NAS Access in Catalina issues

Since upgrading to Catalina my access to NAS shares is problematic.

I have a QNAP NAS unit, with APFS and SMB (1/2/3) enabled.

I can see the NAS in finder under 'Locations' but when I click on the NAS I get 'connection failed'. Using 'Connect As' does nothing at all.

I manage to connect using 'Connect to server' with the command: afp://NASNAME(AFP)._afpovertcp._tcp.local

It asks me which 'share' I want to connect and all works well.

If I then go back through finder to the same share I get the same 'connection failed' issue, even though the mounted share shows on my Desktop.

Any ideas please?

SPOILER ALERT: this is not a solution but a "working" WORKAROUND

My actual situation:

  • I'm able to access to my NAS (SMB shares) through finder left sidebar only after a reboot
  • I'm Always able to connect to my SMB shares by "command K"
  • my NAS implements SMB v3_2 protocol

My workaround (tested working after several working time or sleep):

  • reboot the mac
  • connect to NAS through sidebar network shortcut. This will mount shares on the desktop
  • drag the shares icons on your desktop on finder sidebar but in "favorite" section (as in attached picture)

Now, every time you need to access these shares use these links on favorite sections instead of the one in network.

This definitely demonstrates that is not a "protocol connection issue" but a Finder specific issue.

A fix that seems to constantly make things start working (temporarily, until it breaks again of course) for me is to run this command from the terminal / shell prompt:

sudo killall NetAuthSysAgent

Many of us have been having SMB stability proble\ms for ages, and it's extremely frustrating. SMB file share access is a major part of most professional environments, and for Apple to have issues with it for years is just an embarrassment. If Apple can't write a functioning SMB client - and it's quite clear and obvious at this point that they lack that competence - they should just integrate SAMBA and be done with it.

It's not just NAS devices. Windows Server (2012, 2016, and 2019) shares are problematic as well. This is a joke. Get your act together, Apple.

Some positive feedback because for me the problem is fixed. Previously nothing worked and the NAS was basically not usable and Finder crashed every time I tried a connection. Also tried various workarounds from this forum but nothing was even close to stable.

Now with the latest upgrade from Catalina to version 10.15.6 and a QNAP TS-473 with firmware version QTS 4.4.3 onwards everything works like a charm. Like it did previously in Mojave.

I'm sad to hear others are still struggling.

For me it is working fine too.

The only problem I have is with Pages and Numbers. I can create a new document and save it to the network share. However, when I update the document I can't save it anymore (error "File can not be saved" or something). I used to have this problem last year, but it was solved to save as a single file. Alas this isn't working anymore. It make it impossible to work on a network share from Pages or Numbers.

All other programs I have (Word, Excel, Lightroom, PDF Expert, etc..) are working fine. So I assume it is a problem with Pages and Numbers itself.

I'm on the latest version of Catalina 10.15.7 and my 2014 Mac Mini still crashes when I access my Synology NAS. Oddly, my end of life 2012 Mac Mini, also running Catalina 10.15.7 has no issues, let alone crashes, accessing the same Synology NAS. When I say end of life, the 2012 Mini will not be supported for Big Sur. I'd rather have the Mac Mini that will be supported going forward work with the NAS.

Yeah, I am getting out of the Apple ecosystem. Way too much out of the user's control. The "just works" moniker seems to apply to Windows more and more. It's laughable how many workarounds I've had to set up (auto mounter, Finder add-ons, spaces add-ons, etc.), and soon those will probably no longer be "allowed" to work (already have to disable "SIP" just to run most of those add-ons nowadays!).

To boot, the rounded corner nature of everything gets old after a while... it just feels like all my windows waste space due to that design, vs. having normal right angle corners. And this goes for my iPad Pro and my iPhone too - all the curves (and the iPhone cutout) - they look pretty, but ultimately, it gets obvious it needs more margins all around to have everything curved.

My one other grievance - Apple barely has caught up with SMB as being the preferred standard, yet still no multi-channel (if that's the right name) transfer! How can this be the choice of "pros" if the limit is 10 Gbps (per user/per file)? When in Windows, you can aggregate links and actually get 20 Gbps (or even 30 or 40 I presume if you have enough ports) to your NAS.

Last month I wrote that Numbers and Pages were not working on a SMB share, while all my other programs had no problem.

It turns out it has something to do with a share added as a favourite in Finder (the solution to make SMB work in previous versions of Catalina). When I save from Numbers or Pages to a SMB share which isn't in favourites it works fine.
