In short: Pls. give http://maps.google.com/?force=canvas a try.

In detail:

Hm..., I myself experienced the issue today for the first time.

I then updated Safari to 13.0.4 without applying Security Update 2019-007 10.13.6 (as there are frightful reports about upgrade failures).

The problem still persists.

So the problem might be caused by some recent changes within Google Maps itself.

There have been similar reports years ago...

Google Maps recommends using 2D mode when experiencing problems with (now default) 3D mode on one of its Maps help pages at https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3031966?hl=en

2D Mode: This Google Maps version may work better on older or lower performance computers. It doesn’t have 3D images or WebGL, and it uses simple zooming and transitions. Open Maps in 2D Mode.

And yes: A bit dull, but working like a charm :-)

Thanks for the suggestion, https://www.google.com/maps/?force=canvas does get me there, and I don't normally use 3D imagery, so good fix. Many of my colleagues no longer use Safari, though, because of little glitches with so many applications, including the one I use to fill out my time sheet where I work. So it may be time to move on to.....Chrome, or some other browser.

Yes. The solution that worked for me was found on this site. The issue was my operating system. I have an older MacBook Pro that will not take the newest OS Catalina. I had to go find an older GMap version that was also posted on this site- I do not recall where it was located. Maybe someone can point you there. Or try a Google search for an older version. It might be V2.0

If you have a newer OS the new Map ought to work. If you have an older OS, you will need an older map version.

Pardon me, but No! You are giving incorrect information. Where did you get it?

The problem has nothing to do with the operating system because until a few days ago, the latest version of Google Maps worked fine on Safari using older operating systems. So why does it no longer work? Either an update of Safari, macOS, or Google Maps seems to be the culprit.

Strangely enough, until yesterday the latest version of Google Maps worked fine in Google Chrome and in Firefox, but not on Safari. Today, both Firefox and Chrome also only show a 2D version of Google Maps.

It needs to be fixed. Only using 2D is reverting to a state of things that was acceptable six or seven years ago.

That *is* interesting news! (thanks for the catch)

What version of the OS are you using, and on what device? I'm limited to either using the older El Capitan 10.11.6 or the latest macOS Catalina, version 10.15.2 thus cannot try/test it myself. Thanks!

Google Maps has changed today on Chrome for me , but my Firefox is still working.

What changed for you today on Chrome? Was it what Deep Sky Diver reported that Google Maps now displays in Chrome only in 2D, or is it something else?

but maybe is is some kind of bug.

Or it could be that Google Maps engineers are in the midst of a fix. (But I gotta say ... when I make guesses like that, I'm wrong way more than I'm right ; )

Thank you.

I was only quoting, saying things because that is what was said to me on this forum, and then someone reached out me for the information.

My issue was that I could not get Google Maps to load.

Turns out that I am using a browser that will not run the latest map. I came here looking for ideas- someone reached back to say there had been an update for gMaps, but that the earlier version would work.

That is what I did. Sorry if any of this is an issue. I have the maps now and that is all I wanted.

Thanks

I'm having the exact same issue as everyone else. Google maps just doesn't work at all with Safari anymore - but works with Firefox. I get this message when attempting to visit Google maps using Safari:

A problem repeatedly occurred with

https://www.google.com/maps"

It's been this way for, maybe a week or two, maybe longer. It's been a while.

I hope someone fixes this.

Spidermonkey- good handle, but waiting for a fix is an unknown in this case.

See my other posts- but the short version is that Google Maps had an update and unless you have the latest Apple OS on your device you cannot load it.

My MacBookPro cannot load the lated Mac OS so I am using the best of the old one- 10.13.6

The fix is to go to Google and find the prior map version- load it and it works.... I use it every day. No 3-D but I do not use it anyway.

Well same problem here for about 3-4 days... google maps fails to load on Safari. I have changed nothing at all in any settings, not upgraded or switched to anything new. I don't think I even did safari update recently either...... or can't remember doing so. Just suddenly it decided not to work on safari. works on firefox and chrome.

I'm running MacPro 2012 on Sierra 10.12.6 with Safari version 12.1.2.

This is a bummer....... :-(

Dec 19, 2019 10:55 PM in response to silver_mica

Hi silver_mica,

Thanks for the screenshot... I'm still tying to work this out -- I'm at a disadvantage as I only have access to Mac OS 10.15.2 and 10.11.6 ... not the versions from 10.12 to 10.15, which are the versions affected by the bug with Safari 13.0.4, so I can't test it myself.

In an earlier post you wrote,

Google maps on Safari started working for me today.

Could you describe that a little more? ... what didn't work before today... and what did work today?

Thanks for your time and assist with this!

@roberts735

In an earlier post Silver-Mica said s/he was using Safari 13.0.4 with macOS: High Sierra 10.13.6

AFAIK there isn't a Google Maps version number available for the bowser on OS.

FWIW, from other sources I now have multiple confirmations that Safari 13.0.4 with macOS: High Sierra 10.13.6 works, fully functionally (3D), as well as Safari 12.1.2 with OS 10.12.6.
