NAS Access in Catalina issues

Since upgrading to Catalina my access to NAS shares is problematic.

I have a QNAP NAS unit, with APFS and SMB (1/2/3) enabled.

I can see the NAS in finder under 'Locations' but when I click on the NAS I get 'connection failed'. Using 'Connect As' does nothing at all.

I manage to connect using 'Connect to server' with the command: afp://NASNAME(AFP)._afpovertcp._tcp.local

It asks me which 'share' I want to connect and all works well.

If I then go back through finder to the same share I get the same 'connection failed' issue, even though the mounted share shows on my Desktop.

Any ideas please?

SPOILER ALERT: this is not a solution but a "working" WORKAROUND

My actual situation:

  • I'm able to access to my NAS (SMB shares) through finder left sidebar only after a reboot
  • I'm Always able to connect to my SMB shares by "command K"
  • my NAS implements SMB v3_2 protocol

My workaround (tested working after several working time or sleep):

  • reboot the mac
  • connect to NAS through sidebar network shortcut. This will mount shares on the desktop
  • drag the shares icons on your desktop on finder sidebar but in "favorite" section (as in attached picture)

Now, every time you need to access these shares use these links on favorite sections instead of the one in network.

This definitely demonstrates that is not a "protocol connection issue" but a Finder specific issue.

I had everything working fine and in the last few weeks the usual issues had started resurrecting themselves. Most noticeable when running daily backups to a NAS using Carbon Copy Cloner. On the advice above I switched off WiFi on the machine and have used Ethernet only. All back working fine... I have always had Ethernet as the highest in the list of network connections but it seems something to do with connecting via WiFi as well cause the issues with the NAS connection. All back to stable again for now at least

All,

Last week I have moved to Catalina 10.15.6. The first days, the connection with the Synology NAS worked OK. Also the TimeMachi ne share on te NAS worked OK, as it had been since beginning of july with the Bob Zelin fix under Catalina 10.15.5. This weekend however, the TM dreaded message re-appeared and TM started new initial backups again. I believe this started after a Norton 360 upgrade, but not sure. However, the dreaded TM message kept coming, also after switching off Norton 360.

I will try to re-apply Bob Zelin fix again, as this is probably lost by installing Catalina 10.15.6.

Will keep you guys posted.

Cheers,

Martin

Bob Zelin's trick did NOT work for me (Macbook Pro Nov 2019).

What did work was switching the WiFi Protocol on the router back to 802.11n.

It would be worthwhile to know what WiFi Protocol was used by those who have reported or confirmed the issue.

I have an open Apple ticket but officially this issue has not been acknowledged.

Instead Apple Tech Support advices to do a fresh install of Catalina which did not resolve the issue.

Others even had their motherboards replaced which likewise did not resolve the issue.

@Remulus, @Fly_PetitPrince

OSX release 10.15.6 fixed the problems with connecting NAS-shares.

However the problems with TimeMachine remained: after an initial TM backup, the following incremental backup failed, with the famous message. This appeared to be a problem with Norton 360. It was necessary to complete uninstall Norton, to get TM working again. Norton is completely silent about this and no hint on a solution. Very disappointing for a lifetime Norton customer, like me.

And we also, explicitly or implicitly accused Apple for the TM problem, which now appeared to be false.

Anyway, end good, all good.

@Rob-VB

Perhaps is helps if you setup your NAS on fixed-IP and reserve a fixed-IP address in your DHCP-server for the NAS (typically your internet modem).

And then declare this IP-address in Finder (Go server) and place the associated NAS shares in the Finder left column, or on the Desktop. Please see previous posts.

This worked for me.

Thanks Martin. I had already done that. If I reboot, it works for a short while but my work around is still working and doing the job. In fact, I copied the mounted folders back to Finder and they still work but clicking on the NAS in finder still doesn't connect. I am OK with that and all my Surveillance and backups have continued to work. I think there may be a bug within Finder.

Just updated to 10.15.6 on a MBP Pro 2019 13".

BEFORE update ( 10.15.5 ) , Time Machine to NAS repeatedly abd reproduceable did break and stop.

( so we took a USB disk to be sure ) .

After update, the TM Backup did run with issues => sounds like fixed.

Note:

we did not have and connection issues with NAS share before

what also has been fixed is the silly finder preview behaviour esp with NAS.

I still believe, network components running, DNS, gatway and DHCP might have an influence on the issues.

Is there anybody out there from germany with AVM products in the LAN running the bove mentioned that had the NAS synlogy connection issues?

Every day I check for a macOS update for Catalina hoping that this will be fixed. There were a few updates and now on macOS Catalina 10.15.6 I can get a connection, but cannot copy very much data to the Synology without a connection disconnect failure. This is really ruining my scheduled ChronoSync backups. After the connection disconnect Finder is unstable and I do need to quit all applications and attempt to reboot the Mac... I can't always get a clean reboot because of the instability.

I just found a temporary workaround for data transfer. I have a Parallels Windows VM and inside of it I am currently using Windows explorer to drag and copy a 319 GB bulk copy... a very large block of data. I'm about about and hour and a half into it with 7 hours to go. I hope this works because I feel like I'm walking a tightrope without a net. I'll report back when I know if it really worked.

OK, last update. The backup to Synology from a Windows VM under Parallels is a viable solution. The copy did pause but it is now at 81.6 GB with a time remaining of 6 hours. There are other things going on with the Synology so I'm comfortable that this workaround is viable. I am a bit disturbed that Windows is bailing me out of a macOS issue, but hey... I need to get this backed up and whatever it takes...

Aug 24, 2020 11:47 AM in response to TakomaFan

Final report... running a recursive diff of folders in the Mac file system via a Parallels VM against a Synology NAS. 319 GB (343,550,832,640 bytes). No differences reported so far. I believe that with a Parallels VM of Windows or Linux this is a valid test of backup of data to a NAS. No instability in Finder or the Mac at all, as Finder is not involved and the Mac apparently has not awareness of the VM connection to the NAS.

Not saying that I like it, but it is a workaround while we wait for Catalina to stabilize.

I have the same issue on Catalina 10.15.6 with Norton 360 and a WD EX2 Ultra NAS. Apple support said they do not provbide support for 3rd party NAS backups and to call the NAS vendor. WD has a workaround by mapping the MacBook to the NAS over smb. Has worked since I did that. I didn't change Norton.
