Hotspot connects but no internet

iPhone 8 13.1.2 - my hotspot doesn’t have internet even though I do actually have LTE or it is connected to WiFi. My PC will connect to hotspot, but has no internet. I can use my phone to surf the web fine.

I have reset network settings twice, turned cellular data off/on, no cellular updates or iPhone updates are available.

This worked perfectly prior to update to 13.1.3.

Here’s the simple fix that worked for me:

  1. Disconnect internet-seeking device from iPhone
  2. Turn hotspot off
  3. Change iPhone name
  4. Change hotspot password
  5. Turn hotspot back on
  6. Reconnect internet-seeking device to iPhone via new iPhone name and password on Wifi networks list

It seems as though the old network info (iPhone name and password to connect) will get you to connecting with the iPhone but not onward to the internet. When the iPhone is renamed and a “new” WiFi connection is learned, all seems to play well. Likely a security setting issue with carrying an old pass key forward into an updated iOS.

I work in tech support, & have seen nothing but problems with the 13+ iOS updates. I have few people that report the same thing as you, where I fix the issue with what I've posted previously, only to have the issue persist after some time (usually a day or two).

I really wish Apple would get their **** together with the 13+ ver of iOS.

All I can tell you is that I do not know waht the resolution is (other than getting an Android), but to put a bandaid on it you can use;

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

That will at the least make it work until it doesn't again.... :/

Apple IPhone 7 - IOS 13.2.3

Roku TV device and WIndows 7 Pro PC connect to IPhone hotspot but do not connect to internet as above issue. Have attempted the fix above identified by Alpha_DumDum with no resolution.

Anyone have any further ideas. An IPad Air connects to the hotspot and internet without any issue. Is this a bug and if so, how come there are not more people raising the issue?

I have the answer!!! YAY! I was having the same issue, and I tried SO many things, and AT&T wanted me to do a system reinstall. No way! About a month ago, I got my new iPod to play tunes for my party. When I setup my iPod, I turned on this neat little feature “Allow Calls on Other Devices”, so I could take a call on my iPod that was connected to my iPhone, so I grab a call on whichever was closer. However, little did I know, it would cause issues with my Personal Hotspot. I just now turned off “Allow Calls on Other Devices” (also in Settings > Cellular) and Personal Hotspot works!

If you have “Allow Calls on Other Devices” (also in Settings > Cellular) turned on, try turning it off, and then use Personal Hotspot. For some reason, leaving this "Allow Calls on Other Devices" turned on was restricting my Personal Hotspot from providing full access to the internet on my devices, where only a couple websites worked on my PC, and nothing worked on my tablet.

Try this !! Change your mobile network connection to 3G when you start sharing your hotspot then later change it to the LTE. I don’t have an explanation for this but I think it’s a problem with Apple and the LTE band. it’s like this. while Personal Hotspot is on go to :

1.Mobile data

2 mobile data options

3 voice and data and chose 3G

when the other device or internet searching device connects you can go back to the same place and change back to LTE maybe for faster internet connection.

Change settings under cellular/Cellular data Options/Voice and data from LTE to 3G.

That will fix all of your issues.

Edit* You will find that LTE does work under a VPN type browser such as TOR, but will not connect with your regular browsers though. Just change to 3G and you'll all be fine. I am still trying to figure out why this is though.

My bet would not be on OSX. I have multiple users all on Win7/Win10 that have the same issue. If you can look at the network setting in OSX I'm also betting you'll find that you're getting a valid IPv6, but not IPv4. This is purly an iOS thing, I've found nothing that will keep it reliable for more than a few days then I ahve to have my users use ipconfig commands to get a valid IP.
