iPad via HDMI to monitor, no sound

Hi all I have the newer iPad (A1893) and I tried connecting it to an external 4K LG monitor.

The video works fine but I can’t get the audio to play out of the iPad. Which is frustrating because I got the Apple HDMI adapter for this.

What’s weird is FaceTime will play back audio via the iPad while connected to the monitor but not Zoom, YouTube etc.

Has anyone found a workaround to this?

Trying to enable this so my kid who is doing remote school doesn’t have to stare down at the small iPad screen all day.

On your iPad - pull down the control center, click the little “audio broadcast” icon (triangle with waves emulating from it) in the playback control box, and click on “iPad” to force the sound and mic to be from the iPad

The icon won’t appear when you’re not connected to any additional sound output device, FYI.

I think I have a solution.

I had the same issues trying to connect my 2020 iPad Pro 12” to my TV. Every time I connected via my 9 port JCPal adapter with an HDMI cable, the video would work but no sound. I noted that in my control centre the the sound bar indicated I was using headphones. Therefore no sound out of my iPad or through to the TV.

BUT if I had the stream running on my iPad and had all cables connected except for one. The last connection of my HDMI cable to my TV port. The iPad suddenly recognized the TV and sound came through. When I go to my control centre the sound bar indicated I was connected to a monitor or in my case a TV.

give it a go.

I finally found how to make this work, my goal was to be able to connect my Bluetooth headphones while using an external display with my iPad air 4. It didn't work in the beginning so I started playing around with the settings and it's kinda hidden feature in the control panel. When you swipe down at the right top corner it shows u some settings, tap on the music controls on the top right corner, that will take you further and show you your media controlls. Tap on the white signal thing. There you can change output audio device. I changed it from my USB C hub to my headphones and it finally works! Hope u can understand my introductions 😭😬

Trust me guys Even I was faced with a similar situation

buying new HDMI and trying to connect to the monitor everything

Video is playing but no audio and the disappointment which followed …

and then I stumbled upon this website and I saw many people had the similar issues

when I followed one of the advice which was basically to click through Airplay icon on the top right hand side of your iPad And to select the Bluetooth speaker / AirPod option Because since your monitor would not have audio output functionality , you will need an external audio source And Eureka moment !!! It worked

Hi

I've managed to connect and get audio.

I have an old Ipad and blue tooth speaker, a new HP monitor, HDM cable and white apple adaptor to connect HDM cable to Ipad.

First connect the speaker via blue tooth to the Ipad.

Once speaker recognised and connected, connect the Ipad to the monitor using HDM cable and adaptor.

Now swipe up from the bottom of the Ipad and switch airplay on (choosing and linking your blue tooth speaker).

Hope it works for you.

Hi Guys,

I realize this post is old, but I will leave here a solution that works for me (to get the sound through your bluetooth speakers).

With the iPad connected to the external screen, scroll down your IPad screen to access the Control Centre, and in the music/sound box, press the Airplay button. You should then see an option to switch to your speakers/headphones.

I am attaching a photo for more clarity...

Good Luck :)

SOLVED: I use my iPad Pro 12.9. to display content on my Samsung TV that is older and has no built-in Airplay or Google Chromecast. I connect my iPad Pro to the TV with a USB-C to HDMI adapter and then to the TV using an HDMI cable. For Sound, I use an external Bluetooth speaker. Bluetooth Headset should work also.

Before I connect the adapter to the iPad I first start playing any music on the Apple Music player app on the iPad, then I plug in the USB-C end of the adapter into the iPad. The display ports immediately to the TV screen but no sound. I can still see the Apple Music player on my TV screen but no sound. Look on the lower left area of the iPad screen and touch the audio output icon and choose your Bluetooth player that was already connected to your iPad and was playing music before you plugged in the adapter. Once you choose that device the sound will go back to that device and the TV will still project whatever is being displayed from the iPad. YouTube, photos from the iPad Pro, etc

Audio Output Icon. It may not be red on your iPad screen. Possible white.

I was able to use audio on my iPad Pro 11” 2020 with bluetooth headphones. I’m using the 27GN950 LG monitor with a USB-C to HDMI for the iPad Pro. I went to the settings of the iPad and under display and brightness I had the option of the monitor name and changed the setting under this to “Allow display mode changes”, and was able to now connect Bluetooth headphones and listen to audio with headphones. I was also searching for a way to listen to audio; however, my monitors do not have speakers. But this was a way around it with headphones. Hopes this helps for everyone also searching to listen to their audio from a display. If you have Bluetooth speakers, it works the same way. For example, my MX speakers.

Here's some info that I found that worked for me. I'll simply quote them here :

" ... in the end it was my iPad set to mute. If you swipe up there is an icon of a bell which mine was set to mute. Unchecked this and I got sound. Hope it helps."

And for those with a mute toggle switch:

"... the mute button was turned on. As several have mentioned. It’s the little switch above the volume control buttons on the upper left side of the phone. All's well"

I feel your pain. When a VGA cable from the monitor to the IPad adaptor is used the sound on the IPad returns. However, the VGA resolution transferred to the monitor creates a problem. DP (Display Port) may be the answer. I don’t have a DP port on my USB C adaptor to confirm that this works but DP delivers audio only as does VGA. Since the IPad was not sending audio to the monitor it is retained the audio source we the PAD. The audio will play to AirPods with the HDMI capable plugged in.
