Face Id not working after iOS 14 update -iPhone X

Hi, my iphone X is suddenly not recognizing my face after the iOS 14 update yesterday. I thought a face id reset will solve the issue, but it is still not working. When trying to set the face id, it is showing the error of ‘move the iphone a little higher/trlower’. Nothing works after multiple attempts. Is this an iOS14 issue?

SOLVED: Hi everyone! I had my appointment with Apple Genius Bar today. This is a faulty hardware issue. This is not related to iOS 14 nor will it be fixed with a new update. Sorry to say you'll have to pay $650 to replace your phone. Luckily I was still under my 1-Year limited warranty. The employee told me there is a chip in the hardware that has failed. Thankfully I walked out with a new phone at no cost. But I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it gives you some answer to this issue.

If you still need help, reset Face ID, then set it up again. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and tap Reset Face ID. Then tap Set up Face ID to set it up again. If you can't enroll your face, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider or contact Apple Support.

If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro - Apple ...

I had the same thing happen and the store confirmed I had broken hardware.

Despite being broken, the FaceId continued to work since I had a stored detailed picture for the comparison.

When iOS14 updated I was forced to create a new FaceId photo. Since that hardware was broken, it won’t work.

My complaint is the software require a new FaceId photo. If it didn’t my phone would still work. Turn that “feature off” and most of us get our phone back working.

Instead I’ve got a 12 being shipped to me.

I had the same problem with my XS Max on iOS 14.0.1. I finally realized that my case was the problem. I took my iPhone out of the case and set up Face ID from scratch. Setup went without a hitch. I then put the phone back in the case and all is well. Somehow the case was interfering with the Face ID setup. But I’ve been using the same case for some time. The problems started only after upgrading to iOS 14.

I am not sure what iOS version Face ID stopped working, but I can confirm the following observations on my iPhone X (model MQAF2AA/A / A1901) which has had no hardware repairs:

  • Face ID stops working.
  • The front facing camera in portrait mode doesn't blur the background in Natural Light.
  • The front facing camera in portrait mode doesn't switch to black 'n white in Mono Stage Light.
  • The screen does not blank during phone calls when the proximity sensor is covered. The proximity sensor sensor does not emit IR light.
  • The dot projector does not emit IR light during Face ID unlocks.

After a reboot:

  • Face ID works.
  • The screen blanks correctly during calls when the proximity sensor is covered.
  • Both the proximity sensor and the dot projector emit IR light during Face ID unlocks.

This leads me to believe this is not a hardware issue. Perhaps it is a software/firmware compatibility issue with a particular hardware component that perhaps is faulty.

I would suggest this is an issue Apple needs to resolve for customers both in and out of warranty.

Here’s an update. I have contacted the online support and the support person did a diagnostic test on my phone and informed there is no hardware failure detected(though the dot projection test fails in my phone). So it looks like a software issue to me. I have also asked to report this as an issue to their dev Team, hoping they will put some fix in the next release.

He instructed to restart the phone in recovery mode and connect to a PC and update the os again. I have tried that later, but still did not solve the issue. :(

There doesn't seem to be a concrete fix.

For some people a restart seems to fix it for others no.

I feel that most cases they are just gonna put it down to a hardware issue rather than actually having someone check the software to see what bug caused it (that's assuming they don't already know there's a issue with bricking FaceID and don't want to own up to it).

It seems the best way to get their attention now is by logging it with their support system, either in store, phone or online chat and I have also tweeted their Twitter support account with a link to this discussion hoping someone picks it up and sees that it's too much of a coincidence.

My recent conversation with support:

From you are describing the light sensors settings sound to be off on the device. I can understand what it may sound like a projector issue but your Face ID and your Front camera are two different units on two different parts of your device the Dot Projection you speak of only affects Face ID and is what allows it to scan the face. When that hardware fails that is your Face ID failure and that is the first thing I was checking for in the diagnostic. There is no failures on the Face ID. We do have some interference though.”

so I have an appointment in store :/

‘But if that's the case and its stored and managed by hardware and it doesn't work, then it is a hardware problem, no’ —— not neccessarily hardware..it might be the software that will trigger the hardware to identify our faces..

How we will know? I guess its because all our phone is working fone UNTIL the update...if I correctly remember one of us had one week old iphone then the update came in and all of a sudden he/she got the same issue like what we are having right now..

Im in an IT world (a programmer, not to brag but to support my point) in our office an ordinary webcam can turn into a face recognition using a software...this is where I am coming from and the reason I am blaming the update...my phone is working perfectly fine until the update and it sucks...
