iPhone XS screen right side not responding for touching

Hi! Ever since I upgraded to 13.6.1 my screen’s right side faults to respond touching . It’s very strange because it doesn’t work all across the edge straight from the bottom to the top (see the screenshot, I tried to fill a note with a pencil). I actually have to flip my phone and type horizontally because the buttons on the right aren’t reachable.

Yesterday I tried switching the screen to larger mode in the settings and then switched back to standard and it helped for a while. But then it failed again and remains unresponsive until now. Any ideas what it could be caused by and what should I do now? I didn’t go for repairs service yet cause it doesn’t look like a hardware issue. Thanks!

Had the same issue after the ios 14 update. Cant type P or 0 or basically anything along the right side of the screen on my XS. Apple store said to restore the phone as new and not from a backup. Ill wait for the next update before I mess with that. They also suggested replacing the screen... no thanks since it was perfectly fine before the update.

Apple service providers charge $279 however I went with a 3rd party retail shop. Cost me $200. My screen has been working flawless since the repair. I'm hoping Apple catches onto this issue which was similar to the Iphone X display replacement program where they offered refunds for people that used out of pocket funds for the repair. This is the first time Ive every had a problem with an Iphone.

I have discovered something interesting. Cooling the phone might resolve the issue temporarily.

Today i got my phone back from a service that claimed it needed a new screen. When it arrived it was very cold.

I turned it on to see if the issue is still present and it was, but after a couple of minutes, when the phone started getting warmer, the affected side started working again. Sadly after a couple of minutes it stopped working.

BUT I was able to reproduce this effect by putting it in the fridge for a couple of minutes. When i took it out i kept drawing on the notes app and to my surprise it started working again.

P.S. Be careful how long you leave your phone in the fridge for. I am not responsible if you break your phone lol.

Hello renatolla,

We understand that the right side of your iPhone is not responding to touch. You’re in the right place, we’d be glad to assist in seeking a solution.

You have taken some great troubleshooting steps so far, but make sure to follow all of the steps here: If the screen isn’t working on your iPhone or iPad

If those do not help, it may be a hardware issue.

Have a great day.

I have the same issue. I called customer service and they asked me to go to an Apple store. Today i went the the Genius bar in World Trade Center, New York City and they said it was a hardware issue and they can fix it if I pay $275 to replace the screen. I asked them that, in this thread, there are over 120+ "i have this problem too" complaining for the same issue since Aug 21, 2020, i.e. in less than 4 months, how do you know it is not a product defect but my fault causing it, so I have to take the cost of fixing it? The guy at Genius bar just said "it is not my job answering you this question. You need to call customer service again to reflect this to the engineering team. It is not my job to reflect this". He also said, "obviously this issue is not widespread enough for Apple to give you a free replacement. We cannot give you a lenience.". I argued back that "I'm not even asking for a lenience at all, I want to make sure there is a channel Apple can know its potential product defect, rather than having consumer suffer from it and fix it at their own cost. In this thread all the complains are about the same model having the same issue and this not normal to me at all. I bought my iPhone 256GB really expecting to use it for more than 3 years, and now less than 2 years I cannot use it any more. I didn't do anything about it and it just suddenly happened, and I do see it as a product quality issue rather than my fault." I do encourage everyone seeing this problem here to REPORT your issue to customer service to make them aware. As long as they notice that it is a widespread issue, they might have a free replacement or recall, just like what they did for iPhone X or 11.

Same issue for me, about a 1cm strip down the right side that is unresponsive, and has occurred 3 time - all of which were just after running an update (first was after upgrading to ios 14), most recently to 14.3. Tried removing case, screen protector, warming phone, hard resets, restoring to factory settings, and restoring from backups, none of which resolved the issue. Both of the times it happened before, it seemed to resolve itself after about 1-2weeks.

This time it has been about 3 days since it happened. I tried calling Apple and was told that it is a hardware issue (potentially caused by a software update that is interacting with the hardware or that may not be compatible), and would cost the same as a new phone to get it repaired... Disappointed with the response and lack of accountability for validating their software and products, but also not paying $800 to repair an old phone so wasn't much to do. I am hoping it will resolve itself again in a few days, and then will be turning off automatic updates.

My XS did this in Feb 2020 and because I had AppleCare when I brought it in they just replaced the screen and charged me $29, the problem was gone...until yesterday. Randomly (did not drop, get wet or anything), the exact same problem came back. I took it to BestBuy authorized repair and they wanted to change the screen again and charge me because the warranty is up - no way. I have an appointment at the apple store today and if they cannot confirm 100% that it is a screen failure I will be requesting the phone be sent to their repair center for diagnosis - this is what the second level tech support suggested.

There is no way that this is a hardware issue.

This started happening to me with my Xs. A few days later is resolved itself only to start again a few days after that.

I set my keyboard to left handed and that got me by for a while. With the new iOS update it solved the problem again. Only for it to return again after a few days.

I changed some settings which seemed to help. Stopped using dark mode and turned off bold text. Haven’t had the issue for a good while now.

The operating system (software) has to interact with the screen (hardware) somehow. The screen detects touch and sends information to the operating system to know what to do with that touch input. The opposite could also be true, where an operating system bug, disables the touch sensor on part of the screen. The fact that this is surging in recent months and especially Jan 2021, and the fact that the unresponsive strip is moving around the screen for some people and randomly fixing itself for others makes this look like os-level software issues.

Hey!!

I have an iPhone x with the same problem.

i would like to share some information I have gathered till now and according to my knowledge

  1. It's definitely a software issue!
  2. the occurrences of this problem also depends on the temperatures maybe cold or hot.

Temporary hack for me:

  1. For me It can be solved by turning on or off the dark mode just selecting the opposite theme make things better for me
  2. Making phone hot or cold by running apps or freezing it in the freezer.
  3. keeping the phone aside and letting the phone heal itself.
  4. When trying the unresponsive keyboard letter for example letter P a lot of times, as soon as p clicks continue with other letter as normal typing rather than testing the p again and again.

Also please upvote this so that our other fellows can also know about this hack and skip the display changing costs!!!

i'm also attaching some screen shots of before and after which is denoted by black and green

Last But Not The Least

Apple's a *****!!! the quality they serve now is pathetic! Cannot be worse than this, I got an iPhone x but the the program for my model has long been expired as it says 3 years from first retail!

It isn't my fault then why should i pay for it! Even why should I suffer for it! My whole family uses apple and among them why I'm the only unlucky person!

It was lot better until SOMEONE came and replaced Steve!
