Not able to share screen after catalina update

Hello,

I just updated to Catalina a couple of days ago and since then I am not able to share my screen using any software including skype or gotomeeting.

My clients are simply not able to view my screen .They are just able to see the top menu.

Anyone else facing the same issue?

Thanks,

Adnan

This is what worked for me. It seems the issue is the way Catalina deals with System Preference > Privacy > Screen Recording.

  1. Open this dialog (it will probably be blank)
  2. Open your app and start a session then attempt to screen share
  3. The app should give you a notice that it needs permissions
  4. The app should show up in the dialog list
  5. Check the box
  6. You will need to restart said app (so do this before a real meeting)

Was able to add; Teams, Skype and Zoom this way.

For me i think the issue here isn't that the privacy isn't aloud (it is).

It's that I use multiple Chrome Profiles, and it's therefore freaking out this new Mac OS permission... I've allowed it for one profile but not for the others maybe?

It looks like I must have accepted permission on for "chrome", but in fact I've not accepted for all the profiles, and therefore non are allow screensharing.

I had similar issues with webex and it not showing up in the screen recording list. Although not quite intuitive, for me the fix was to open quicktime and select new recording (as I was trying to record something on my iPhone), at which time I got the prompt for Quicktime to be added to screen record permissions and subsequently I got the prompt for Webex as well, where previously webex was not in the list.

This worked, though there are no explanations or instructions. From another users:

I have found that with Teams and Webex inside Chrome that if I am running Full Screen mode, I am able to share the screen. If I switch to non-full-screen, then I cannot share screens. I wonder if this "resolves" the issue for other people. (You may still need to have the Security and Privacy setting added.)

I thought this was only a problem with screen sharing on MS Teams. Turns out that it is much more extensive, as the comments here indicate. Clearly, something in the application permissions changed with Catalina and this Security & Privacy setting is not sufficient to resolve the issue. I haven't found the application that is blocking it for me.

Possible Solution:

If you have a Logitech Unifying receiver or use the Logitech Control Center. Read below.

The latest update of Catalina (10.15.1) did not help. However I did notice that my keyboard was having problems, and it has a special driver. If you are using the Logitech Unifying receiver, and have the Logitech control center installed, update to the latest version. It captures all the keystrokes to work.

Updating The Logitech Control Center to version 3.9.10 allowed me to screen share again.

Same. Skype has updated twice in the past week and today I couldn't share. I was running Mojave, which doesn't have the screen recording option in privacy settings, but I got an alert in skype telling me to go set it... and so against my better judgement I upgraded to Catalina and the screen recording option is there. I enabled it for Skype (for business) and still get the same error message.

This leads me to believe that it's a Skype bug and not a OSX bug, but it could be a combination of both.

Figured out a workaround. Put Skype and/or Teams into full-screen mode and share the screen. Once sharing initiates, you can go back to a window and share to your heart's content. Not sure what is going on but the sharing permissions are definitely messed up if you try to share the screen while in a SFB or Teams window. All permissions are set per the earlier posts in this thread.

This isn't working for me! I've tried at least ten times, even rebooting the computer several times and the absolutely only way I can get it to work temporarily is if I have the security lock unlocked while I do the screensharing. Chrome then has to reboot (while the lock is unlocked) before my screen sharing works. And then it only works that one time.

Rebooting Chrome every time I need to share my screen in a meeting is not tenable. My job requires screen sharing several times a day.

So, it looks like you just have to close apps and open them till you find which one is causing the issue. For me it was Microsoft's "to do" app. Weird stuff. I do wonder who the culprit here is, Microsoft or Apple. It is odd that having another app open would cause the issue. I think that Apple is really dropping the ball on this release. This is something that pretty much all business users will need on the daily.

Im disappointed there has been no urgency to address from either side here since I am a "MS Teams" user, but since this is a MAC issue I feel Apple needs to push out a fix ASAP.

I actually had the issue after a Skype update while using Mojave. In Mojave there was no such privacy setting (for screen recording), so I updated to Catalina and, while the setting was there and I set it for Skype, it didn't solve the problem. Since the bug exists for other non-microsoft screen sharing applications, my guess is that it's a bug that Apple introduced to application developers when they provided info on their new privacy/security settings, and screen sharing applications thus carried this bug over to their applications. Regardless, I think it will require fixes by both Apple and Microsoft (and other screen sharing applications).

I joined the "office insider" program to get early releases of updates and got a skype update today. It still didn't fix this bug.

Thank you! We use Zoom at work and I was facilitating an online meeting yesterday. Nearly ruined the meeting when I learned that no one could see the documents that I was sharing on my screen. They could only see the desktop picture. I also have a screen capture app that hadn't worked since Catalina update. Your quick fix did the trick. Thanks so much for posting it.

We are seeing the same behaviour. Any time screen sharing in Skype for Business is attempted this error is returned:

"! Change your settings to allow desktop sharing. Go to the Privacy pane of Security & Privacy and enable Screen Recording for Skype for Business.'

However, in macOS 10.14 Mojave there is no "Screen Recording" in the Privacy pane in Security & Privacy preferences. It may be a key in a .plist .xml file. MS SfB should know this and behave accordingly.

I have the same issue, but in my case the problem is native Screensharing app from Apple.

I cannot start a screensharing session. The point is that I'm prompted to the Username/Password window (and it means that the connection is settled), but then the windows shakes, as if I use the wrong credentials. The point is that user and password are correct!

Anyone have the same problem? Any solution?
