AirPods Pro clicking sound.

A few weeks ago the latest firmware update for the AirPods Pro released(2C54). Following this update, my right AirPod developed a clicking sound whenever ANC/Transparency mode was active. Whenever the AirPod is touched slightly by moving my head or touching it, you can hear a clicking/rattling sound. When both modes are off, the sound is not present. This leads me to believe the problem is not a hardware problem as nothing is physically damaged. The mic on the outside of the AirPods has a problem however. Today my left AirPod has also started producing this clicking/rattling sound whenever touched. I just want some answers/help. Thank you.

I’ve been having the EXACT same problem for the past few days now. I’ve been using them since release but nothing like this has happened until around now. I’ve also noticed that when I remove the rubber tip, the rattling noise disappears. I’m just wondering what’s causing this and if this is a software or hardware issue since my country’s in lockdown right now due to the virus and I can’t really have it replaced atm :/

Both examples involve hardware (mic pickups probably for AirPods and battery for the example you brought).

Since software/firmware are supposed to be deterministic, if you have two different result (mine:solved w replacement, yours:not solved) the second variable which is the hardware shall be considered.

In my opinion firmware might play a role, worsening or not the issue, but this issue shall have an hardware cause underneath.

Yeah I think everyone on this thread has experienced that same exact issue. It starts with one and soon the other will have the same symptoms. Send both left and right earbuds in for a replacement. I got mine replaced yesterday. It is amazing to hear the way they are supposed to sound in comparison to the unbearable clickety/static sounds.when they go bad. It’s a defect and you need to replace as soon as possible. There are no user or repair fixes for this problem other than a replacement.

Yeah unfortunately Apple does not care about it. The Apple authorized service center told me that it is a very common problem and that I would expect to have it even in a new replacement. Which happened four times. But the rude GM of the Apple flag ship store in Seoul scolded me for having swapped out my AirPods so much saying that that is very abnormal and refused to even put the AirPods in his ear to listen for the problem. And then he had the audacity to write that “problem was not reproducible. One time exception” but he refused to put the AirPods in a year… So how can you reproduce an issue if you don’t even try to listen for it?

Hello, I recently started having the same issue at the end of June and into July. It’s a steady Click, Click, Click noise like a clock when I don’t move and a lot of clicking when I do. It’s only in the Right EarPod the Left is perfect. I really loved these things and I hope they can fix whatever the issue is soon. They are almost brand new.

Software updates didn’t fix anything for me. This has something to do with noise canceling. When you disable both Transparency mode and active noise canceling modes; So you are left with do nothing mode witch in the middle, The problem disappears. I think these headphones or somehow prone to damage this way. I remember once dropping one them gently and the problem start happening.

You should replace the one having the problem at the store. And they will replace it for free if the AirPods Pro are still under warranty. I replaced mine from about month and the half ago and they are still fine. Though I have to note that the model number written on the AirPod Pro itself has changed from one to the other since I replaced only one AirPod Pro. New one is A2083 while the one l already have is A2084. And I feel that the new one has a little bit less quality to its finishing texture compared to the one I have, but not noticeable while using them.

I hope they don’t do this problem another time after my warranty expires, because after you replace them you will definitely notice how horrible and irritating they were.

I’m 100% confident this is a HARDWARE issue. It has been present and recurring throughout all firmware versions, and is only fixed by getting a replacement.

Bought my APP back in November (soon after launch) within two months (late January I think) the right starts clicking  - got it replaced in Feb (probably a lemon right? It happens) Left one starts clicking a few weeks later - replaced (Well maybe the first run was Just bad).

Less than two months later one starts clicking AGAIN, And the other follows suit a few weeks after that (May at this point).

COVID makes everything close down and leaving the house unappealing, so I just decide to live with it for a while.

About a month and a half passes, and oh my GOD I have never seen such a defective product from Apple.

Unless everyone in this thread, having gone through multiple replacements, is INCREDIBLY unlucky, I believe your AirPod pros WILL fail.

And when they do:

The progression of this defect is like clockwork.

It goes like this: starts off as a light intermittent clicking that’s easily ignorable, 1.5-3 months after purchase (might be longer if you listen at lower levels or don’t use them much).

Then 2-4 weeks after that, the clicking is no longer intermittent, but almost constant on any movement.

Give it another few weeks from that point and, while in ANC or transparency mode, any coughing, clearing throat, or talking at a moderate volume generates an obnoxious buzzing, almost feedback sounding noise into your ear.

As others have said, switching off ANC/transparency Makes the noise stop, indicating that the mics used for these features are somehow going bad.

Now if all that wasn’t bad enough, I then began to notice a similar but distinctly different issue I haven’t seen explicitly described.

Even in “OFF” mode (mics not active) both my APP started making a RATTLING noise upon any Mid-low frequency audio (bass) when at or above 70% volume. This eventually got to the point where bass in any music sounds like what I can only describe as a BLOWN OUT SPEAKER.

It was even apparent while listening to podcasts and videos, whenever someone spoke with a mid to low frequency in their voice (so every sentence).

Needless to say I got them Both replaced  (by mail this time, In early August).

This is now my third pair.

The difference is insane - you won’t realize how bad they’ve gotten until you get new ones.

It was immediately apparent that the ANC had gotten so weak it was basically not blocking noise at all on the old ones, and the difference in sound quality was night and day.

If you didn’t bother to read all that, I don’t blame you, it turned into more of a rant than I intended.

I’ve just been angry and disappointed - wanting to love what is otherwise a great product so badly, while apple seemingly has no real intention to permanently fix the problem.

Sure they’ll send replacements, but only until your warranty is up. Nothing is actually “fixed”. The underlying problem is not “resolved”.

I curse myself for not buying AppleCare, but then again, why should I have to insure myself from apple’s faulty design?

No official statement, no real acknowledgement of the problem, no word of warranty extension until an actual HARDWARE revision can be made.

So far all we’ve gotten is “did you try cleaning it with a q-tip?”

I’m incredibly disappointed - this is not how you keep happy customers, and it is not what I would expect from Apple’s engineering and quality standards.

It is now mid September,

and my right AirPod Pro has started clicking.

Now I am already on my 3rd replacement for the right ear (AirPods pro), it happens every 3 months.... and my warranty is ending in the near future. What should I do when my warranty expires? I mean, it is clearly a faulty product/software or whatever that apple did not fix. Will I get an extension of my warranty if the same issue happens again?

Oct 28, 2020 8:42 PM in response to Ethan_Nuuu

This is third time send my airpods pro for repair and the sound problem on airpods pro time to time it will come out and there is no commitment after talking to apple support. and once over the warranty it will be on our end's responsibility. I am not happy with this kind of product that causing user spend time to repair and still not provide any reasonable solution.

Omg I'm dealing with the same issue! Plus, I don't wanna spend another $89 trying to replace it when I took well care of my AirPods only for it to have crackling noises on ANC and Transparency mode. I tried reseting it and did whatever I was told to do, still nothing solved the issue. It's also funny to me how so many people are experiencing the SAME issue. Please fix this issue.

I also have this same problem. As soon as my head moves slightly or i am talking, i can hear a clicking noise inside my right airpod pro. If i talk a little louder then it sounds like something is rattling inside of the airpod. It all stops as soon as noise cancellation and transparency mode is off. All started after my firmware updated.

Apple has posted a recall on its site regarding the static sound issue with AirPods pro. I also heard annoying noise when making a phone call with ANC and Transparency modes turned on in my headset. It was replaced for the second time under warranty. I found out that this problem is on devices with hardware version 1.0 and it is fixed in 1.1.

My exchanged product arrived last week. The hardware version was still 1.0. There was no static sound issue when I first put on the headphones. Especially when the transparency mode is turned on, you forget that you even have headphones in your ear after a while. It is that successful. The software version of the incoming product was outdated. That night I put my phone and headset on and left them on charge. The next morning, interestingly, I felt as if there was pressure when the headset was in my ear. The product, which I said you would forget that you even had headphones in your ear after a while the previous day, caused discomfort in my ear all day because of that pressure sensation. When I checked the software version I saw it was updated. The spirtual sound feature had already come.

Currently there is no static sound issue. It just felt like there was a slight decrease in the bass, but I wasn't sure because I couldn't compare it with the previous one. The previous static audio problem also appeared after a while. I'm worried that it will happen again. Fortunately, the product is still under warranty and Apple is good at service.

However, although it is written on the internet that this problem is fixed in 1.1, I do not understand why the new product that came to me came to 1.0.

AirPods Pro clicking sound.
