Mac Mail on Mac keeps rearranging mailboxes randomly

Ever since I downloaded Catalina, my mailboxes keep rearranging themselves randomly on my laptop. It's not the end of the world, but very annoying

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.15

Rather than dragging and dropping the accounts in MacMail, go to

Click on the Apple Logo (top-left)

Choose 'System Preferences...'

Choose 'Internet Accounts'

For each account listed untick the 'Mail' option

Now turn them on in the order you want them to be shown.

So far they haven't changed order for me 🤞

They "never look" but they do send replies like this:

Interesting to see "[Edited by Moderator]"

So Apple doesn't monitor discussions here, or provide help or advice, or note problems and issues. But they do "edit"!

Well, 6 months and several macOS updates later...

STILL NO FIX

I called Apple about 2 months ago about this one. Of course they had never heard of this and sent me down the tradition route of try safe mode, reinstall, etc..

Yesterday I finally got round to booting safe mode (keep shift held at boot till it displays safe mode in the top menu). I arranged my 11 mailboxes. At the end of the day closed the lid on my MacbookPro. This morning, still in safe mode, after the Macbook woke up again, all mailboxes shuffled again. Also the connection doctor offered to sort out stuff...

All my mailboxes are Google G Suite mailboxes, but under the hood, they are just IMAP mailboxes. It has to be something in the Mac's mail app. All my Macs do this (my MacbookPro, my 2014 Mac mini, my girlfriends Macbook Pro, and my brother's Macbook Pro). My iPhone (latest iOS) and iPad (latest iPadOS) do NOT show this behaviour.

Man this is frustrating. Like somebody running into your kitchen at night an rearranging the contents of your cupboards.

Think I will make time in a minute to call Apple again, and continue with them on solving this stupid issue.

Also we are not alone, there is another thread about this here, which started round the same time as this thread did:

Been having this problem since before Catalina, but in the last week it's gotten suddenly worse. It used to rearrange things when I restarted Mail (very rare - Mac and Mail run 24/7) - now it's doing it randomly when the Mac sleeps. So practically every morning and several times during the day I find one of my primary Gmail addresses down near the bottom of the list. Why that one? I have no idea - I have several other Gmail addresses which stay where they belong.

All very well if you only have a couple of email addresses, but I have THIRTY on my iMac (I'm a web designer - a lot of the addresses are admin accounts belonging to clients' domains) and about 20 of those on my MBP...so this isn't much fun.

I really wish Apple would fix this - it's very annoying.

Alright, I've submitted the feedback on the Mail app, but also realized how long we've all been b*tching about it and still no results, so I've just downloaded the Spark Email App by Readdle, it has 38K 5-star reviews, so I don't need to care whether or not Apple fixes their Mail app now 💁‍♀️
