I called Apple Support and they told me to do a force restart. Shut down your phone. Wait a few minutes. The press volume up followed by volume down then power key and wait for Apple logo to appear. This resolved my issue and no app freezes since then.

Hi! I was facing certain issues after the iOS14 update. My phone was freezing everytime. Even while capturing photos or screenshots it used to be frozen.
I have updated with iOS 14.0.1 this morning and faced no such issues since.
hoping all these bugs are fixed by this update. Give iOS 14.0.1 a try.
i am 99% sure my back up from iphone 7 was corrupted, and when i was turning on my mac it was truing to sync it and messing with the iphone. My advise is - erase the phone and put it back to factory settings (after syncing contacts and photos to i cloud) restore it to factory settings - and set it up as NEW phone. Should do the trick....
Restarting your phone will help temporarily if you don’t mind doing it daily. Volume up/down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
What worked for me for a couple of weeks (make sure you have a full backup first) was delete the Safari and email apps and all my email accounts, Restore the phone from backup, then reinstall Safari and the Email app, and recreate the email accounts. A pain in the arse, and when you think about it will never be fully effective because you’re restoring the same files that caused the problem in the first place. It worked for about 2 or 3 weeks but now both my iPhone X and iPad are back to where they were after installing IOS14 - laggy and crashing.
One other thing that affects the iphone but not the iPad: after scrolling up and down a webpage in Safari for 5 or 10 seconds or so, instead of continuing to scroll the page it zooms the page instead. Makes no difference if Accessibility/Zoom is switched on or off.
These problems are definitely caused by iOS 14 (both iPhone and iPad were fine on ios13), and it appears that Safari and the Apple email client app have problems too on iOS 14 that make everything else worse.
Very importantly, this issue is caused by iOS 14 and NOT your iPhone or iPad so buying a new phone is not the answer. Unless you buy Android 🤔. There are many posts here and on other sites from folk with iPhone 11 and 12s that suffer this too.
It’s about time Apple fixed it but I’m not sure if they know how.
As I’ve stated previously, this needs to be publicised via socials so please do what you can to spread the word and also report it to Apple technical support. Perhaps if everybody does this Apple will understand the scale of the problem and do something about it!
Ok I think I have found a turnaround for the apps that freeze/hang: delete and reinstall them.
I did it for several browser (Opera Touch, Chrome,...) and miracle, they worked again normally.
So for now, I will test this hypothesis each time I encounter the problem. Next, Instagram
Before you consider upgrading think about the problem a little more. You have an iPhone X which just 3 years ago was marketed as a very expensive cellphone with the latest technology described as ground breaking. The phone, like all the others mentioned in this thread, worked perfectly well on IOS13 - the problems only started since moving to IOS14 (I say ‘moving’ because 14 is certainly not an upgrade because of its many faults). Apple has replaced your phone with another X which suffers exactly the same problems. Therefore, it cannot be the phone that’s the problem.
There are many others on here suffering the same problem with a range of phone models: some are less powerful than X, but owners of 11s and 12s are also suffering. Even buying a new phone doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get the problem again. Therefore, it is very likely that IOS14 has a number of faults that cause the problem.
Now ask yourself why does the problem happen, and there can be 2 answers:
Perhaps Apple is doing it again?
My iPhone X and iPad series 5 have been locking up, and some apps stalling and crashing since changing to iOS 14 when it was released. Performance has been poor too, especially on the iPad, and there are frequent stalls which take 10 seconds or so for the OS to resolve. I’ve tried complete restore from backup and deletion of the apps that suffered most from these problems - Mail and Safari - but the problem persisted. Interestingly, each version iteration since iOS 14 has helped my iPhone regain the performance it had when running iOS 13, but my iPad either continued to perform badly or got worse with each new version. This lead me to believe it was a deliberate action by Apple to slow down older devices as a ploy to encourage users to purchase new replacements.
After installing IOS14.4 on my iPad performance was still terrible especially Mail. I deleted all Mail accounts and the Mail app before rebooting the device, and reinstalled the Mail app. After recreating the accounts things were even worse and all email subject lines were left blank and so email became unusable. This was a common problem when iOS 13 was introduced. Again, I removed email accounts and deleted the app. After reinstalling the app and recreating email accounts Mail is working properly and performance is restored to the level when running iOS 13.
I recommend installing 14.4 then reboot the device. Remove Mail accounts and delete the Mail app. Reboot again. Install the Mail app and recreate email accounts. Like me, you may have to repeat this process a couple of times. I hope it works for you as well as it has for me.
My iPhone X was replaced under Apple care after it had been doing this for some time. It eventually got to a state of being locked all the time. When I got the replacement I was able to get it to reset following the iTunes reset procedure. The new phone it’s also doing it so clearly that proves it iOS as like all other correspondents it was fine under ios11. I have a 12 mini in the house and I have only observed it once momentarily.
one thing I have also noticed with the new x is that sometimes if I turn the screen off and wait for a number of minutes it comes good. Force restart usually works but not always.
lots of colleagues and friends with x and 11 are also reporting similar behaviour. Be nice if we could revert to iOS 11 easily.
i am noting apple seem to have been pushing through 14.n releases but have yet to see a 14.n.x which makes me think they are feature focused rather than Fix focused at the moment.
If you restored from a backup then the backup is corrupt. try setting up as new.
I upgraded from 14.01 to 14.1yesterday and hasn’t frozen once in 24 hours so a huge improvement. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Second time I've posted here. My first post was acidic, and I hated this problem.
Must admit, 14.2 has fixed my issue.
Just shows you how much a simple thing like freezing can affect your day!
Why haven’t you updated to 14.2? It stopped the freezing.
Today I've reinstalled macOS Catalina - and I've forgot about that STUPID indexing on first boot/login which boils CPU and SSD.
And it have me to thing iOS MUST do the same thing - and iMac is on for most of the time (of indexing) while iPhone....... you switch off (sleep) after very short while- not giving it possibility to re index all its mess.
So I've set "NEVER Sleep" option and let iPhone on for about 10 minutes and........... CURRENTLY is all fine - please confirm if it is just me
Software update 14.1 released today. I'm updating now and keeping my fingers crossed. Because freezing makes my iPhone useless as a light switch, navigation software, a remote control, a camera and many other options.
I posted on here awhile back about the freezing on my 11 Pro when I was at my wits end. When I upgraded it initially it was 14.01. (Never got 14.0) About 10 days ago I saw I could go to 14.1. It solved my problems and I’ve had no problems since. Fingers crossed. Hoping this post doesn’t jinx it. ;). I know others are on 14.1 with lots of problems so I don’t know if it’s the actual upgrade or the progression or what. An Apple mystery. You know they have someone following this forum. So not sure what the issue really is or why they aren’t addressing it.
