Face Id not working after iOS 14 update -iPhone X

Hi, my iphone X is suddenly not recognizing my face after the iOS 14 update yesterday. I thought a face id reset will solve the issue, but it is still not working. When trying to set the face id, it is showing the error of ‘move the iphone a little higher/trlower’. Nothing works after multiple attempts. Is this an iOS14 issue?

SOLVED: Hi everyone! I had my appointment with Apple Genius Bar today. This is a faulty hardware issue. This is not related to iOS 14 nor will it be fixed with a new update. Sorry to say you'll have to pay $650 to replace your phone. Luckily I was still under my 1-Year limited warranty. The employee told me there is a chip in the hardware that has failed. Thankfully I walked out with a new phone at no cost. But I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it gives you some answer to this issue.

Same for me. Faceid didn't work straight after the update, rebooting fixed the problem for a few minutes – after some reset attempts (including a DFU-restore) face-id doesn't let me set up anything. Apple support tells me it's a hardware error, which it isn't – I can clearly see the flood illuminator and the dot projector working through another camera and I downloaded a 3d scanner app which scans just fine – so it is clearly a face-id problem.

I’m also facing this issue. I used FaceID to get into my phone to do the iOS14 update and when it had finished FaceID no longer worked. I originally thought it might be a bug cause I had updated to the iOS14 Beta so I thought maybe Apple was still working through the kinks in their system. However, even on the official iOS14 it’s still broken. I went into Apple the other day and they told me that the FaceID sensor HARDWARE was broken and that since I was out of warranty (I have an XS Max) they couldn’t make any exceptions and I would have to buy a new phone..... really??? All I did was update your software! I’m going to try and reach out to them again so wish my luck!

To summarize though, the issue I’m having is my front camera works, but when setting up FaceID it can’t register my face all the way so it says “Move iPhone a little higher/lower” forever. I’ve tried restarting, resetting FaceID data, factory resetting my phone, nothing works. If you’re having this issue then Apple may have broken your actual hardware and now won’t fix it.

Just got out of a chat with Apple Support. After doing their diagnostics, they claim that nothing is wrong as far as they can tell, they've never heard of any iOS 14.0 issues with Face ID, and maybe it means the true depth camera is broken.

Which leads me to believe: maybe we all shouldn't have simultaneously broken our true depth cameras while we were waiting for iOS 14.0 to finish updating. Shame on us. Shame on all of us.

I did get a kind invitation to go to the Apple store and have someone look at it, so I've got that going for me.

My Face ID stopped working out of nowhere last week. Is there a way to know when my phone was last updated? I don’t know if it correlates with an update but it keeps telling me to move my phone lower and higher and then says Face ID is unavailable and to try again later. I took my phone to an Apple technician and diagnostics said there is something wrong with the sensor, but that it isn’t a known problem and I have to pay for it to be repaired. I spoke to an Apple representative after that and even after stating that there are multiple threads of people having the same issue, she said Apple says it’s not a known issue. My phone is out of warranty by 6 months and they said it would cost $200 to fix. I haven’t even finished paying it off. I’m so disappointed with Apple and them not standing by their products.

I have the same problem here with my Iphone X, Face ID not working after update to OS 14.4, I visited Apple store for diagnostic and they said there is the hardware issue and can't repair, offer me to buy the new phone with discount price for $549. My phone just a little over year old and not in warranty, I declined the offer and feel bad with Apple products. I been using Apple for awhile and now it time to change. Very disappointed.

I've been struggling with this irritating "Security" feature for months on end. While trying to discern what causes the break in face-id, I've been wondering if somehow either my constant case-swapping or the fact that some of my cases have embedded magnets. I tried leaving my iPhone X naked for awhile, or for as long as I can stand it, but when I encased my phone, the face-id would be lost. I then tried creating a new face-id and then when it stopped working, adding an alternative face-id. That seemed to work until I swapped cases again. I am now at the point where I'm going back to using one case for as long as I can and see how it goes. Hopefully, someone can resolve this bug, which does indeed exist.
