Face Id not working after iOS 14 update -iPhone X

Hi, my iphone X is suddenly not recognizing my face after the iOS 14 update yesterday. I thought a face id reset will solve the issue, but it is still not working. When trying to set the face id, it is showing the error of ‘move the iphone a little higher/trlower’. Nothing works after multiple attempts. Is this an iOS14 issue?

SOLVED: Hi everyone! I had my appointment with Apple Genius Bar today. This is a faulty hardware issue. This is not related to iOS 14 nor will it be fixed with a new update. Sorry to say you'll have to pay $650 to replace your phone. Luckily I was still under my 1-Year limited warranty. The employee told me there is a chip in the hardware that has failed. Thankfully I walked out with a new phone at no cost. But I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it gives you some answer to this issue.

Unfortunately, this is the best explanation I've heard so far.

Face ID gets set up and the data stored in the phone; the hardware quietly breaks but the phone relies on the existing data; iOS updates and requires new data that can't be acquired with broken hardware; sorry Charlie you have to buy a new phone or get an expensive fix on your old phone.

If that's the case, no iOS update will fix Face ID. And Apple Support isn't misleading us when they say that the iOS 14.0 update didn't break Face ID. And I'm just going to deal with a phone with no Face ID for a few years because the rest of the phone works fine (or so it seems, until the next iOS update...)

(For the most part I don't care. The only thing I really miss is that I have an enormous password for LastPass that I would like to bypass with Face ID, so I can get in and copy some other enormous gibberish password for other sites.)

shame on you apple!

to all left alone customers:

in most cases an update seems to destroy the dot projector, due to over current or over temperature.

As apple hasn’t give a statement until now (30 pages of customer complaints), you should help yourself.

you could replace the dot projector by yourself if you are good at soldering, costs are about 50-80bucks depending on your phone. Dot projector repair tools e.g. luban are found at aliexpress or eBay. Make sure to order your dot projector ic and the programmer.

there are plenty of howtoos on the web.

or you can bring your phone in an phone repair shop (not apple) to let some technician repair your device for about 100-200bucks.

And make sure to not ever buy products from companies who let you down again.

cheers

** Update**

So Originally my face id stopped working which as previously stated apple offered me a replacement phone for €546 which is b***sh1t. so now living without face id for 6 + months my phone now goes into a boot loop and cannot be solved with software fixes as it turns out its a hardware glitch caused by moisture penetrating the earpiece and causing corrosion on the dot projector and or illuminator. have a look at this link to see the fix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM-04aWOVnw

it can be repaired but requires specialist tools and skill. so much for ip67 iPhone X well done apple. you think they could fix it.

I also lost the use of FaceID after the upgrade to iOS 14. Worked with Apple support resetting and factory defaulting with no success.

They made an appointment for me at the Apple Store. Here now and they are telling me that they are showing a hardware error and this is the issue. It’s extremely weird that FaceID has worked up until the upgrade. Of course my extended AppleCare warranty just ran out so it’s out of pocket to fix. This is extremely frustrating.
