YES! I can corroborate that the current iPadOS 14 Beta update APPEARS TO FIX the 3-minute boot loop issue. As I write, I've had several hours without problems on Public Beta 3, which is the only one so far to fix the issue. As said by others, make sure you get Beta 3 to test whether it fixes this issue for you. (On my first go at this I was (automatically) given Beta 2, and was only offered the OTA update to Beta 3 the next day.)
TL;DR:
Opinions: (1) Some people posting on this forum seem to have different and/or additional symptoms to the original poster, and the majority including me (symptoms summarised below). So if this fix doesn't work for you it probably means that you have a different underlying problem that needs a different solution. (2) While I'm glad this seems fixed for now, the whole thing leaves a bad taste. Final word from Apple support at every turn has been, 'this is a hardware issue: pay £$500+ for repair'. This fix proves (if we needed proof) that iPadOSes 13.4.1 - 13.6 contained a 'bug' that unnecessarily bricked some relatively recent, top of the range (once), previously fully functional iPads FOR 2 MONTHS. There did not appear to be a mechanism for affected users to get a fair and timely resolution, so some (many?) paid for repairs or new devices. (I relied on my personal iPad for work and my employer paid for a replacement, fortunately just a week ago and so eligible for 'open-box' return.) My opinion of Apple would only be (mostly) restored if I see the bug acknowledged in 'patch notes', and hear that people affected get repair and replacement costs refunded on request. I get that affected users were 'a drop in the ocean', but the fact we've been vindicated (it's a firmware 'bug' not (just?) a 'hardware issue') shows that Apple needs a better procedure for this type of situation. Otherwise, they're accepting that some customers are going to get screwed, and they're fine with it.
Symptoms: immediately after updating to iPadOS 13.4.1 (and I assume any firmware 13.4.1 - 13.6), my iPad Pro Gen 2 10.5 reboots to Apple logo 3 minutes after sign in leaving the following in Settings>Privacy>Data Analytics: 2 x "stacks+thermalmonitord...ips" followed by "panic-full...ips" "no successful checkins from com.apple.thermalmonitord in 180 seconds..."
Timeline & attempts to fix: I upgrade to 13.4.1 on/around 10 May; posted in this forum on 19 May; had a tech support chat session in mid-May; emailed customer relations (as suggested by MichelPM) in May; had a Genius Bar appointment on 19 July (when I finally got back to London). I lost count of the number of DFU restores and iPadOS upgrades through 13.6 - none of which fixed the issue.
Yeah the repair prices are crazy! I even updated to the iOS 14 beta in hope it would be fixed but still keeps rebooting. Going to the Apple store Saturday but I’m being realistic and I don’t think anything will come of it
Just been "requoted" for repair service that I was told would be free. They've conveniently found a bend in the iPad that wasn't there before I mailed it in to the repair centre and Apple say there is no way to receive the photographs and video I took before and during the packaging process that prove the iPad was in pristine condition. I'm waiting on a callback from a supervisor but this is so underhand.
Shocking. To be fair, mine actually does have a slight bend in it. I have no idea how it got like that as really careful with it, but after a quick search on Reddit it seems it’s a common theme with iPad Pro’s, even the 2020 models.
The story continues! I finally managed to get somebody at Apple to take at look at this thread and it has been forwarded to engineering support. My iPad is on its way back to me as repair centre can't do anything, and IMO it isn't a hardware issue anyway. So, once I have the iPad back, I'm going to video the reboot cycle a few times and those videos are going to be forwarded to engineering to see if they can make heads or tails of it. I'll keep you updated with any further developments. I'm not holding out a lot of hope at this point but if people keep calling, keep referring to this thread then hopefully they'll listen.
Question: Aside from the reboot loop, is your iPad otherwise fine? Mine is perfect, no other performance issues, no problems with any apps, no battery issues. I told them I don't need or want a hardware repair or a replacement, I just need them to fix the bugs!!
This is what I figured! It's so frustrating isn't it? I was chatting about how I still have an old iPad2 that I passed on to my 6yo niece who has since absolutely destroyed it but it still works!! And a MacBook Pro that still works beautifully 6years after purchase which is three times longer than any pc laptop I've had. I trust Apple build quality and so I know it absolutely has to be a bug to do with that bloody update!!
Keep us updated with how that goes, hmerali. lukeoneill90, how did the store visit go?
ppercoskie, mehdichopin - utterly frustrating to have a perfectly good iPad that's only useful for three minutes at a time no?? 🤦♀️ Where are you guys in terms of a resolution?
I have not gotten any resolution with this. For now the ipad sits on my desk plugged in can use it for 2 to 3 minutes then the reboot happens. Frustrating that this has been going on for so long but more frustrating I cant use the device and makes me think about just breaking down and buying a new one. if I didn't use it then I could see not replacing but I do use it a lot
Feeling the same way. Their whole response to this has been really poor. If they’d acknowledged it and fixed it then fine, these things happen. But what’s to say that this wouldn’t happen again in the future? Even if you bought a new one. Like others mine was working perfectly before that update.
I feel the same way about this. I can't trust that this wouldn't recur in the future. When my first iPad died, I accepted it and bought the Pro. I've loved both iPads for 6 years. I used them every day. I miss my functioning iPad, but I can't accept how Apple is ignoring the issue that I know for CERTAIN it's a software bug. I feel my trust was misplaced. Apple changed a lot in recent years. I'm already considering Galaxy Tab S6. If Apple gave us the option to return to 13.3.1, our ordeal will come to an end but we don't have control over our devices. It is sad! It feels like we are just renting our devices, not really owning them.
Completely agree with you. I’ve also been looking at the Samsung Galaxy tab s6. I love my iPad and I’m sure I’d love a new iPad but I feel helpless with this current situation and have lost faith that Apple are going to fix it, instead of telling all of us we have a hardware fault.
This is why for the past 4 years I have taken the super cautionary approach to Apple's iOS/iPadOS upgrades/updates.
Most of my family’s iOS devices are still running iOS 12.4.7.
I have two iPad Pro models with one still running iOS 10.3.3 and the other older 2016 iPad Pro model, purchased recently Only had iPadOS 13.2.3, which I have kept it at all this time!
My wife's iPad 7th gen has not been updated at all since purchase back in January 2020 and has been kept at iPadOS 13.1.2.
Apple has had very erratic quality with their various years of iOS upgrades/updates that I simply stopped trusting them and really watch these communities to see how good or bad an iOS upgrade/update is before I make a decision to pass on an upgrade/update.
So, far, iOS 11 and 13 have been erratic in quality and stability.
iOS 12 had its ups and downs too, but seemed more stable, but by the time I had decided to install iOS 12.4, iPadOS 13 came out and I missed the window of opportunity for my iOS 10 iPad Pro.
I have simply lost my faith and trust in Apple that their iOS/iPadOS upgrades/updates just work!
I hold out no hope for the up and coming iPadOS 13.6 update and I will just wait it all out for iPadOS 14 in the fall and see how all of it pans out!
One thing I will end up doing in the Fall when iPadOS 14 comes out is a purchase of a 1st gen Apple Pencil.
I loathe the design of the 1st gen Apple Pencil and have been using another third party, smart Bluetooth stylus for well over 3 years, now, but Apple keep more integrating the Apple Pencil more and more into iOS/iPadOS itself, now, that the Apple Pencil is becoming more of a “must have/need” accessory now, instead of an optional one.
I tried the 13.6 beta it still did the same thing and I saw someone said 14 did the same thing so the issue is not fixed. a new 11 inch ipad pro with applecare the pencil and the keyboard almost 1500 dollars.
Apple have become a real heap of sh*t of late. Just had a call back from Apple that they won't do anything about it and have used a small crack on the screen as their get out. Pointed out that their hardware diagnostics in store highlighted no issues with the hardware and the screen issue is purely cosmetic and that it is in perfect working order.
The agent was sympathetic but pretty poor form from their legal team to use that as a way to get out of their consumer law responsibilities.
Time to switch to a Microsoft Surface device and replace both my Macbook Pro and iPad in one go.
It’s shocking really that they are just completely ignoring the issue and fobbing it off has a hardware issue. Actually makes me pretty angry. I Loved my iPad and it’s now just an expensive brick.
Makes me want to sell my iPhone too because of how this is handled and switch back to android, at least there I could have flashed back to an old firmware and solved the issue myself
We have contacted Apple ad nauseum and are being the squeaky wheel. I simply posted that 13.6 didn't work as info to others. We do not need to see your reposts every time someone vents on this thread.
I think it's time I remove myself from this thread.
