iPad via HDMI to monitor, no sound

Hi all I have the newer iPad (A1893) and I tried connecting it to an external 4K LG monitor.

The video works fine but I can’t get the audio to play out of the iPad. Which is frustrating because I got the Apple HDMI adapter for this.

What’s weird is FaceTime will play back audio via the iPad while connected to the monitor but not Zoom, YouTube etc.

Has anyone found a workaround to this?

Trying to enable this so my kid who is doing remote school doesn’t have to stare down at the small iPad screen all day.

Hi Guys,

I realize this post is old, but I will leave here a solution that works for me (to get the sound through your bluetooth speakers).

With the iPad connected to the external screen, scroll down your IPad screen to access the Control Centre, and in the music/sound box, press the Airplay button. You should then see an option to switch to your speakers/headphones.

I am attaching a photo for more clarity...

Good Luck :)

I finally found how to make this work, my goal was to be able to connect my Bluetooth headphones while using an external display with my iPad air 4. It didn't work in the beginning so I started playing around with the settings and it's kinda hidden feature in the control panel. When you swipe down at the right top corner it shows u some settings, tap on the music controls on the top right corner, that will take you further and show you your media controlls. Tap on the white signal thing. There you can change output audio device. I changed it from my USB C hub to my headphones and it finally works! Hope u can understand my introductions 😭😬

This is called a programming Turkey. When something obvious is completely missing.

The option to output audio to any desired device, is a necessity, particularly to the iPad itself.

With so many options available, such as what I just installed; an iPad with external display which has no speaker, for my mom. I can not be adding elaborate Bluetooth speakers or headphones to this rig. It needs to be simple.

The USB-C Adapter I have is the Apple brand, I should have the option to output Video through HDMI and Audio through the originating iPad Mini.

This is simply absurd.

On your iPad - pull down the control center, click the little “audio broadcast” icon (triangle with waves emulating from it) in the playback control box, and click on “iPad” to force the sound and mic to be from the iPad

The icon won’t appear when you’re not connected to any additional sound output device, FYI.

SOLVED: I use my iPad Pro 12.9. to display content on my Samsung TV that is older and has no built-in Airplay or Google Chromecast. I connect my iPad Pro to the TV with a USB-C to HDMI adapter and then to the TV using an HDMI cable. For Sound, I use an external Bluetooth speaker. Bluetooth Headset should work also.

Before I connect the adapter to the iPad I first start playing any music on the Apple Music player app on the iPad, then I plug in the USB-C end of the adapter into the iPad. The display ports immediately to the TV screen but no sound. I can still see the Apple Music player on my TV screen but no sound. Look on the lower left area of the iPad screen and touch the audio output icon and choose your Bluetooth player that was already connected to your iPad and was playing music before you plugged in the adapter. Once you choose that device the sound will go back to that device and the TV will still project whatever is being displayed from the iPad. YouTube, photos from the iPad Pro, etc

Audio Output Icon. It may not be red on your iPad screen. Possible white.

Trust me guys Even I was faced with a similar situation

buying new HDMI and trying to connect to the monitor everything

Video is playing but no audio and the disappointment which followed …

and then I stumbled upon this website and I saw many people had the similar issues

when I followed one of the advice which was basically to click through Airplay icon on the top right hand side of your iPad And to select the Bluetooth speaker / AirPod option Because since your monitor would not have audio output functionality , you will need an external audio source And Eureka moment !!! It worked

I had the same problem with my iPad Pro 12.9” so I purchased the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter and just plugged a USB Bluetooth adapter in and it automatically connected to my Bluetooth speaker. Works perfect with my Jabra Speak 710. It also works with wired USB speakers too (Jabra Speak 710). Hope this is helpful.

I think I have a solution.

I had the same issues trying to connect my 2020 iPad Pro 12” to my TV. Every time I connected via my 9 port JCPal adapter with an HDMI cable, the video would work but no sound. I noted that in my control centre the the sound bar indicated I was using headphones. Therefore no sound out of my iPad or through to the TV.

BUT if I had the stream running on my iPad and had all cables connected except for one. The last connection of my HDMI cable to my TV port. The iPad suddenly recognized the TV and sound came through. When I go to my control centre the sound bar indicated I was connected to a monitor or in my case a TV.

give it a go.

Hi

I've managed to connect and get audio.

I have an old Ipad and blue tooth speaker, a new HP monitor, HDM cable and white apple adaptor to connect HDM cable to Ipad.

First connect the speaker via blue tooth to the Ipad.

Once speaker recognised and connected, connect the Ipad to the monitor using HDM cable and adaptor.

Now swipe up from the bottom of the Ipad and switch airplay on (choosing and linking your blue tooth speaker).

Hope it works for you.

Hi,

for me its the same problem.

i have iPad Pro 2020 11“, Apple hdmi adapter, BenQ 4K Monitor without internal speakers.

when i connect to hdmi the sound from the internal iPad-speakers turns of, also on bluetooth-headphone.

the volume bar in the control-Center turns into a fully white bar , named „iPad“, but isnt adjustable.

how can i use this „pro“ called bug for video conference with monitor and internal speakers?

hope there is an update soon , that will fix this

Restarting the pad , to connect to bluetooth-audio, is no solution for me. I bought good internal speakers and they should work.

is there a possibility to send this bug to Apple?

cheers

I have same issue (apple HDMI adapter to HDMI cable to TV will play ipad on TV but no sound on TV, although I get sound on iPad -- I'd like to watch (and hear!!!) youtube, amazon, zoom, skype, etc.)

I've read through all of the three pages of posts and have not found a solution. I've tried different HDMI cables, I've bought more Apple brand HDMI connectors. Nothing works. Ironically, I got it to work right at the beginning of the Covid lockdown, but have not gotten it to work since.

This is clearly an Apple problem not driving the sound to the HDMI cable. (have the same problem with our big screen TV, the kids TV, and the Monitor in my office).

APPLE, please fix this!!!!!!!

It would be nice if someone from Apple actually read these posts and gave us a solution.

I am having the same issue. iPad Pro 11” connected via USB-C cable to an external screen (4K ThinkVision) that has no built-in speakers.

There is no sound on the iPad. In the ControlCenter/Sound/Music I can choose other devices for sound streaming, but not the iPad itself! This is quite a bummer. I cannot turn off the “Dock Connector” in the AirPlay options, but I could pick any another sound device. But I want the sound to play on the iPad. That is an iOS bug IMHO.

Is this an intended design to make us all buy BT headphones ????
