Battery drain after iOS 14 update.

I had installed the new ios 14 and my battery drained from 90% to 10% without me even touching the phone. This has never happened before.

Please Apple fix asap.

There is a software issue and this has affected more than 10,000 of iPhones. It’s not something we are doing wrong. Apple needs to fix this ASAP! Or refund us all 1,000$ We pay good money for their products because they’re reliable. This is absolutely insane 😡

I, for one, solved my severe battery drain issue. Completely. With certainty. Without reverting to factory settings. I am fairly certain mine was a niche issue.

I knew, through repeated trials, if my iPhone7+ was in Airplane Mode my battery held a charge overnight. Watching my DSL modem while controlling for other household device activity on the Internet, if I disconnected my phone from wifi the Internet activity immediately stopped. Clearly my phone issue was Internet access-related. I also knew from an iPhone monitor app that there was a defined periodicity to some low-level (i.e., a couple of KBs/sec) Internet accesses.

Assuming the activity was iCloud sync, I started disconnecting Apple devices from my router. Unplugging the Apple TV3 slowed, and somewhat stopped, the Internet activity at the modem. Plugging it back in--the rapid activity started. I left my Apple TV3 off, kept my phone on wifi overnight, and my battery decline diminished. The no-Apps-running-attributed decline was still there, but MUCH MUCH MUCH better; however, still 25-40% overnight.

Having now lost my TV3 HomeKit hub, I bought a HomePod mini. Overnight, my iPhone battery dropped LESS THAN 10%!!! Same for the next night. And the next night. PROBLEM SOLVED for me.

I believe my Apple TV3 and iPhone7+ were trying repeatedly and unsuccessfully to sync HomeKit data. Disabling the Apple TV3 forced some unilateral control to the iPhone. Having no aged, HomeKit hub to sync with, it was happy with what it saw as HomeKit reality.

Adding the HomePod seemed to take HomeKit activity off the phone and, the HomePod was able to sync and operate successfully with the IOS 14.3 iPhone. This is all my conjecture absent any "useful" replies (I gave up when I kept getting suggestions for what to do in tvOS) help from Apple. It's been several days now and I am comfortable relaying my battery drain resolution.

RECOMMENDATION: Try putting your phone in Airplane Mode overnight to see if Internet activity (any kind even if you do not have HomeKit) from your phone is the source of your battery drain. It may be iCloud related, who knows. If the phone does hold a charge in Airplane Mode overnight (btw, I kept Bluetooth on for Apple watch and AutoSleep), look for aberrant Internet activity somehow.

I have had the same loss of power problem with my iPhone battery since I updated to 14. I go for an hours walk each day and in that hour my phone goes from 100% to 2%.

I have however managed to overcome the battery drain problem by going into Setting - Safari - and clearing history and website data before I go for my walk and leave google closed.

Great suggestions re: clearing safari and closing google. It hasn’t solved the issue of the lightning fast incredible battery drain from 100% to 2% that happens right before my eyes , but at least it’s one less thing that adds to it. I sure hope the Apple folks get out a fix for this issue soon... I’d really like to avoid the hassle of moving over to Samsung....

I called Apple support a few weeks ago about this issue and she had me reset my phone, which helped somewhat. The battery strength no longer dropped from 100 to 10 in a couple of hours when the phone wasn't being used and constantly charged. Instead, it would only decrease to about 50% as long as I wasn't using it. Unfortunately, the solution didn't last and it's back to the massive drain.

I had a battery drop suddenly again, when it was very cold in the room. Already did a factory reset and changed the battery at an Applestore. Cold might be a problem. I checked what app was using a lot of resources, and find out the weather widget was in trouble. I removed the widget and minimized all the others. Then I find out that Siri was using a lot of resources. So I almost removed every Siri involvement on the iphone. I also turned wifi off, to check if more battery power can be saved. Bluetooth stays always on because of its low power usage. Now it runs 4 days idle. When I charge the iphone I do this in a relative warmed up room.

Normally I’d agree that this is a way to get us to upgrade through battery degradation but there are so many of us with this now- my friend has a really new phone (got it last year & is one generation older iPhone - so just before the 12) and his phone is having Exactly the same issue as my older phone.... both were working fine until the ios14 install(s). It feels like a case of Apple not having done a full and correct impact analysis before pushing this out. I am blown away that they did this in the middle of the pandemic. Remember that This isn’t the first time they’ve had iOS issues... it’s just been long enough thst we got lulled into assuming all was/is running smoothly .

Striving for yet another ios next year number 15, it will be a lot of work to comlete. Apple has more and more products that needs to work seamless together. Maybe the people who own there device should have an option to bail out of a brand new ios again and again. An option to get security updates, no force for a new one. Will be a good one, while the race for another os continues. Or bring the aim down to a new os once in tree years, maybe once in five to get a better result.

Great question - maybe (?) but the only way I’ve found is to do a manual download (so don’t check the auto download for those updates) and then decide if you want to take the risk (& push through the download yourself). Problem is that you may have to to wait to hear if there’s any blowback before doing that...& we didn’t know about the ios14 issue until it was too late...so...

You are making great points. It’s actually what my friends who having this same battery drain issue are talking about . We’re seriously considering dumping our iPhones. Feeling forced into a consumer corner with this Which kind of hurts to say out loud but this is really a bad thing (My friend used his phone cause he’s self employed. I use it to stay connected to older folks who are struggling with isolation cause of the pandemic).
