Hi Gaz
ios14 has introduced many problems on loads of Apple devices. Do you notice most problems in Apple apps? Email and Safari have stalling and crashing problems on my iPhone X and iPad. Both were fine and performed well before changing to IOS14, but moving to the new iOS instantly caused problems. Both have been restored from old backups so it must be the new iOS that’s causing it. There are also 17 pages of issues recorded in this thread! For me, Apple have been very helpful on line and in-store but they weren’t able to resolve It. It’s unlikely to get better with the imminent IOS14.5, and when ios15 appears then it’s likely to be at least based on 14 so probably won’t cure things either. Personally, I believe it’s been deliberately done to encourage people to buy new phones. But because ios14 also causes problems with newer Apple phones as well as those a couple of years old then the reality is that many people are likely to move to Android.
With this issue, I ended up doing a restore on my phone, which, so far, seems to have fixed the issue. Yes, a bit of a pain to redo everything, but worth it. So far I’ve not had any further issues.
I seem to have found a solution
For the problem on both my X and 12 mini on iOS 14.5.1
if I close apps it seems to recover. I suspect there is a memory leak or some other memory management issue
I started experiencing this as well. Eventually iphone x got into a state where it would not respond even after hard restart.
fortunately i have Apple Care and phone was replaced.
Everything was fine for a few weeks and now I am back in the same situation. Phone not responding to even hard restart.
Observations
It seems to randomly occur. apps can sometimes freeze mid use. Often you find it has frozen when you next pick it up from a lock screen. Sometimes if you put it down it recovers after a few minutes to an hour or so inexplicably. A hard restart (vol up vol down then power button held down) will resolve. However eventually it gets into state where if the hard restart will not resolve it you can not resolve.
It eventually gets into a state where it wants you to unlock the phone but of course you can not do this and once there it seems that you can never get out. This is very circular and frustrating. Do I update to a new device such as Iphone 12. It seems i will end up in the same state reading this forum!
But having just gone through 6 hard restarts the last one worked, This is very time consuming.
I did the same a couple of months ago when the freezing problem got on my nerves. I also deleted the apps that were suffering mostly: Mail app and Mail accounts on my iPad and iPhone, and Safari on my iPhone. Restoring the devices, upgrading to the latest iOS version, restoring the apps, and mailboxes helped greatly with the problem, though their performance was nothing like as good as when they were on iOS 13.
Unfortunately since then performance of both devices has declined again to being frustrating to use, so don’t expect anything more than a temporary fix.
IOS14 is to blame - my devices were fine on iOS 13, which suggests to me either Apple is incompetent and can no longer produce good software, or it is a deliberate ploy to slow down older devices just like they did with battery gate.
It’s interesting to find out how widespread this issue is across a range of models.
Yes, when you state “one thing I have also noticed with the new x is that sometimes if I turn the screen off and wait for a number of minutes it comes good.”
This is the same as I stated above ‘You’ll probably find that if an app stalls, pressing the right hand side button and then manually unlocking it again temporarily fixes it,’
You’ll find you don’t have to wait a few minutes, simply locking and unlocking the screen works temporarily.
I have this freeze experience since I was using iphone 6s. Obviously iOS14 wasn't out then. Then when I got my iphone 8+ I experienced the same prior iOS14 and now with iOS14 remain same issue, my phone freeze intermittently. Whenever it freezes I press and hold the power button on right for several seconds, then when it appear a pop up power screen, I will press Home button then iOS will return to a passcode screen. This usually means it clear the memory and freezing should have stopped.
To mitigate the frequency of this happening, I set password to my email (outlook) IOS apps. Each time when I click on outlook it prompted me for touch ID before I am able to read them. It helped for a while initially.
Lately, with iOS14 it happens more frequent I am wondering if I should switch to an Android or newer Iphone. I guess it has nothing to do with my iphone 8+. It's a solid phone. I am not sure the folks in Apple is going give us a solution. But they really need to do something when they charge such high prices for Iphone 12.
Anyway, if it freezes, please try to click and hold on the affected iOS app that froze. For instance, youtube app. Then click on anything but not removing the app, unless you want to reinstall the app. Somehow this tricks work for me as a workaround.
Good luck.
Check this out if it helps. My suspicion is the mail client like your gmail or outlook and you have a lot of emails. Over the time this could cause an intermittent freeze. Try to remove them if possible and monitor see the issue goes away.
good luck.
Not all phones react the same way. You need to start with a forced reboot - Force reboot device - Apple Support
I deleted all the widgets too. Looks like it's doing better.
How long since you updated? I found that it took a while to finish the update in the background so wait a day and see if it is fixed. Mine fixed itself.
14.2 helped. Lagging and hanging is much better and most apps are usable - for me anyway. I'm using a SE 2020.
See if it pops up when you go to settings, general and software update. There should be a 14.2 there. Good luck.
Do you have an Apple Watch connected?
