iPad via HDMI to monitor, no sound

Hi all I have the newer iPad (A1893) and I tried connecting it to an external 4K LG monitor.

The video works fine but I can’t get the audio to play out of the iPad. Which is frustrating because I got the Apple HDMI adapter for this.

What’s weird is FaceTime will play back audio via the iPad while connected to the monitor but not Zoom, YouTube etc.

Has anyone found a workaround to this?

Trying to enable this so my kid who is doing remote school doesn’t have to stare down at the small iPad screen all day.

Hi Guys,

I realize this post is old, but I will leave here a solution that works for me (to get the sound through your bluetooth speakers).

With the iPad connected to the external screen, scroll down your IPad screen to access the Control Centre, and in the music/sound box, press the Airplay button. You should then see an option to switch to your speakers/headphones.

I am attaching a photo for more clarity...

Good Luck :)

I think I have a solution.

I had the same issues trying to connect my 2020 iPad Pro 12” to my TV. Every time I connected via my 9 port JCPal adapter with an HDMI cable, the video would work but no sound. I noted that in my control centre the the sound bar indicated I was using headphones. Therefore no sound out of my iPad or through to the TV.

BUT if I had the stream running on my iPad and had all cables connected except for one. The last connection of my HDMI cable to my TV port. The iPad suddenly recognized the TV and sound came through. When I go to my control centre the sound bar indicated I was connected to a monitor or in my case a TV.

give it a go.

Hi

I've managed to connect and get audio.

I have an old Ipad and blue tooth speaker, a new HP monitor, HDM cable and white apple adaptor to connect HDM cable to Ipad.

First connect the speaker via blue tooth to the Ipad.

Once speaker recognised and connected, connect the Ipad to the monitor using HDM cable and adaptor.

Now swipe up from the bottom of the Ipad and switch airplay on (choosing and linking your blue tooth speaker).

Hope it works for you.

joys of IT.

As previous replies I also have an old Ipad and blue tooth Sonos speaker, a Samsung monitor, HDM cable and white Lightening Digital AV adapter to connect HDM cable to Ipad.

Depends what I am doing determines where the sound comes out either IPad or Sonos speakers. Also at times the picture only appears in larger monitor I lose picture from IPad. Tried connecting to my TV and same issue -It’s inconsistent and frustrating.

I can’t get Zoom or Skype audio to work to anything other than iPad. So for elderly relatives they struggle with sound quality. They can see better with larger monitors or the telly, but lack of better audio this is frustrating. Surely there must be a solution, that doesn’t involve more cables and plugs?

If playing a music video off YouTube, then sound comes thru the Sonos beautifully.

If anyone has any success or solutions for the Zoom/ Skype calls would appreciate knowing?

hey ho

Hi,

for me its the same problem.

i have iPad Pro 2020 11“, Apple hdmi adapter, BenQ 4K Monitor without internal speakers.

when i connect to hdmi the sound from the internal iPad-speakers turns of, also on bluetooth-headphone.

the volume bar in the control-Center turns into a fully white bar , named „iPad“, but isnt adjustable.

how can i use this „pro“ called bug for video conference with monitor and internal speakers?

hope there is an update soon , that will fix this

Restarting the pad , to connect to bluetooth-audio, is no solution for me. I bought good internal speakers and they should work.

is there a possibility to send this bug to Apple?

cheers

We have a similar problem.

We just bought a new iPad Air + USB-C Apple AV Adapter with the intention of sending both video and audio to a large TV in a gym so that we can have remote personal trainers instructing a gym class via Google Meet.

When we connect the Apple AV Connector the iPad screen is mirrored to the TV fine.

YouTube via Safari plays video and audio to the TV great.

However any actual app like Google Meet will only send the video to the TV, the audio comes out of the iPad. This is terrible in a gym setting when the presenters voice is squeaking out the iPad instead of the big TV speakers.

If we pull down from the top right corner of the iPad screen, the audio only has "iPad" as an option.

Is there a way to allow Apps such as the Google Meet App to send both Video and Audio down the Apple USB-C HDMI AV Adapter?

Many thanks if you have a solution.

Hello Abem,

Thank you for providing that additional information. If the iPad is recognizing that an alternate audio source is available let's see if we're able to switch to the iPad from the Control Center. You can find the steps on how to switch in the section titled 'Audio' of the following article: Access and customize Control Center on your iPad

Take care.

Happy 2021 all. Hope this solution helps.

Had a iPad Air 4 connecting to a 4K HDMI monitor using Belkin USB-C to HDMI adaptor and Belkin HDMI cables purchased from Apple store.

Sound works well with AirPods Pro. And my wife and I also tried connecting 2 AirPods Pro to the iPad and it works perfectly as well.

Just bring the 2nd AirPods Pro near and follow the iPad on screen instruction and you would have 2 AirPods Pro connected easily.

Sharing a screenshot of the 2nd AirPods Pro being shared.

hope this solve the problem.

I was able to use audio on my iPad Pro 11” 2020 with bluetooth headphones. I’m using the 27GN950 LG monitor with a USB-C to HDMI for the iPad Pro. I went to the settings of the iPad and under display and brightness I had the option of the monitor name and changed the setting under this to “Allow display mode changes”, and was able to now connect Bluetooth headphones and listen to audio with headphones. I was also searching for a way to listen to audio; however, my monitors do not have speakers. But this was a way around it with headphones. Hopes this helps for everyone also searching to listen to their audio from a display. If you have Bluetooth speakers, it works the same way. For example, my MX speakers.

Here's some info that I found that worked for me. I'll simply quote them here :

" ... in the end it was my iPad set to mute. If you swipe up there is an icon of a bell which mine was set to mute. Unchecked this and I got sound. Hope it helps."

And for those with a mute toggle switch:

"... the mute button was turned on. As several have mentioned. It’s the little switch above the volume control buttons on the upper left side of the phone. All's well"

I feel your pain. When a VGA cable from the monitor to the IPad adaptor is used the sound on the IPad returns. However, the VGA resolution transferred to the monitor creates a problem. DP (Display Port) may be the answer. I don’t have a DP port on my USB C adaptor to confirm that this works but DP delivers audio only as does VGA. Since the IPad was not sending audio to the monitor it is retained the audio source we the PAD. The audio will play to AirPods with the HDMI capable plugged in.

I have the same problem. It is frustratingly intermittent. For months and months I am able to use a Bluetooth speaker for sound while my iPad mini is connected to a monitor via HDMI cable. Then, suddenly, that combination ceases to work. The Bluetooth speaker appears in the list of connected devices, but it’s icon does not appear in the top right corner of the screen where it usually does. And there is no sound from either the Bluetooth speaker or the iPad. When I disconnect the HDMI cable, the Bluetooth speaker works fine. Note: a recent iOS update can NOT be the problem. This iPad is still on 13.4.1. My suspicion (and hope) is this will resolve itself once again after I repeatedly disconnect, shut down the monitor and speaker, and reboot the iPad.

I'm glad I'm not going crazy and the only one experiencing this issue. I have an iPad Pro 12" (2018) and multiple USB-C adapters to connect to my LG TV. I am attempting to watch Apple TV shows via iPad on my TV. There's video but no sound.

I've tried

a. multiple adapters

b. powering on/off iPad/TV

c. control center (as suggested in earlier replies)

d. bluetooth

Nothing seems to work.

However, there are times when audio does come through but no dialogue. This is terribly frustrating and annoying for something that should just work --- easily! What a huge miss for Apple. I'm surprised by how long this has been an issue. I welcome any more ideas.
