iPhone 7 Plus Camera won't take pictures & calls can't be heard.

I have a number of odd things happening with my iPhone 7 Plus:

  • Camera will open, but will not take a picture or video regardless of which button is pushed
  • Telephone calls can be answered, but no sound is heard on the phone via speaker or holding the phone to my ear. If connected to airpods, the phone can be used without problems.
  • Amazon Music app opens with a brief red bar at the top of the screen, but when a song is selected, the app indicates there is a playback error and quits.
  • The touchscreen becomes unresponsive at times.

All of these problems are temporarily solved by shutting down and restarting the phone. I can't figure out exactly when or what happens to trigger these problems again, but usually within an hour of restarting the phone, all of these problems reoccur.

I have reset all network settings, reset and reinstalled the phone from a backup and tried just about everything else I've been able to think of or find online.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 13

Hey CH_NB_A,

We understand that you're experiencing multiple issues with your iPhone, and we will do our best to assist.

Since you have gone through troubleshooting steps such as resetting network settings and restoring from a backup, the next steps is to restore to factory settings. Restoring to factory settings remove all data from the iPhone and installs a fresh copy of the software.

Prior to restoring, make sure that you have a recent backup. After restoring to factory settings, set up the device as new and confirm resolution before restoring the backup.

Take care.

Came across an interesting maybe fix. First off all the same symptoms. No mic function, camera app wouldn’t take pictures, 3rd party slow motion app would work either….. etc. on google it suggested to do a voice recording to test function. Mine didn’t work just static. My wife suggested to see if Siri worked. Nope. Then bam. Possibly found work around to get all to work.

I had the ‘Hey Siri’ function off. Never liked the idea of her listening and phone responding if I said that. But never the less, enabled it and when thru the setup, and now everything works. I can take pictures, use Siri, make phone calls without air buds, 3rd party app works. So far everything appears to function. This is not a hardware problem, it is definitely a software issue. And to note, it took a couple tries to get Siri to start recognizing me speaking, but then took of and let the setup finish and all works. Even without doing a hard reboot (power and down buttons). Now granted, it’s only been a few mins but thought I would share.

The 14.4 upgrade did not help me at all. In fact, I think it started happening to me AFTER the upgrade.

I'm getting my battery replaced to see if that fixes it. I'll let y'all know how that goes.

In case it helps others, I noticed that after I turned it off, pulled the SIM card out, turned it back on, deleted a bunch of accounts and apps (to make sure my password managers etc. are protected), turned it off, put the SIM card back in, and turned it back on, it hasn't happened in about 18 hours. Previously it was happening every four or five hours. It might be worth trying just shutting it off, taking out the SIM card, turning it back on, and then repeating the process to put the SIM card back in. (It may not be safe to replace the SIM card while it's on.)

That said, my battery life is atrocious now, and the phone is still great in every other way, so I'm hoping the battery replacement will give it a new lease on life.

I have these same issues on an iphone 7 (not plus).

I was told that the call dropping/sound issues are caused by a loose sound chip which only 3rd parties can now replace, I haven't done this because I can't afford to pay €100 right now but have to just use it with bluetooth headphones. Very annoying.

The camera issue for me is solved by using a 3rd party camera app. Totally stupid, and definitely a software issue. Updating to 14.2 has made it worse if anything.

Apple please patch this in an update!
