New 16" MacBook Pro - Running Slow

Hi,

I just picked up a new MacBook Pro 16" (Base Model - 9th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, AMD 5300M, 512GB SSD) for my fiancee yesterday from the Apple Store.

I work with MacBook Pro's at my work (repair them, troubleshoot, run software installations and updates), with models ranging from early 2013 Pros to early 2019. However, when we set these up for new users, they are preloaded with a bunch of apps.

Setting up my fiancee's new laptop, we used the migration assistant from Windows to Mac, and moved over her files. When I rearranged them to make them easier for her to find, I noticed that the Mac itself was sluggish. Specifically in opening up different windows, it seemed as though they were stuttering when opening, not the smooth transition I am used to at work. I ran the most recent MacOS updates before proceeding and I'm thinking it has something to do with that? Has anyone else experienced any sluggishness on the most recent version of Catalina? We're still stuck in Mojave at work (can't update until we get all of our security apps up to 64-bit).

Thanks for any input!

Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Add Text button to include the report in your reply. How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

ALSO:

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the root of the problem.

My problem is fixed. Can’t tell you what we did. But my email was causing the problem. It was slow. Had to reboot all the time. Fan would come on. I thought it was computer. But I switched to outlook and kept apple mail closed. No issue. As soon as I opened apple mail the problem would start. Since I always keep all programs open I never isolated until I switched to outlook. I forgot what we did on phone with support but the problem is totally gone. Back to apple mail. No slowness. No fan on all the time. Computer fast as can be!!

Same problem as lyle. Brand new $2800 16" macbook pro and it feels like im running a 2003 macbook air. Tried a complete wipe and it didnt help.

Everything feels awful, for example if i have a fullscreen chrome window and drag the window to make it small/big very quickly it'll keep stuttering.

Seems like Apple messed up the hardware or OS. I dont know what else it could be. Very disappointed :(

Not going to bother running etrecheck as I did it once in the past and it came back fine. Theres nothing to check, especially if its happening with a fresh wipe.

I feel the same way. I am coming from a Nuc Canyon i7 with 32gb of ram and 2 970 EVO's in a raid 0. My nuc feels so much more responsive then this Macbook Pro. It's a beautiful machine but seems sluggish at times. At near 3200 with apple care I feel like it should be a lot more responsive. I thought possibly it was the disk encryption so I turned off but didn't really notice a change. My 2015 Macbook Pro which I handed down to an employee seems to run neck and neck with it. It's snappy but things like lightroom seem slow and uncompressing files wasn't very impressive.

Installed large update today and we did at the same time on the 2015 macbook pro and my new i9 took 45 minutes longer to install.

Within the return policy only had a couple days so hope to see some feedback here so I can make a good decision. Don't mind spending the money but want top performance.

I'm experiencing the same slowness. Even with no programs open, the transition between screens is not natural (not always). The scroll in a simple webpage is not natural, it is not continuous. Even the mouse getting moved on the screen, sometimes there is lag in the pointer. Checked always Activity Monitor and no issues neither with the RAM (even with everything I could open, I had 3GB free) nor with the CPU (far from 100%).

I'd to share the report generated using Etrecheck (all permissions granted) but I can't, I don't know hoy. Only images can be attached (and links, but I don't have a link to the report, it is on my Desktop iCloud and locally saved).

I restarted the compute in Safe Mode and it was awful. First of all, I checked if I did right and I did. Then, I tried to open Google Chrome but it took at least 20 seconds. After that, the computer fan started running a lot, like if the CPU computer was at 100% of the capacity (I couldn't check because Activity Monitor was disabled). Apart from that, I couldn't even write this post. I tried but I simply couldn't, not even with Safari. When I tried to login on the browser (both Chrome and Safari) it got blocked. It is not a password issue, I doubled checked the password because I copied and pasted (which was difficult as well because it took almost 30 seconds to open the text editor and no comments about copying and pasting ...). It got blocked because it got blocked, I could see the coloring circle which appears when an app doesn't work properly.

I don't like at all this behavior. What's happening??? Really bad experience with Safe Mode.

I'm thinking of returning the computer.

I have just bought the MBP 16" 32GB I9 8 core 2,3GHZ in order to upgrade from the 2,8GHZ MBP 2015 MID model.

I basically restored a backup from the MBP2015 to this computer and one of the things I find strange is that my Google Chrome browser seems sluggish... It is mostly pronounced when changing between tabs.... Sometimes it seems like forever changing tabs

The installation is a pretty fresh Catalina install with all upgrades.

And offcourse the sound popping is anoying...

Looking forward to a fix on the popping sound and hopefully the slugginesh...

Just want to say that same issue for me! Macbook Pro 16" noticeably worse than my 5 yr old Macbook Pro, despite using migration assistant so all the same settings/software/etc. Only difference then is my hardware (i.e. the new computer) and the new OS (was using High Sierra on my old MBP).

Sluggishness is most noticeable with Chrome (although it's variable) and loading the computer after restart.

Hoping someone else has figured out a solution! I don't use Apple Mail, so that's not the issue.

Glad you mail is working. I have about 12 email accounts and run a business. I don't have time for Dragging typing and seconds of delays.

Ive been using outlook so far and it has fixed my issue. Now I am wishing I got 2Tb instead of the 1 TB..

But still im not that impressed.. with this fully decked out 4k machine. seriously mail should not slow it down.

they need to do something about it for sure. I have not even attempted to open it again after 3-4 months of complete aggravation.

I got tired of the slower perfomance, and after spending hours and hours getting failed 10bit HEVC exports (excuse me MacOS, your telling me Compressor is using 135GB of RAM!), forcing me to have to use my 2015 MBP (uses only 4GB or RAM for Compressor), I gave up. I was working with Applecare, but they are not available due to the coronappocolypse, and I don't want to wait months just to have them make excuses as to why they can't resolve my issue. I bought a 16" i9 with 1TB storage for $2500 no tax from B&H to replace it...hopefully I can get close to what. paid for my 16" i7 since I paid $2100 out the door for it and the price has since gone up hundreds of dollars. If the i9 has issues, I will probably give up on life and walk within less than 6 feet of another human being...game over! :-P

I just bought 16'' MBP (i9 , 16GB, 1TB, 5500M) and having serious issues.

  1. when i want to open an app(specially chrome) it just gets dying. it lasts seconds and i cant click on anything.
  2. my battery is horrible. it just last for 2 hours without doing any heavy work. and i checked CPU usage and i didnt found any culprit.

i came from windows because of slow speed and now i just have 2x .

i spent this much money and having this issues, i just want kill myself.

Hey, thank you so much for the help. I have done what you instructed. I am surprised about CleanMyMac and Gemini, thought they are useful. Especially to optimize the ram since I noticed it kept increasing and I have to perform the task to make...the system running smooth. I attached the report and if you kindly check to see if everything is better now?
