Mac Mail on Mac keeps rearranging mailboxes randomly

Ever since I downloaded Catalina, my mailboxes keep rearranging themselves randomly on my laptop. It's not the end of the world, but very annoying

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.15

Rather than dragging and dropping the accounts in MacMail, go to

Click on the Apple Logo (top-left)

Choose 'System Preferences...'

Choose 'Internet Accounts'

For each account listed untick the 'Mail' option

Now turn them on in the order you want them to be shown.

So far they haven't changed order for me 🤞

My mailboxes are the same - GSuite mailboxes for a few of my different businesses. I can't believe that they are unaware on the global scale, it appears to be such a wide-spread issue and they act like they've heard about it for the first time.

I wonder if there is anything we all can do to MAKE them aware to the point that they finally do something about it...

I did the changes SpikyOrange suggested by the end of March (25th-28th) and it worked for me at first (12 gmail, 2 yahoo, 2 hotmail accounts), but little by little some accounts started changing places and now all the accounts are moving up and down randomly again.

It looks like Apple is doing as usual: denying the problem until they have a fix for it...

Thanks.

So basically the Appletoolbox article is telling us to do this for our Google accounts:

  1. Use much less safe app-specific-passwords (Which A. Google is going to get rid of, and B. is MUCH less secure than Oauth)
  2. Manually configure the mail server settings (bad idea)
  3. Because of this old tech method: NOT automatically also sync Google account based calendars and contacts (not an option for me)

It MIGHT fix the order of inboxes, but CERTAINLY messes up my Calendars and Contacts. That's worse.

So, thanks, but no thanks.

I guess I'll be asking Apple what the status is of my support request on Monday.

I am pleased to advise that my mailboxes are still in order after changing the settings as per my previous post (although security issues were raised, I decided to risk it!). I cannot comment further on your recent experiences, having been advised that this would be "nontechnical or off-topic" so will restrict myself to recommending a potentially insecure workaround.

OK, this is getting ridiculous! Like everyone else has said here - how difficult can this fix be? I'm seriously now looking at other email apps for the first time since I made the switch from Windows to Mac back in 2007. How can they say that it's not a big enough problem? Most people can't figure out how to log on to leave a comment, so they just wait for it to resolve itself especially if they find a thread like this online and expect that Apple is going to actually fix it. I'm exhausted by and frustrated with companies taking customers for granted. This is and should have been a simple tweak that could have been pushed out with any of the previous updates, but no... Apple has to get all witchy about things, as if they know what we really need as consumers. Incompetence has become the new normal people and it's a sad day when the little things start slipping through the cracks. Simply put - FIX IT ALREADY!

As Apple is clearly going nowhere with this stupid problem on Catalina.. I have two questions for my partners in inbox shuffle pain here:

  1. Has anybody already tested the mail app on MacOS 11 Big Sir Beta? If yes, is the problem fixed? (my hopes are MacOS11 fixes much more than it breaks)
  2. What is the minimal amount of (Google) accounts configured in the Catalina mail app, that already causes/has the mailbox shuffle issue? (obviously more than 1 account)(I might be able to offload some accounts to another mail app, yes bad solution, but better than having my inboxes dance around all the time)

Thanks!

I'm having this issue too. Its very inconvenient as I have 13 mailboxes and set their order of importance for workflow across 3 different Macs. When they're randomised it eats time rearranging them so I can work. So simple to fix, no need for it to happen. The quality control in Catalina absolutely sucks.

I'll make my comments on the Music app elsewhere....just why

@PaddyD, same here!

I am a freelance commercial photographer and run a couple more businesses, so all of the key email addresses that cannot be consolidated end up jumbled up in my Mail app a million times a day. I have missed important emails simply because my mind had been trained over the years to not pay attention to unimportant mailboxes at the bottom of the list and only keep an eye on the important few at the top - now it's an effing hot mess every single day 🤦‍♀️

This has been happening for well over a year now, how come Apple is still blind to this issue!?
