How to display clip durations in iMovie 10.1.15?

Hi all, just updated to iMovie 10.1.15 and whereas before when you hovered the mouse over a clip in the timeline it showed the clip duration in the top left corner of the clip, it now shows the clip name, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Any ideas how to get it to revert back to its old behaviour?

Thanks, Tim

You are welcome. It is puzzling why the handy feature of duration display on the clip would be eliminated. It might be just an unintentional glitch in the software that possibly will be cured in a later update.

Or it can simply be a corrupt preference, that can happen sometimes with updates. You might try deleting preferences and see if that cures it. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. See if the display is any different.

Hi, Tim,

I don't use that version of iMovie so can't speak directly to the issue that you mention.

However, if you click on the information button (the one that is a circle with an "i" in it) in the tool bar at the top right of your screen, a duration box will appear just below and to the right. Then, every time that you click on a clip in the timeline its duration will be displayed in the duration box. At least, it works that way on my computer. Maybe a little more useful than a "chocolate teapot". :)

One encouraging thing about this update and using the information button is that there was a long term problem of it showing the duration of a clip in seconds only. Times there are now displayed in minutes AND seconds (when applicable). For the longest time (years), I only saw seconds. Anything over 59 seconds would be described as 135 seconds or whatever. Not very useful to us humans. Now, it shows seconds or minutes and seconds (when applicable). I think it is still using 10ths of minutes for the fractions of minutes. It wold be more useful for it to show seconds when there is more than a minute as normal time increments of 1/01 to 59. Maybe we'll get there someday.
