I’ve no idea “why”, but you may find that a forced-restart may clear any isolated issues:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

HI,

I have had the same issue with an Ipad Pro 2017 10.5". Went through all the troubleshooting steps with Apple phone support who escalated me to the store where i attended yesterday.

They also attempted to do a full restore to confirm the issues and managed to replicate the issue and on analysis of the logs tried to point to an issue with the motherboard even though all their diagnostics came up okay.

Got escalated to the store manager who claimed that they cant replace it under UK Consumer law as the issue wasn't raised within 6mo of the purchase and hence i have no right to claim against UK consumer law and that the only option was to pay for a replacement. I've subsequently read up on UK consumer law and seems like he was wrong. The only option i was presented was a discount to the replacement costs of 30pc (which wasnt anything to do with consumer law) or to get a 10pc discount on a new device which still meant forking out £600+ for an equivalent device (mine has 256Gb and cellular).

Anyone know the exact rules on consumer law protection - mine was bought 2yrs and 6mo ago.

The story continues! I finally managed to get somebody at Apple to take at look at this thread and it has been forwarded to engineering support. My iPad is on its way back to me as repair centre can't do anything, and IMO it isn't a hardware issue anyway. So, once I have the iPad back, I'm going to video the reboot cycle a few times and those videos are going to be forwarded to engineering to see if they can make heads or tails of it. I'll keep you updated with any further developments. I'm not holding out a lot of hope at this point but if people keep calling, keep referring to this thread then hopefully they'll listen.

Question: Aside from the reboot loop, is your iPad otherwise fine? Mine is perfect, no other performance issues, no problems with any apps, no battery issues. I told them I don't need or want a hardware repair or a replacement, I just need them to fix the bugs!!

This is what I figured! It's so frustrating isn't it? I was chatting about how I still have an old iPad2 that I passed on to my 6yo niece who has since absolutely destroyed it but it still works!! And a MacBook Pro that still works beautifully 6years after purchase which is three times longer than any pc laptop I've had. I trust Apple build quality and so I know it absolutely has to be a bug to do with that bloody update!!

I have not gotten any resolution with this. For now the ipad sits on my desk plugged in can use it for 2 to 3 minutes then the reboot happens. Frustrating that this has been going on for so long but more frustrating I cant use the device and makes me think about just breaking down and buying a new one. if I didn't use it then I could see not replacing but I do use it a lot

I feel the same way about this. I can't trust that this wouldn't recur in the future. When my first iPad died, I accepted it and bought the Pro. I've loved both iPads for 6 years. I used them every day. I miss my functioning iPad, but I can't accept how Apple is ignoring the issue that I know for CERTAIN it's a software bug. I feel my trust was misplaced. Apple changed a lot in recent years. I'm already considering Galaxy Tab S6. If Apple gave us the option to return to 13.3.1, our ordeal will come to an end but we don't have control over our devices. It is sad! It feels like we are just renting our devices, not really owning them.

This is why for the past 4 years I have taken the super cautionary approach to Apple's iOS/iPadOS upgrades/updates.

Most of my family’s iOS devices are still running iOS 12.4.7.

I have two iPad Pro models with one still running iOS 10.3.3 and the other older 2016 iPad Pro model, purchased recently Only had iPadOS 13.2.3, which I have kept it at all this time!

My wife's iPad 7th gen has not been updated at all since purchase back in January 2020 and has been kept at iPadOS 13.1.2.

Apple has had very erratic quality with their various years of iOS upgrades/updates that I simply stopped trusting them and really watch these communities to see how good or bad an iOS upgrade/update is before I make a decision to pass on an upgrade/update.

So, far, iOS 11 and 13 have been erratic in quality and stability.

iOS 12 had its ups and downs too, but seemed more stable, but by the time I had decided to install iOS 12.4, iPadOS 13 came out and I missed the window of opportunity for my iOS 10 iPad Pro.

I have simply lost my faith and trust in Apple that their iOS/iPadOS upgrades/updates just work!

I hold out no hope for the up and coming iPadOS 13.6 update and I will just wait it all out for iPadOS 14 in the fall and see how all of it pans out!

One thing I will end up doing in the Fall when iPadOS 14 comes out is a purchase of a 1st gen Apple Pencil.

I loathe the design of the 1st gen Apple Pencil and have been using another third party, smart Bluetooth stylus for well over 3 years, now, but Apple keep more integrating the Apple Pencil more and more into iOS/iPadOS itself, now, that the Apple Pencil is becoming more of a “must have/need” accessory now, instead of an optional one.

There are simply too few iPad Pro users affected by this boot loop issue for Apple to care and to take any time or research to look into and this issue and to come up with a software fix.

And, as I continually state, this maybe a combination hardware/software issue with no fix or resolution.

Could just be a small batch of defective iPad Pro models that always go through the supply chain.

This post has only 9 pages of users who reported this boot loop issue with repeat users posting here!

There is one more smaller, active post here the same, as well.

So, we're talking about, to date, what, maybe, MAYBE 100 users here who reported this issue to date?

Too few users affected by this for Apple to care and look into this issue and issue a fix for this in a software update.

Especially if it is both a hardware/software issue.

This is my guess as to why Apple is failing to do anything about this issue on a wider investigative level.

A very, VERY low percentage of users being affected.

Cheaper, I think to opt just to take the out of warranty, new or refurbished replacement, 10.5 inch iPad Pro and still use your existing accessories.

OR

Consider a refurbished 2018 model iPad Pro which would be 20%-30% cheaper OR even another option, the 10.5 inch iPad Air 3.

Same screen, same laminated and coated display/glass with the higher color gamut and tru-tone display and has an updated CPU. You still end up using all your existing accessories.

You just miss out on all the other “Pro” features, like the 120 Hz screen refresh rate, 1-3 GBs more of internal RAM, 4-speaker audio and the Apple Pencil 2.

Purely your decisions on what you want to do.

I don't have another $1500 to spend, so a $500-600 replacement iPad seems like a better deal to me and you go on using all your existing iPad accessories that you do not have to purchase all over again, too, if all of your existing accessories are all still in working order.

I can confirm that on my Ipad Pro 10.5 the 3min crash reboot loop is back. I had it in IOS 13.4.1, it was fixed in 13.5. I held back on updating to 13.5.1 because it worked fine again. But now i updated to 13.5.1, and the crash reboot loop was again implemented by Apple. Sadly i cannot go back to 13.5 since it isnt signed anymore... :(

So i really have to throw away 800€ of hardware because Apple thinks not enough users have this issue?

Greetings,

Enterich

Apple have become a real heap of sh*t of late. Just had a call back from Apple that they won't do anything about it and have used a small crack on the screen as their get out. Pointed out that their hardware diagnostics in store highlighted no issues with the hardware and the screen issue is purely cosmetic and that it is in perfect working order.

The agent was sympathetic but pretty poor form from their legal team to use that as a way to get out of their consumer law responsibilities.

Time to switch to a Microsoft Surface device and replace both my Macbook Pro and iPad in one go.

It’s shocking really that they are just completely ignoring the issue and fobbing it off has a hardware issue. Actually makes me pretty angry. I Loved my iPad and it’s now just an expensive brick.

Makes me want to sell my iPhone too because of how this is handled and switch back to android, at least there I could have flashed back to an old firmware and solved the issue myself
