Update AppleID Settings - macOS Catalina

After installing Catalina, it asks me to update my Apple ID settings. I put in my password, and then it asks for my Mac password, which I give it. Then after a few minutes the message pops back up again. Happens on both my Macbook and iMac.

Logging in and out didn't help on my MacBook, there is too much to delete/re-add for me to want to try it on my iMac.

Had the same problem. in my case it had to do with saving my keychain to iCloud. Click on System Settings, then Apple ID at the top then choose iCloud. It will show what is using iCloud scroll down and choose Keychain. you may have to enter your Apple ID and your computer password a couple times. keep on following the prompts.

The hint with the keychain didn't work for me, since it was ticked on already, and toggling it, had no effect. I had really to sign-off with my AppleID, delete the local replicas from an iCloud, and re-assign my MacBook Pro again to my AppleID.

The effect now is, that the MacBook now is treated as a new device added to my AppleID, and I have to confirm now every new login to, iTunes, Password, keychain entry, etc.

Hope this helps, in case the keychain advice is not working.

Ok I solved this problem on 3 different Mac's I upgraded to Catalina and was having this problem. Basically you need to completely sign out of iCloud account, reboot, and then sign back in. The steps below are how I fixed:

1) Boot into safe mode (by holding down shift key after you power on)

2) Login and go to Preferences, AppleID, Overview.

3) If you get "Update AppleID Settings" then try signing into iCloud and Desktop again.

4) If the "Update AppleID Settings" message comes back again, then click SignOut button.

5) Choose the options to Keep Copy/Delete of iCloud data.

6) After you are signed out, shut down and reboot in Normal mode.

7) Go back to Preferences, AppleID, Overview and sign back into your iCloud account.

Had to log out (fully) and back in to iCloud.

After this it finally worked. Tried changing passwords and all that multiple times.

I also have several macs at home.

Tip for when you’re logging out of cloud:

When asked to create a copy of iCloud docs, hit yes if needed BUT - make sure that in your Home folder, you do not already have a folder named “icloud Drive(archive)” if you do, make sure you delete the old folder with that name FIRST or the log out process never finishes!

Also note, I did not try the changing Mac password method. So try that first.

I hate to weigh in in the middle of the discussion, but I had the worst of the symptoms described in this forum: nothing worked at all, even signing out of my account and signing back in.

With Apple Support on the line, we created a new user account with administrator status, and, lo, it worked.

The Apple support person suggested I erase and re-instal the entire system. I agreed with him; I could do it, because it's all backed up.

I also agreed that I should not just restore application configurations from Time Machine, so I didn't. After re-installing Catalina, software configuration was an irritant for the first hour or so, but for the past day, all has been working smoothly.

Just as a confirmation on my post, my wife had the same problem too. Her keychain is activated by entering the apple id and password and iPhone pin at first try. I checked her iPhone and my guess was right. Her keychain was off on her iPhone. I have no issue after activating the keychain on my mac. So try these steps. It doesn’t hurt your data or settings:

1 - turn off the keychain on your iPhone and iPad and keep the autofill data locally ( it asks when you turn it off)

2 - check the keychain on your macOS. It asks about your appleid, local password, and iPhone pin.

3 - turn on the keychain on your iPhone and iPad when the keychain on your mac is remained checked.

it solved the problem for me and there is no more appleid popup!!!!

Okay, here's how I had to solve it on one of my Macs (on the other two, this solved it: "Click on System Settings, then Apple ID at the top then choose iCloud. It will show what is using iCloud scroll down and choose Keychain. you may have to enter your Apple ID and your computer password a couple times. keep on following the prompts.")

On my MacBook Pro this did NOT solve it, but what ended up fixing the problem is I had to open and log into Music, Podcasts, Photos, iBooks, News, and Apple TV ... then the problem went away! I think by splitting up iTunes it introduced some sort of Keychain bug, but logging into all the new sub-apps seemed to fix it on my MacBook.

The update doesn't fix the issue. I installed it a few hours ago and I'm still getting the endless loop. This is incredibly annoying... how do you push an update to solve the problem and it doesn't even solve it? Is the QA and UAT so minimal that it doesn't even verify the issue is resolved? Someone please help, and don't tell me to log out/in of my Apple ID or rest my password, we all know that doesn't work and it doesn't solve the problem!

Correction:

System Preferences --> Apple ID --> Overview --> Sing Out

It might have solved. After installing the update I was in continuous loop. Once I logged out of iCloud completely (in System Preferences --> Apple ID --> Overview --> Sing Out), and logged in again it took sometime to connect everything and keychain also got enabled (at last).

I might be lucky... but try that, it might work, if not let us know. Thanks.

I can't logout of my stuff cause then it wipes my stuff I have saved. So this option isn't a choice because then I have to readd cards and stuff. I did just put in an update for Catalina. I will try and restart but I'm still in this loop. But what's interesting I can still do stuff like make changes even though it's asking to sign in. But also my Apple TV has this same issue. I did sign out and resign in and it fixed it for a while but then I noticed it was back a few days ago. The One ID setup is broken clearly.

So got an update. I just kept doing it till it asked me what’s my pin I use on my iPhone. It took like 6 or more relogging in and I noticed it started unchecking my keychain as well which was weird cause before this I was using it often and it would update across my devices. Anyway I THINK, fingers crossed, it’s fixed. Now I just need to resolve whatever is going on with my Apple TV 4K in my bedroom and TV room.

Here's what worked for me. YMMV. Apparently when i tried logging out of my iCloud account. it wasn't doing a clean logout even though it let me log out. what finally worked, was before i logged out of iCloud, I deselected every entry in the "apps on this Mac using iCloud". Once i unselected everything, I logged out and then back in. This time it asked me for the unlock code on my iPad, and then automatically reselected all the apps that I had deselected. So far it seems to have resolved my problem.
