After update to iOS 13.5.1 battery drain is ridiculous and phone overheats

Ever since updating to iOS 13.5.1, my phone's battery drain is ridiculous. Previously, from the time I removed my phone from the charger at 6:30 AM until I put it back on the charger at 11:00 PM, my battery would drain to around 80%. Now, it's at 80% by 8:30 AM. The device is also hot all the time. Clearly, something is wrong with this update, and it needs to be fixed.

Hi Bella_1954

Sadly some updates do cause iPhones to work harder [generating heat], they usually settle down after a few recharge/restart cycles.

If you contact Apple Support they can diagnose any battery issues or whatever.

Turning off Push and changing to Fetch Manually helps [see SravanKrA's tips above] as well as turning off Background App Refresh.

Check Settings>Battery to see what is using the most power and adjust that app if you can. If you know an app using the most power is one you close properly then definitely do a Force Restart - this clears up any legacy issues that have carried over from before the update [if you left a lot of apps 'open' when you update, this can happen] -

Force Restart: In quick succession: Briefly press & release the Up Volume, then briefly press & release the Down Volume, then press and HOLD DOWN the Power Button, and keep it held as the screen shows the power off slider, still keeping the Power Button held while the screen goes dark and keep it held until the Apple logo appears, then release it. The phone will restart, hopefully a lot cleaner than before.

best of luck.

I did all the tips on SravanKrA's message and my phone is still terrible. This morning it was 100% and in 2 1/2 hours it was down to 36% and I didn't use it much. A couple of phone calls and briefly looking at emails. My phone was previously good before this update, I could go a whole day of looking at various apps and playing games. Now it drains so quickly. This is crap!!! Apple need to fix this with another update.

Dear Bella_1954, basa71

I quite agree with you all.

Apple are getting more useless at changing stuff, making it worse for users who aren't the optimum customer [they still haven't fixed the iPad Photos sync issue from Nov 2019]. This is the worst Update/Battery Draining issue of recent years. All we can do on this forum is make suggestions. They won't work for everybody and it is only slightly better than throwing the thing away.

Personally, I'm looking at reducing my involvement with computer based activity and investigating Android/PC stuff. I have a Nokia 6310 and the iPhone X is still a useful iPod/Camera. I've been using Apple since 1993 but their market [despite the new 'cheap' iPhone] now seems to be for themselves and top-end users who have deep pockets. The everyday user is now just a revenue stream for them to exploit.

Always contact Apple Support as soon as you have an issue - if we all do the same, Apple will know they've done something wrong. Probably won't worry them but you never know...

I am just an aggrieved user with no particular expertise, just sharing ideas. That is the last I am going to say on this forum.

Stay Safe.

I am having the same issues. Phone gets hot after a few minutes of use. Battery drains from 100% to 79% in a few minutes when phone is not in use. I have reset my phone which didn’t help. All the 19 suggestions do not work. My battery health is 100% and the battery is less than a year old. It takes forever to recharge. Very disappointing how this update causes more problems.

Haha, I got my iPhone XR to the service center because:

    1. Battery health went 93% in a few months time
    2. Overheating and battery 100% > 20% after 2-3 hours of plain safari and news reading/social

It used to work well.

Now, "support" said both are normal. I laughed my guts out after hearing it.

I have already placed an ad to sell the iPhone. This is not the first time this happened to one of my iPhone devices and this is unacceptable both for a very expensive device and for their support replies as well.

Most probably, I am switching to a different brand. I am so tired of this.

Very disappointing from Apple. This update literally ruined my life. Since this update, I am no longer able to use my phone properly. Let me tell you about my experience with this update. My battery literally exploded because of the heat and isn't able to charge anymore. The phone got so hot that it burned my leg. very painful.

I have always had a lot of confidence in the Apple brand. However, now this confidence has dropped to 0. I am furious and demand an immediate update. Very disappointing.

Greetz.

I am watching the screen with all apps closed and my battry just dropped from 88% to 63% in 10 minutes. Last night it went from 28% to 4% in less than 5 minutes and just shut off. The phone is hot after I charge it and over all stays warm. I want to upgrade my 6s plus to a new iphone this fall when the 12 comes out, but this current drain really is not acceptable. Phone is barely useable like this.

Same thing for me. My XS is always hot after updating. It’s been this way for several months now. Battery life is drained super fast when doing simple things such as reading emails or surfing the web (light media, text only) or even nothing at all. This latest update really sucks! Apple please fix this. I simply can’t use my phone anymore. I have nothing running in the background, I’m only using 1/3 of the space and still it’s hot! I wished I never had upgraded iOS :(

Same here with an iPadPro 10,5 (2017): The battery drains unbelievably fast (doesn´t last the night to wake me up after a full charge), charges extremely slow (like half a day) and the device gets so hot around the apple that I´m putting it on a cooling pad while charging or using. Tried to change to another charger (also apple), doesn´t seem to help. It´s ok-ish while just charging, apple sign gets hot instantly when screen is turned on.

All those cute little tipps on how to save battery life seem just ridiculous in this context. It´s a three year old device that I planned on using at least one or two more years before passing it on to a family member. We have older ipads that are almost never used which do last for weeks with a charge. Now my wonderful shiny iPadPro is shot. I don´t think I want another iPad if this can happen again. It hurts less with a cheaper device...

Same here. My XR is draining quickly! The phone also has great difficulty charging . I have tried many fixes, outlets, charging devices etc. I am actually picking up a new phone today but if it is the software problem I am afraid I will have the same issue. My husband has had a Samsung for about 6 years. Not one problem! If this dies not get resolved immediately I will switch product to a Samsung. Apple is going down in their quality. Last issue was the big battery fraud! Now this? Really Apple you should be all over this considering your recent history!!!
