Repeated logic board failures on 2018 MacBook Pro

I am faced with repairing an out of warranty 2018 MacBook Pro with a Mac Service Center diagnosed logic board failure. My concern is will the new board eventually fail or since this has been reported to be a problem with this model can I expect the new board is more durable. Does anybody else have experience with this. My option is of course to repair it, almost a $600 repair, or buy a new Mac. I have not given up on Macs I have owned three MacBook Pros over the last 15 years and they until now been very reliable.

Just buy a new one. I’m now out 1400 dollars because my 2018 MacBook Pro logic board failed in September 2019 (two weeks out of year warranty and Apple refused to cover it). Now in January 2021 my logic board again is broken and my computer suddenly isn’t turning on (was working fine yesterday). Not sure how it isn’t being considered a part of the recall given the same part has been replaced thrice in a 3 year period.

Thank you for expressing the same concern I voiced earlier. I am happy to learn some are getting help from Apple outside of warranty. My concern whether I or Apple pays is if this is the same logic board same construction how much faith do I have in how long I have before another failure and with it loss of data. Yes I can and do backup but you can still lose data if you do not have cloud access or are away from your office backup drive. That actually happened in my case. My failure occurred while traveling. So I still have my older MacBook Pro going strong while the 2018 one sits on a shelf. So, Apple can and does build great products but it seems they can have problems and in our case we pay.

O computador voltou a funcionar.

I am Grateful for your answer.

I have already taken the computer to the Apple authorized repair shop in Fortaleza, where I live.

The problem consists of logic board failure and inflated batteries.

In order to recover my data (since the SSD memory is soldered on the board), and as the board was out of warranty, I sent the computer to a repair shop (not an Apple authorized one) in São José do Rio Pardo, São Paulo.

The logic board was recovered. The batteries are under Apple's quality program and they would be replaced at no cost.

However, Apple's authorized workshop, (and Apple's call center in Brazil), now refuse to exchange batteries because they claim that the computer was handled by an unauthorized workshop.

I hve tried a Protest (Brazilian consumer protection organization) mediation, but Apple did not respond. My next step will be to start a complain process at the Decon (Brazilian state consumer protection service).

Thank you for your follow up response because it gives me some hope that Apple may step up about the logic board failure on the MacBook Pro too. I’d be curious how different the logic boards between the Air and Pro are beyond the processors. I do it recall now but after some searching I found where someone had gone to the effort to repair rather than replace the board and I recall it was a very simple inexpensive part that had failed.

@hiltonjunior and the others with similar logic board failures on 2018 MacBook Pros I am sorry to hear there are others struggling like me with the cost of repairing their Macs out of warranty. For hiltonjunior it looks like you were in warranty until the last failure. Even with warrantied repairs you are out the use of your computer until it is repaired or replaced. For any concerned I still have not repaired or replaced my 2018 but still successfully using my 2015 MacBook Pro. I guess there is consolation that my MacBook Pro 2015 is such a reliable unit. I still want to get a newer unit and now with the M1 I wonder if I dare go for a 1st generation model.

I have the same problem: 2018 macbook pro ssd failed after very light use. Thankfully I have applecare but the problem is you have to send out entire computer if you want to attempt data recovery from a third party. (yes I know we should have backed it up) but the reason I am writing this is SSD's do fail and fail often-maybe not as much as old spinning drives but they do fail and fail often. This is my second SSD failure this year in my family. Most people have macs for more than 5 years. I would vote to not have ssd soldered on logic board. I own 3 macs and 3 windows machines. The ability to upgrade on a PC is quite nice. I was shocked at Apple service center that I have to put back in a 1tb ssd and have no option to upgrade. I would be even more upset if I was paying for the repair given the decline in ssd prices over the last few years.

I am genuinely sorry you have had such Bad Luck. There is nothing Readers can do to repair your confidence in the product except to assure you that your single sample does NOT represent a TREND.

Apple made around 20 million Macs last year, and your bad experience with a sample of one does not move the needle on reliability in the slightest. It is not statistically significant.

When Consumer Reports magazine polls their members in their annual survey, Apple computers and Apple service have been the highest rated (compared to any other company) for many years running.

Entendi Murilo,
