I’ve no idea “why”, but you may find that a forced-restart may clear any isolated issues:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Ok gang. Finally had a convo with a very nice lady from Apple. First thing, apparently they DO monitor these discussions as she specifically mentioned this is where they got my original complaint from. So someone is paying attention.

We spent about 15 minutes on the phone. She asked me the usual tech support type stuff. What was I doing when I updated to 13.4.1, had I added any other apps at the same time (no), how quick did the problem present itself (immediately). Things like that. She was pretty thorough.

We even tried to do remote diagnostics but the iPad wouldn't stay up long enough to connect.

So keep the faith all! It looks like they are (at least) investigating, although she was very clear to say they were not troubleshooting at this time, just gathering information.

By the way, I'm on a couple of different discussions about this problem, so I'm going to copy and paste this post. Just in case you think I'm some sort of bot or something.

Earlier there was a tip posted that recommended to put the iPad on a hard surface, then press down hard to the left of the home button. I did this with mine, and it did stop rebooting every 3 minutes. But, it was only a temporary fix as it began doing the reboot loop again a couple days later. So, for now, if I want to do anything on the iPad more than 3 minutes, I do the press down trick and it quits rebooting. That seems to indicate that there is a hardware issue, but it wasn't until 13.4.1 that the software was able to detect it. The sheer number of iPad 10.5's having the same issue would also indicate that this iPad model was defective at the factory. Is there a "lemon law" for electronics? The right thing for Apple to do would be to recall these iPads or replace them.

Same problem, same results! iPad Pro 10.5 rebooting every 3 minutes immediately after installing 13.4.1, problem disappeared after re-installing 13.3.1, then reappeared after auto update to 13.5. Restores in DFU mode no help and either is installing 13.5.1. Same analytics results: no successful checkins from com.apple.thermalmointord in 180 seconds. This is clearly a result of the interaction of the 13.4.1 update on this model of iPad. Apple Support tried to help over several phone calls but ultimately offered a replacement for around AUS$700!

IPad Pro 10.5 , reboot promblem,IPAD Log show the watchdog thermalmonitord not receive the alive message, but the battery status is good, I don't think it a hardware promblem, maybe some IPAD pro 10.5's sensors are not the same, kernel not driver the sensor, thermalmonitord detect a not exist sensor. All are guess , hope next upgrade (iOS 14.0) will fix it .

I’m having the same issue as well, except my iPad won’t even get passed the Apple logo. After I installed the latest update, I started to get the reboots periodically and it got worse over time. I’ve even tried restoring it in DFU mode, but the screen remains black the entire time, even if it’s on. I really hope Apple does the right thing here, my iPad is only 2 years old and it shouldn’t be broken due to one of their own software updates.

My suggestion would be to research the consumer law in your country. In the UK it is quite a robust law that even Apple is not above and once I was able to go to the store (thanks Lockdown) that I purchased from and invoke my rights there, I called Apple Care back and they waived the repair fee even though I'm out of warranty. Currently waiting on the return of my ipad so I'll let you know what happens there.

I have exactly the same issue - it first occurred the day that 13.4 was released, immediately after I upgraded. I have had 2 lengthy support calls during lock down then a Genius appointment on Friday - all saying its a hardware fault and as my Apple Care expired 12 months ago I am out of luck:(. I don't believe it is a HW fault due to it starting straight after the upgrade. I have tried 13.4.1 and now 13.5.1 but no luck. Very disappointed that and iPad (with the keyboard and pencil costing >£1K should not only last 3 years!

Did you actually call Apple and have this iPad boot loop issue escalated up to higher tier Apple support employees?

You can go above the initial contact, first tier support.

You can calmly ask to have this issue escalated up the product support chain all the way to engineering level support employees, if need be.

You need to keep doing this and you need to keep posting feedback until Apple finally gets the message that there is something wrong with their upgrades/updates that are bricking/severely disabling certain iPad Pro models.

Everyone affected needs to stay on top of this and keep hounding Apple with feedback posts and constant phone calls.

DO NOT USE THE CHAT SUPPORT!

CALL instead!.

If none of you do not keep trying to help yourself, by hounding Apple and staying on top of this issue, Apple may not do anything about this issue.

Everyone here is already a couple more updates in with no fix for this.

All of you need to stay vigilant and active with Apple on this issue or it will go ignored.

Best of Luck to ALL of you!

A moderator deleted my first post because they said it was a rant. Yet I was merely pointing out that I was also a victim of updating to 13.5.1 and getting stuck in the reboot loop caused by a panic from watchdog not being able to read thermalmonitord. Was working perfectly prior to the update. Restores were no help. And Apple support said it would take $500 to replace my iPad.

I’m heading into the store Saturday (Birmingham,UK) and wondered what part of the consumer law helped you? I’ve spoken on chat and the phone with it being escalated numerous times and keep getting told I need to pay £450 as they believe it’s a hardware fault.

I’m heading into the shop Saturday so I’m hoping it goes better there !

Just been "requoted" for repair service that I was told would be free. They've conveniently found a bend in the iPad that wasn't there before I mailed it in to the repair centre and Apple say there is no way to receive the photographs and video I took before and during the packaging process that prove the iPad was in pristine condition. I'm waiting on a callback from a supervisor but this is so underhand.
