Apple TV Plus content no longer plays in Dolby Vision

My TV and receiver are Dolby Vision capable, I know this for a fact because I can enable it manually through the Apple TV 4K, but I like to leave the video settings at 4K HDR. Up until a few weeks ago whenever I begin to play See, my TV used to automatically switch to Dolby Vision; however, it doesn't do this anymore and just plays the content in HDR. It seems to be an Apple TV+ plus issue, because when I when play Dolby Vision content through Netflix, my setup would automatically switch to Dolby Vision. Any thoughts?

I believe this might be a side-effect of the issue being discussed in this post where a lot of people had issues with the first few episodes of tv+ shows not displaying correctly in DV. Seems like Apple messed something up in their DV encoding, my guess they’re having to fix it and in the meantime reverting to HDR only. No doubt DV will be back as soon as they’ve fixed and re-rendered everything.

I don't know if it's related, but is anyone else getting either no picture or both no picture and no audio during the recaps that start each episode? Right now, I was playing For All Mankind episode 4 on my LG OLED, and the recap was just audio. Then I tried on my iPhone 11 Pro, and the recap was neither audio nor video. (I saw just the captions, which I have enabled.) When I tried a couple more times on my iPhone, both the audio and video played.

It has happened on other episodes and shows.

Wow so still no official response from Apple. I used to purchase apple products in part because of great customer support... seems to really be going downhill recently. They probably have SIRI running Atv+.

Also, it's amazing how so many people buy the latest tech like DV capable TVs and then don't even notice when things aren't working properly.

As I wrote earlier, I have exactly the same thing, LG C9 and neither 4K nor HDR nor Dolby Vision works on any film. I was waiting specially with the purchase to take advantage of the annual promotion and bought 2 iPads, one for myself and the other for a gift to enjoy maybe a week of good quality. I should now return the goods and request a refund because the products do not comply with the advertisement and description and I feel cheated. I have been a supporter of Apple for years but I will probably have to jump with it and change my habits. 3 weeks ago I submitted complaints to Apple support and until today no one answered me wisely in this matter but they pretend they don't know and what's going on as if only I had a problem with it

Well I just purchased a new vizio 4k TV with dolby vision and when I play apple tv plus content it isn't even in HDR 10 or dolby vision. However when I play my purchased 4k movies with the apple tv app it is in HDR. I know how to get apple's attention. We all need to cancel our subscription. I am going to cancel mine today. When they decide to acknowledge the problem and fix it I will come back but not until then.

I noticed the same thing. I think it's just an acknowledgment that the show is NOT in Dolby Vision, which we already knew.

I've talked to tech support 3 times and have gotten almost nowhere. They seem to acknowledge the problem but will not utter a word about a fix, etc. The latest tvOS software came out end of Oct, before Apple TV Plus started in the beginning of November when DV worked fine. So I can't see how this is a software issue on our end. This has to be the server, or something related. Apple broke it in a day, but I now fear there will be no fix or it's a long way off. I wish Apple would realize that keeping us in the dark is far worse with long term repercussions. It would be easier to tolerate with some substantial feedback from Apple, but that won't occur. This is the worst Apple fail I've seen in a very long time. There are workarounds for many of apple's bug, but not this one.

Earlier in the thread I shared a link to another discussion where several users noticed that DolbyVision Apple TV+ content was displaying incorrectly. I believe Apple have incorrectly encoded their content for DolbyVision and this is why they have pulled it for now. I expect it will be back once they have sorted out this issue but I agree an official comment would be good.

The reason I disagree is that when apple tv+ first debuted at the beginning of November all of the shows were correctly displaying in Dolby Vision, so the encoding was correct. Now only the previews and three shows, Dickinson, Snoopy in Space, and one of the other animated movies is in DV. It's really inexplicable and apple's silence isn't helping.

They might have displayed correctly for you, but they didn't for many others across a number of brands. Who knows what the issue was, but that many people were not imagining it! Even now there's still a DolbyVision trailer for 'See' in the Apple TV app which displays the same issues on my LG display. If you find the thread it includes photos of the issue so you can see for yourself.

You certainly could be right and I shouldn't assume that just because it initially worked for me, it initially worked for everyone. It's just so sad that apple isn't giving us any kind of information. I can't begin to imagine why apple would think that being silent is helpful in any way.

I still can't believe that rare decoding problems on specific devices would have made Apple disable Dolby Vision across all platforms and retroactively disable it on some shows - but NOT disable it on others. And also not disable it at all on "Morning Wars" (the Australian version of "The Morning Show"). And let's not forget that the video streams are still encoded in Dolby Vision - they're just not playing that way.

If there was a particular TV having issues with Dolby Vision then surely it would make more sense for Apple to suggest those users disable Dolby Vision on THEIR end while it gets investigated - not just turn it off for everyone.

No, I still think this is a workflow screw-up that somehow hasn't been escalated to the people who need to know about it yet.

It's not just on the Apple TV device. It doesn't work on the Apple TV app on other devices or TVs either. Mine won't even show the HDR flag anymore. But it doesn't matter to me anymore, I fixed the problem by canceling my subscription. I would encourage any monthly subscribers to do the same thing. Apple only listens to customers when it effects their bottom line.

Good I just commented on that news article. Hope it gets Apple's attention. Disney is actually even worse since they are tricking Tvs to display the Hdr flag but after someone did an analysis they discovered that it was not actually in HDR. So they are flat out lying to their customers by making people think they are getting HDR but it's SDR. This could even cause damage to some Tv's.
