Mac Mini crashing on sleep

After the recent security release for Mojave my Mac Mini (2018) crashes when it goes to sleep. Every time I have to restart it and Finder reports that my Mac crashed. I have an eGPU which has been working like a champ to date... but curious if other people are seeing this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I haven’t read this whole thread, but it seems, these are the issues that are also discussed in this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251244094?page=1

I’d like to sum up the results, we had collected so far:

  • Troubles began with the installation of the Security Update 2020-002 and Safari 13.1
  • Affected hardware: Mac mini 2018, iMac Pro and recent Mac Book Pro (hardware with Apple’s T2 Security Chip).
  • Affected OS: High Sierra, Mojave, partly Catalina

Possible issues:

  • no power supply on at least 1 Thunderbolt port (i.e. Mac mini ’18: TB-Bus 1, port next to HDMI)
  • Kernel Panic through sleep or shut down commands, related to BridgeOS
  • macOS crash when disconnecting an eGPU by the Disconnect command in the top bar eGPU menu
  • some experience seemingly random restarts of their Macs with upcoming BridgeOS Kernel Panic Reports afterwards

The Security Update installed a Firmware Update for the T2 chip. This seems the reason, why the actual problems cannot be fixed by a re-installation of macOS: the new T2 firmware (build: 17P4263), located in a protected memory area of the T2 chip itself, will not be replaced with an older version during a fresh macOS installation.

The T2 chip holds the SMC, which is related to sleep and shut down.

The Security Update 2020-002 also installed changes to IOThunderboltFamily and Kernel, which might be the cause for the troubles with eGPU and failing power supply on 1 TB port.

Found solutions so far:

  • To avoid the sleep and shut down BridgeOS Kernel Panics, it seems that not using (not even launching) Safari 13.1 is a reliable workaround. This new Safari version seems to trigger a bug which results in the aforementioned problems. Using a different browser, such as Firefox or Chrome does not trigger the bug.
  • Failing power supply for TB port can be restored by a SMC reset (some had also success with NVRAM/PRAM reset).
  • No solutions were found so far for the macOS crash while using the Disconnect command for an eGPU. Disconnecting without macOS crash can only be done when Mac is shut down.

We have send in lots of Kernel Panic Report and bug reports (via Apple Product Feedback).

So far nobody got any response by Apple. We’re actually waiting for a fix with upcoming updates, as this is clearly a software problem.

Expected solution:

Apple must release bug fixed versions of BridgeOS and Safari for High Sierra, Mojave and probably Catalina. (Catalina users encounter some other issues since the SecUpd that need to be addressed).

Same issues here, no change with SecUpd 2020-004 Mojave.

BridgeOS crash with restart by sleep command and crash report on next system start up by shut down command as long as Safari was launched once before.

Immediate macOS crash when disconnecting a TB-3 eGPU by the appropriate top bar menu command.

Mac mini '18 / 10.14.6.

I'm starting to believe that Apple will not be able/willing to fix these issues anymore.

Catalina update did NOT fix the issue. Still keep crushing with Bridge OS error.

3rd day for me without crash. It might be that it is dependent on further configuration, GPU(?), or attached hardware.

I have two displays 2560x1440, both on USB-C, two external WD disks, connected to USB-C.

Energy saver settings (default): 1. hard disks to sleep when possible, 2. wake for network access, 3. enable power nap.

I have the same issue with my 2018 MacMini running Mojave 10.14.6. Practically every time it goes to sleep it crashes with the BridgeOS crash. Surprised Apple has not provided a fix for this yet. I send in a report for every crash. I don't have any accessories connected to my MacMini besides a monitor. Using the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. I suppose I should just upgrade to Catalina. Is upgrading to Catalina guaranteed to fix the issue?

Thanks for trouble shooting, what a pain to see it still happening after the reinstall.

Mine only started crashing since March 2020 security update (running Mojave)

Crash reporter is showing BridgeOS error for me. It often happens when Mac has been asleep for a while, but also seeing error when starting up (suggesting shutdown is when error is occuring as well).

I too have external drives (2 via USB 3.1 type C ports)

Also use Dropbox (I think someone mentioned this)

Do you use Chronosync (automatic backup are scheduled on my Mac)?

Apr 1, 2020 12:03 PM in response to Lexvold

I agree. I also had the problem only since the security update. I am not seeing anything in Crash Reporter, I don't know how to show Crash Reporter. I had the drives unplugged last time. Dropbox I have. I don't have Chronosync but I use others.

I see previous shutdown cause as -20 but I don't have an explanation for this.

I have removed all kernel extensions and have been getting rid of startup files but none should cause this problem.

I put a call in to Apple but it promised to be an hours-long chat.

This is the only explanation I found of -20 : https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/344570/macbook-pro-2018-random-restart-previous-shutdown-cause-20 and it's not recent and has nothing useful. I don't use Macafee.

I also cannot give full drive access to EtreCheck any more. It shows as having access, but doesn't.

Keep us informed.

I found using Caffeine or system settings to prevent sleep did not work. Instead I have a Word file with unsaved changes open, and that did it last night.

This is an increasingly bad problem and I suspect the T2 chip has a flaw that's been aggravated by this last update. It's the only thing I can figure, though I'll try a memory test later.

I have the crash whether I open Safari or not, now. The moment it tries sleeping.

I found that the overnight crash when I had sleep disabled, was probably because of a scheduled sleep.

Boot ROM and iBridge are the same as yours but that may be because I created a Catalina boot drive. It doesn't crash but that's probably because it doesn't sleep.

It's very hard to believe Apple will fix this issue when I can't get Apple to record it as a bug, unless I install Catalina on my internal drive...

At some point I have to decide between CS6+Office and MacOS. Do I stick with Mac and start with all new software, or do I stick with my software and install Windows?

Computer slept overnight, with no keyboard plugged in. No problems. I tried using a different keyboard of the same make and model (they've been discontinued for ages and I really like them, so I got a spare) and it seems to sleep and wake just fine. Light on the mouse goes out, but light on the Mini stays on - that's how we measure sleep, right?

I don't know why a keyboard would cause this problem or why Apple Support did not suggest removing the keyboard.
