Face Id not working after iOS 14 update -iPhone X

Hi, my iphone X is suddenly not recognizing my face after the iOS 14 update yesterday. I thought a face id reset will solve the issue, but it is still not working. When trying to set the face id, it is showing the error of ‘move the iphone a little higher/trlower’. Nothing works after multiple attempts. Is this an iOS14 issue?

Same here on iPhone X. Wiping the phone and restoring from a backup did not help. When setting up, I have the same “move iPhone (...)” messages. It looks like the camera is trying to get a fix, but with no luck.

I've bought iPhone 11 (with iOS 14) with cracked screen - I've replaced it as many times before (I am technician) and....... FaceID is not working!!!!! I was fighting with it for FEW HOURS!!! Trying adjust cameras - flood illuminator - dot projector etc. NOTHING!!!!!!!!

I am 100% sure it was working.


............ and now I see........... THIS thread - hundreds people no FaceID - UNABLE to pay shopping with Apple Pay


It looks NOTHING hanged with Apple since iOS 13 and DOZENS updates till iOS 13 was........... usable :(

I also lost the use of FaceID after the upgrade to iOS 14. Worked with Apple support resetting and factory defaulting with no success.

They made an appointment for me at the Apple Store. Here now and they are telling me that they are showing a hardware error and this is the issue. It’s extremely weird that FaceID has worked up until the upgrade. Of course my extended AppleCare warranty just ran out so it’s out of pocket to fix. This is extremely frustrating.

Yeah I agree. Apple support will ask you to send it in as it comes across as a hardware issue.

However I checked the light sensor (needed to view through another camera) and it works but usually it would flash where as it seems to be a solid light this time round.

Too coincidental that it happens to this many people close to the update. Hopefully Apple picks this issue up sooner rather than later

UPDATE - at the store they set a callback with an Apple Support member. I lucked out with the most knowledgeable, understanding and empathetic support person at Apple I've ever spoken to. He took his time studying the previous chats, calls and store visit notes. He had me perform a bunch of tests including a remote diagnosis where everything came back fine. At this he reviewed my recently expired AppleCare warranty and had me hold so he can speak to a supervisor. He came back on the phone and informed me they would perform a repair/swap as a one-time courtesy.

I solved the problem!!! Face ID relies on input from the face camera AND something called the TrueDepth camera. The true depth camera is a little green light that comes on when needed in the joker right portion of your screen — I think it maybe projects a grid pattern onto your face that aides in capturing the contours of your face. If that little green light (or maybe something near it) is blocked or obscured, faceID can’t gather the data about you face that it needs to work or even to be reset. Simply clean off the area of your screen near the little green light and FaceID will work again!!
