the newest IOS too and they do not have the same issue.

Very frustrating!

Hi everyone, prepare yourselves for a lengthy response.

This is certainly a software bug that is creating this issue. I remember early on, probably iOS 10, I turned the “hashtagimages” toggle off in Settings > Cellular to prevent reaching data limits. Though as I no longer have data limits, every other possible app that has a toggle to use data can. Apple removed this app from the cellular page and no longer allows it to have a toggle. This is the main issue that needs to be addressed. Though I am not certain if anyone else remembers turning this feature off (when it was an option) before updating, but this has been happening to me for the past few iOS versions.

I have tested turning off the app toggles, removing them, and later reinstalling them. Apps will reinstall and remain with the preexisting option. If it was off when you deleted it, that is how it will show up once reinstalled.

I also tested creating both iCloud and Mac backups. Restoring from each keeps the preexisting data/info and will remain with this bug. Though setting your device up as new will allow this feature to work as normal. The only problem with that is that you will lose some data info in the process. Personally I do not want to lose my messages, so I have opted to stick through this and hope Apple will soon patch this bug.

The only way to make this known to Apple is if we all take a few minutes to report this to Apple feedback. https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Apple does read the feedback, so if we all report this, then Apple will fix this issue sooner.

I also beta test the latest iOS software and must report bugs/glitches, and I can confirm that if a bug is widely reported, Apple may/may not contact you directly, but they will address the problem. As of now, this bug remains in iOS 13.3 and I will keep everyone else that does not beta test up to date when/if this problem is resolved.

Please remember to post your problems to Apple via the feedback page, as this is the best chance to quickly get this problem resolved! https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Hope this helps everyone! Take care :)

So this is totally crazy, but I found this on another site and it worked (at least for me), so here is what I did:

  1. Go to iMessage and turn off #images
  2. Go to Settings - General - Language & Region ... and change the region from United States to something else.
  3. Hard reset the phone
  4. Go to Settings - General - Language & Region ... and change the region to United States.
  5. Go to iMessage and turn on #images

For whatever reason that seemed to work for me and I can access #images using my cellular (not connected to wifi)

This is what was relayed to me by an Apple employee. This is not my “fix”.

  • Make sure the device is fully up to date. If it is, power off the device and power it back on and test.
  • Is this happening on Wi-Fi, Cellular data, or both?
    • If only happening while on Wi-Fi, check to see if  "Low Data Mode" is enabled under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. If enabled, disable and test.

If the issue continues at this point, we'll need to get you (the customer) to call in to AppleCare so we can dig in a little deeper.

I’ve noticed your provider makes a difference. AT&T allows their iPhone users more options than Verizon iPhone users. This might be the cause of the problem. For example, AT&T allows the individual to turn off caller ID in their settings but Verizon does not give you that option unless you call them and have them make the switch. Just a thought.

I thought I was the only one with this issue. There used to be a setting in cellular that allowed you to turn this function off. I did that while on vacation and did not turn it back on before the new upgrade. Now the #images icon is gone in cellular and no where to turn the cellular function on. I upgraded to the new Pro Max thinking it would restore but I used my backup from the X and nothing. It is a software issue that is hidden and no where to find settings. Very frustrating but not a deal breaker. There are other gifs you can use but I think we al just want this function to work. Come on Apple, help us out!

I’m having the same issue. Hashtag images is not in my list of cellular data options either. I’ve also tried all these suggestions. I have Verizon, Verizon says it’s an Apple issue. Apple of course says it’s a Verizon issue (I’ve talked to two people at Apple, one tried different things the 2nd would try nothing and turned it back to Verizon. It works great if I have WiFi. But not at all if I don’t.

We have two phones on the house, the strings are identical. Images works on one with no WiFi but not the other.

it would be nice if Apple would join these forums and see what’s going on and what needs to be fixed.

It's definitely Apple. I have AT&T and having the exact same issue. It *&^%$ sucks! Apple needs to get this together - spending hundreds on a phone and having these teeny things happen ****** me off. At least if it were something major, I'd KNOW they were working on it, but little stuff seems ignored. *enter imaginary angry gif from #images here*

Its happening to me too! I think in an older iOS (device & backup) I had turned off #images in the hopes it would save data usage. Now, it would seem that Apple has done away with the option to toggle that setting which would lead one to think that the default would be “on”. However, I was thinking that since I restored my new iPhone from backup, the backup would be what is holding my choice of having that setting set to “off”. Problem is, there doesn’t seem to be the option or choice anymore with iOS13, 13.1, 13.1.1, 13.1.2. I’m not sure what the FIX was that is supposedly in iOS 13.1.2.

I am hoping Apple will put back the option to toggle #images under cellular in the future because this is really irritating a lot of customers! Plus, we should NOT have to rebuild our settings on every device from scratch for this one tiny, setting.

Come on Apple!!!

katdk03 yeah when I had 13.1.2 mine actually worked no matter if I was on WiFi or cellular then I did the update to 13.1.3 really only because I hate having that little 1 icon over my settings app and that’s when I lost it. Then after doing everything they have recommended online and even talking to someone who works for the Apple store the only response I got was “hmmm well it should be working” I’m really starting to think that they don’t know how to fix the problem at all
