Update AppleID Settings - macOS Catalina

After installing Catalina, it asks me to update my Apple ID settings. I put in my password, and then it asks for my Mac password, which I give it. Then after a few minutes the message pops back up again. Happens on both my Macbook and iMac.

Logging in and out didn't help on my MacBook, there is too much to delete/re-add for me to want to try it on my iMac.

Had the same problem. in my case it had to do with saving my keychain to iCloud. Click on System Settings, then Apple ID at the top then choose iCloud. It will show what is using iCloud scroll down and choose Keychain. you may have to enter your Apple ID and your computer password a couple times. keep on following the prompts.

I just updated to MacOS Catalina version 10.15 (19A583) and it doesn't allow for the Apple ID to be updated. Obviously we are all entering the correct User IDs and Passwords or we couldn't add comments here. This also happend on my iPad Mini under the new iOS 13. Seems like Apple needs to address this as its happening to multible people on multible devices. It also did not authenticate by "code" to other Apple devices as another user pointed out with his macbook.

UPDATE: definitely has to do with the keychain.

Follow these directions from Michael Keenan...

Go to: "System Settings, then Apple ID at the top, then choose iCloud. It will show what is using iCloud scroll down and choose Keychain. you may have to enter your Apple ID and your computer password a couple times". Continue to follow the prompts multiple times!!

Signing out of iCloud and back in corrected the issue for me. The turning on iCloud keychain sync did nothing for me. The log out and log in was a little time consuming in both directions, and I'm not a heavy iCloud user, but it did fix my issue. Don't freak out while it's resyncing, though. My MBP fan ran on high for a few minutes and as data streamed back in, contact names in Messages and elsewhere reappeared in batches.

It finally worked for me! I did what some others said worked for them:

• Went to appleid.apple.com in Safari on Mac and changed my ID password.

• It asked for my 6 digit code which appeared on my iPhone. I entered the code on my Mac

• I opened System Preferences on my Mac and clicked on the Apple ID logo. It asked for my password, and I entered my NEW one.

• I scrolled down and checked Keychain. It thought for awhile, then asked for my Mac passcode.

• I quit System Preferences, and then reopened it. Lo and behold, the warning sign on the Apple ID icon was finally gone!

I hope this helps someone who wasn't helped by some of the other suggestions.

Change your Mac password...

1) System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Change Password.

2) I do sync my Keychain via iCloud so I confirmed that the checkbox was ticked in AppleID->iCloud.

3) Go back to AppleID click on the warning, enter iCloud Password. If/when prompted enter your new computer password.

4) Watch the red dot disappear!!!

5) If you want (I did) now you can change your computer password back to what it was.

This solution worked for me; have been good 5 days now. I did not want to logout of my iCloud account at any cost...

By any chance do you have multiple Macs logged in with the same iCloud account, and different computer login passwords?

I had the same problem with the prompts. What fixed it for me was to log on to appleid.com. It sent a verifcation to allow access to my apple id. Accepted the prompt and then logged out of appleid.com. Went back to the iCloud setting on the mac, and ticked the Keychain box. Entered the appleid password and then the computer password. The prompt disappeared and has not came back even after multiple reboots. Two different accounts were doing the same thing and this fixed it on both.

Same problem and same solution here: password changed and all works fine.

My iCloud password was 2 years old and Catalina asked me to review the security of my iCloud account (or something similar, I use macOS in Spanish), so I did it.

Just go to: System settings / Apple ID / password and security / Change password

Don't forget to update the password in your iPhone/iPad/watch....

A corrupt Keychain can prevent multiple services from loggin in, including iCloud.

Here is a way to figure out if your Keychain is the cause of not being able to login to iCloud.

1. Open your Console app (under Utilities)

2. In the Search field, type "Login"

3. Press the Clear button.

4. Try to login to your iCloud.

5. Note the streaming error messages. The message at the point the correct password failed to initiate a successful login may look something like this:

**Error Domain=com.apple.accounts Code=13 UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=<private>, NSUnderlyingError=0x7f*******c10 {Error Domain=com.apple.accounts.keychain Code=-25295}}}}**

Break down the error codes:

**Error Domain=com.apple.accounts Code=13**

This code can be linked to Keychain errors with a simple Google search

**Error Domain=com.apple.accounts.keychain Code=-25295**

This error code (and many others) can be nterpreted at this link:

https://krypted.com/lists/comprehensive-list-of-mac-os-x-error-codes/

In this case, 25295 is interpreted by pressing Command F and searcing "25295". The search locates the following code:

Keychain Manager error codes

errKCInvalidKeychain = -25295

All indications are that the Keychain is corrupt, blocking services from logging in. In fact, by searching your own Apple ID in the keychain to locate login keys, you might try deleting Public keys. In doing so, MacOS will fail to delete any key that is corrupt.

SOLUTION:

I found the solution is at this link:

How to back up your iCloud Keychain

https://eclecticlight.co/2019/09/05/how-to-back-up-your-icloud-keychain/

If you backup your MacOS device, your Keychain is also backed up. The article describes how to ensure your iCloud keychain items are also included in any local backup, and in doing so, it also describes how to restore your Keychain. Your Keychain is located in a file within your Library at ~/Library/Keychains. In finder, you need to select GO at the top menu (there's a way to unhide the "Go" tab... I don't remember offhand, but it is easy to find). Library is under the GO tab. This being said, this folder is also backed up to Time Machine or any duplicate of your MacOS device. Follow the instructions in the link to restore the ~/Library/Keychains folder to your MacOS device. I restarted my MacBook Pro, at this point, and for the first time in a couple of weeks, was able to login to all services.

Problem solved!

Hi Michael! This was the solution to my problem!

  • iCloud Keychain was not ticked on my MacBook Pro 2017 after updating to Catalina
  • Given that the solution was to confirm my identity using another device (entering my iPhone's Passcode on my Mac to confirm my identity), this makes sense to me - but I've been wrong before, once or twice... a day for 50 years!

If this is the case, then the UX of this process needs improvement, obviously. How many people would think to look at the status of their iCloud Keychain when faced with this behaviour? The way it currently works causes you to think something has broken or at the very least is not working (eg: iCloud is too busy, etc).

Thank-you for your post!

Update: I finally got past this on both devices. It required changing password from the appleid website, restarting my iPhone so I got the same notification in settings there, logging in with new password on iPhone, going back to both Mac's individualy, following the Apple ID and device password prompts as before and now finally got a prompt for the lock pin for my iPhone finally satisfying the update Apple ID settings dilemma.

Surely this would have come up in testing since I was affected 100% on multiple current model Macs

Hey folks,

Just got off of the phone with Apple support. The tech told me to not reset the password; but, to log off out iCloud on the Mac......and re login.

This worked for me, including fixing the Keychain issue. However, it did force me to re-sync iCloud data. This includes my 26K+ photo library. It’s uploading now over a 1GB connection. I don’t think it’s actually reuploading.....but more resyncing. The tech assured me that there will be no duplicates.

Still having problems updating Xcode.....but that’s it.

I had the AppleID / Keychain issue on my 13" MacBook Pro Touch Bar and tried at least 20-times to enter my credentials. Finally, I opened Safari and logged into iCloud.com website from Safari. Once I did that, then the computer prompted me to Touch ID to authenticate to the iCloud website. Then FINALLY after that it prompted me for my iPhone password. I had to enter the iPhone password twice, then it finally worked. This 13" MacBook Pro appears to be good to go. Your milage may vary, but it worked for me.

You can Sign Out in the Apple ID panel and eventually after several housekeeping questions (Find my Mac, etc) you'll be prompted to sign in, so, you Sign in. During the sign in process the system will ask you for the Apple ID, Apple ID password, Mac password, and your iPhone unlock code (if you set up you phone to unlock your Mac, I guess -- not sure why). Worked for me. (The Keychain "fix" didn't)
